AMD Based Apple Laptop?

This is off topic, but I was down in San Diego a while ago and saw some iMacs in a hotel lobby with a screen that let you choose between Windows and osX. I have seen boot camp so I know you see 2 different disks when you boot, but these were a windows icon and an osX icon you could click on.

Has anyone else seen this?

I will never buy an AMD computer again, especially in a laptop. AMDs are very hot processors and they require big fans(I learn that from my bro's Compaq), which make them thick and heavy.

It would be best for me if we could of kept PowerPC, developed a lower powerconsuming but stil powerful G5, or Xenon(chip in XBOX 360). But intel is still got...PPC for LIFE

I'd have to disagree with that.

AMD is more than capable of meeting Apple demand, by the way, considering that if Apple were to include an AMD option, that option would likely only represent a portion of an already small market share.. and more than likely in a low end 'budget' machine.

Apple has a low OS marketshare, but in terms of harware, they are one of the world's biggest manufacturers. AMD could not supply enough chips for a Mini Mac Mini type machine.

Perhaps we can choose between AMD and Intel? more options on the table.

That would mean we'd have to pay more for intel machines. intel is giving apple big discounts for not using AMD at all.

Apple just switched to Intel. Why would they go to AMD already?

because their users want the best. intel is great at the moment, but won't always be.

As far as I can remember...

Apple already uses AMD, I think it was for a controller chip in the AE extreme base station. This was mentioned previously when the jump to Intel was announced.
I'm with you guys who believe it's all to do with iTV and also for next version "Ultra" Airport Extreme 802.11n!

If you recall, at the 1-06 unveiling of the intel Macs (or maybe it was the conference call Q&A), Steve stated AMD made really good server chips, but Apple makes consumer products.

Perhaps Apple is doing an AMD based blade, or iTV, or some "appliance" product.

The rumour is unlikely to be true however.

The only thing I can seriously see Apple buying from AMD is the new portable ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 Graphics card for the MacBook range.

AMD portable CPUs are complete rubbish, the Turion 64 the Turion AM2x and the mobile Sempron range are completely inferrior to any mobile Intel CPU.

If Apple does release an AMD laptop I will NEVER buy it.

I agree DigiTimes is very inaccurate with Apple rumors, but probably not the same for other companies-eg. Sony or Samsung.

A better statement would be your average user doesn't care about chip brand as long as the computer is relatively fast, and you get good battery life.

It's quite simple. AMD bought ATI. If Apple wants to use ATI GPUs in their computer, then I guess they have to talk to AMD now (at least for pricing, orders, etc).

Nah...

They may have some AMD's in a lab in some basement "just in case", but I would be totally blown away if they came out w/anything at this time.

If I remember correctly (and if not Im sure someone will correct me) the big incentive to go to intel, besides cooler chips, was intel money. Intel sharing costs of marketing that goes along with exclusive contracts and the "Intel inside" campaign (thankfully no stickers on macs).

The other reason is just marketshare. Apple's limited number of models works with its marketshare size. Increasing the number of board design would probably incur higher costs at this time, at least from having to provide support for 2 different designs. I doubt Apple wants a MacBook Intel and MacBook AMD at this time. It might at a future date with more marketshare.

Another possibility against an AMD Mac is the confusion that might occur in marketing. The message right now is clear: pwerful dual core intel chips and elegant people friendly designed apple software. Why throw, oh also AMD into the mix?
