Just bought one. I've been waiting far too long for a low cost, high performance device that would readily allow me to stream MKV's across my local network. I really wanted it to be the next apple TV but I can't wait any longer, sorry apple.

Precisely!! This is why the iPod, iPhone and iPad were remarkable successes as apple was first to market for each of the MP3 player, touch screen smart phone and tablet products!

I can't tell if you guys are joking but Apple wasn't the first in any of those categories.

Nice specs and competition is always good for us customers. Really looking fwd to the next iteration of the Atv.

Hmm...seriously considering replacing a silver ATV running XBMC with this. Plex already available for it too.

Designer

I can tell you that the "Fire TV" team could not look or see past Apple TV. The enitire concept was based off Apple TV and there was no vision to see or do anything otherwise. The original design had integrated AC but since the ID was approved by Jeff without blessing by EE, the efficiency hit of AC/DC conversion could not tolerated in this form factor and that was with a dual core procesor, nevermind the existing quad core.

The quad cores can't even operate to their full potential without thermally breaking the design... it is being used by marketing as a selling point/differentiator. ;)

Apple releases first :apple:TV model in 2007. Second generation comes out in 2010, third generation in 2012.

Amazon releases set-top box in 2014 and "Apple got beat to the punch."

Apple have been treating the ATV as a "hobby project" for too long. The 1st generation was over priced and never took off. The current generation is no different to the 2nd generation launched in 2010. The product has not kept pace with the demands of consumers.

Based on how Apple approach their product lineup, I don't expect the next generation ATV will be any better than what Amazon just launched. And in that sense, yes they were beaten to the punch.

Lol Second that

Day by day I keep forgetting this is an Apple Enthusiast forum because most of what I see are people showing so much hatred towards Apple and praise for their competition, especially when the competition hasn't really done much in the past to earn so much adulation from the people here. Apple's competition does one or two decent things and all of a sudden the usual Apple sucks one liners roll out while calling other people sheep for liking what Apple offers. My mistake, I guess people aren't allowed to like and purchase Apple products nor are they allowed to celebrate Apple on an a dedicated Apple enthusiasts board without being labeled an iSheep.

And bringin up the rear on timliness, power, features... again, we haaaave... :apple:

So like the iPhone, iPad,macbook. Macpro .. All class leaders... What's your point?

Because a reasonable percentage is now paid hate posters from various companies... But genuinely I don't think Amazon are involved in that.

Why don't any of these devices stream live TV yet?

In Asia, there are a couple of Android units that do - it's nice to be able to vegetate and watch live network TV from time to time.

Yeah, Amazon totally made a whole product, built an appstore, made partnerships with many game and app developers, and a whooooole demonstration of a product that cannot work and was totally ripped off, based on a rumor of what could be.

Really, people sometimes. I suppose the joke is on everybody who made app and games for it without even looking at the device to see it was a joke!

Yup, the interface looks nice. Also, one thing Aple should do is change the TV Shows experience and make it look a little more like XBMC/Plex. No more navigating long lists of episodes, please.

If I was buying a new HTPC today I'd buy this one. Simple as that. It's open it runs plex, the voice search looks like a great solution to a common problem with these devices and the price is great.

Good job Amazon.

Believe me, there are still a lot of Apple fans here......
I am one of them.
Sometimes, I'm just too lazy to post though :D

Amazon's non-profit motive and broad content library is probably the most important force here. Even if Apple releases a far superior ios tv device, the slobs who just want to watch tv will probably opt for this thing.

Main things I want in a streaming device:

  • iTunes Streaming (local libraries, podcast app, iTunes U app, music, etc.)
  • HBO Go
  • Showtime Anytime
  • Plex
  • YouTube (with a solid interface)
  • Watch ESPN

No single device currently does all of these things. Hopefully Apple brings in those missing features soon.

Plex is a big one for me, something Apple TV doesn't do. We're looking for a set-top box for the bedroom, but it would have to run Plex (as well as Netflix, etc). I don't like Roku enough, Apple TV doesn't do it. Amazon Fire does, but it's not available in Canada. Plus, we don't get unlimited movies, etc with Amazon Prime, so they have some work to do before releasing it here.

