Apple is obviously not interested in any back catalogs since they’ve passed up all these acquisitions. I don’t know what the long game is for tv+ because it’s not really selling hardware since it’s available on everything. I don’t watch much tv in general myself, always working or playing music… I’d rather read a book anyway.
Yeah they’ll never be worthy of actually paying for with their literally just a handful of shows. I couldn’t care less about Oprah let alone her commiserating with celebrities about how hard their gazillion dollar lives are.

if Apple can acquire WWE, TV+ should be able to compete with Disney+, and with content like G4TV shows, TV+ can be #1

While James Bond is still a big name, I‘m not sure it will be the same going forward. I’m a Bond fan and I think the latest incarnation of Bond on screen has been pretty mediocre.
Skyfall was great, the plot, acting, scenes, bond being a desperate underdog, surprises and ending was epic!
the one after SPECTRE? suffered from poor continuity writing.

Just imagining a 6 year old Bezos, watching a Bond movie for the first time; than openly declaring revenge on bond at the credit roll. Finally, Bezos can sleep easy!!!

I find Apple's TV strategy quite baffling. I know they're doubling down on original content, but, frankly, companies need a back catalog AND new content to be competitive in the streaming space. They're already years behind Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max.

it also does not help that their release schedule is not transparent at all. They just randomly drop something and you are supposed to know about it

Oh good, maybe they'll finally release the last Bond film!

I've been thoroughly enjoying 'For All Mankind' on Apple TV, well written and acted I think. I like the streaming services as you can subscribe and unsubscribe at will, so you can watch your program then if nothing else interests you cancel.

Spending 9b to make or acquire new content is money better spent. Apple can make close to 200 new movies/docs etc at 50m a pop for each as opposed to basically MGM “old stuff” that unfortunately younger and younger generations could care less and less about
That's a very good point. However, you're assuming that only young generation are on Apple TV+.

Ted as in “Ted Lasso” the Lead Character on one of their shows, and Mac: or Ronald McDonald, a character Rob McElhenney played in It’s always sunny, who plays the Lead in their series Mythic Quest.

So in full detail Ted = Ted Lasso, Mac = Ronald McDonald

AKA they have Ted and Mac

Competition isn't just about the subscriber count/revenue/amount of content but also the quality of the content and how much of said content is bringing back awards.

Would have been a worthy addition to Apple TV+. Oh well

Not really.
There is a massive tension between a company like Apple and a company like MGM.
- Apple is all about limiting value to the users of Apple hardware.
- MGM is all about maximizing distribution to anyone who can pay dollars to see their content

Should the agenda of the MGM manager within Apple be to push Apple exclusives (and limit new movies, very expensive to produce) to trying to amortize their cost over the limited Apple user base? Or should the agenda be trying to strike up deals to make money from Tivo, Roku, Netflix, Google, and anywhere else the movie can be sold?

Apple seem (for now) to be content to have TV+ be populated with "Apple Exclusives" and (I assume) to have TV+ on various other pieces of hardware more to satisfy their existing customers than to pick up new customers. But honestly I don't get the TV+ strategy and I suspect at some point it will collapse under this contradiction -- there will be a falling out between the manager of TV+ (with the agenda of getting it everywhere) and the rest of Apple (with the agenda of "how does this help Apple as a whole?")

For Amazon this acquisition makes a lot more sense because Amazon is in the same business as MGM -- it's all about wide distribution to everyone, not narrow specialization to just the Amazon select. Amazon doesn't care if you run Prime on your iPad, LG TV, or Samsung Phone. And ultimately, hell, it doesn't even much care if you watch James Bond on Prime or on Netflix, as long as Netflix pays them a few dollars for James Bond.

But it's not really about existing content. This deal will significantly boost Amazon's content creation ability, both in scope and scale, but also most importantly through experience. They'll be aquiring a lot of top tier talent through this as well as rights to some of the biggest films and franchises.

Apple could make a few hundred features for 9 billion easy, and I'm sure the quality will be top-notch if some of their existing stuff is anything to go by. But they'll still be a small and inexperienced fish in a very big pond.

I think this was truly a missed opportunity for Apple. Without a lot more content AppleTV+ will never take off. James Bond franchise alone would have been worth acquiring. I am still on the fence whether to sign up again and if it wasn't for Foundation coming I wouldn't even consider it. Prime I will for sure keep now although it already gave me strong reasons to keep! $10 per month i get 2 days shipping plus tons of movies and tv shows.

Stevie wonder can tell you the worse investment by Apple is Apple TV because there isn’t anything worth a glance. It’s an insult to even say Apple TV is a competitor. My free subscription remains free until July and I don’t even bother except for canceling it. Absolutely trash!

The problem if u want to admit it is that Apple is true to its own culture. A culture of arrogance and a company that doesn’t care what you want. Case in point look at the crapola of stuff they bring out (bad keyboards, touchbars, etc). They are so full of themselves they live in this huge financial bubble thinking they it last forever. They are so out of touch even their own executives eat up their own nonsense.