If Apple TV updates their model with all the stuff Amazon Fire does, it might finally be a reason to get it. Because up until now, there hasn't been.

Plex is not something the average Apple user is going to use.

It's something this user demands before buying an Apple TV.

Well yes they were in any actual numbers. Tablets were non existent.or the aborted windows tablets with thumb control - resistive or the very cool tiny OQO with 1 hour battery and the HTC win 6.5 phones were resistive stylus phones and the best mp3s were creative 1 gb devices with a 1 Line screen and horrible sound - I own them all. All are not very good.

bottom line its who ever brings it first! and AMAZON JUST DID IT!!!

Not really. The Apple TV and various other TV boxes have been out on the market for years now. Amazon basically sat around and watched the market, listened to all the rumors and then delivered on them a few years later.

Apple should have definitely done something like this years ago, but they will now, I guarantee it. Hopefully the Amazon box can compete in an already crowded market so they can continue to drive competition.

The reason of not seeing a new Apple TV OS/Hardware is not because Apple treats Apple TV likes hobbies or other reasons analyst pull from their lower half body. (And nope, I don't think Tim Cook is tanking Apple to buy back tons of share. But that is a great idea. )
The reason is: Amazon is selling their device while losing money, Apple got their money from device AND content/service.
If Hulu, YouTube and DVR have proven anything, is customers want to watch their contents whenever they want. If it's a live event, they want to join whenever they want.
To do show in an Internet structure, you need these things:
1. A giant set of data centers that all hooks to tier-1 network: Done
You want video be 1080P, even 4K, then data output will be large. Getting 3rd party distribute them for you will be expensive. So Apple is building CDN with Comcast.
2. A reliable transmission for the video: Done
iOS 1 has come with HTTP streaming, and they're testing multi path with Siri.
3. A high speed Internet in your home: Possibly done
You do need a low latency high speed broadband to get high resolution. Since they don't like Google, they can't just paid Google to give you fiber at home. So they talk to your cable provider about it.
4. Get contents: Just started
There's no 'apps' on Apple TV now, those are channels. And that's what Apple want to do: get all the network on board, snap the whole thing in the TV part, and let you subscribe to show like podcast with ads.
They got started with those who are close to them, so you got ABC, Bloomberg and others. But here's the problems: while broadcast television is dying, they don't want to change. They don't know if change to subscribe based would let them be happy, but the bundle sales is still working.
So they want more money from Apple, most likely a 90/10 cut.
But consider how much Apple spent on ICT infrastructure, and 80/20 being their tradition, they don't have a deal. And giving Comcast also control NBC, and News Corp has bad experience of partnering with Apple (Anyone remember The Daily? ). Apple only got half of the four major network, and the other half need you to pay for the whole season, and watch them after midnight. Release their plan now will just make the rest of companies charge more, and no one will buy it. (If you are happy this situation, you have already bought an Apple TV. )

Amazon doesn't care about the money, so they just buy the copyright and give you for free. (Since their money is from the Prime subscription. )
And that's why you got this: http://www.amazon.com/s?rh=n:2864549011,p_85:2470955011
Snap a new UI and app API to Apple TV is easy, consider they got iOS already. But Apple want to get the lowest cost on contents, lower than Amazon, so they could only ask the content providers remain to agent models.

Making a new version of Apple TV is as simple as ABC, isn't it?
P.S. Apple got backup plans: ask you to hook the Apple TV to your antenna cable
But when get a cable to charge is already hard enough for many people, what could you expect from something hook with a cable you only seen every serval years.

Theres a reason why Apple has remained quiet in recent times concerning this space...

It's because they're preparing to strike.

Or Apple have nothing to deliver now and they keep quiet because of a lack of things to talk about.

In the end no one knows if Apple's silence is building suspense to a new announcement or a lack of things to talk about. The fans love to guess what this silence means and fan sites like this one are built upon trying to interpret this silence.
