Should have been a GTX 1050 or better in the new MacBook Pro.

Never going to happen. Apple loves OpenCL up the ass and only AMD works on that. Nvidia does their own stuff.

Amd is good anyway, but yeah nvidia would be better in performance for... gaming... something macs don't do, so lets use the computer units for something like apple pro apps.

I know everyone here is whining about how horrible the graphics chipset is, but can someone please answer a few practical questions for those who are contemplating a purchase....

Does it make sense to upgrade to the 460 if you are not a gamer? Would programs like photoshop or premiere run any better?

Does the 460 allow you to run higher res displays at a higher refresh rate or does the increased graphic memory not matter?

Thanks in advance.

According the notebookcheck...

The 450/455 should be about equal to a GTX950
The 460 should be equal to about a GTX965/1050

Unreal they didn't use the 470.

I'm super disappointed in Apple. I'm on a 2010 15" MBP and I placed the order for it earlier today and after much thinking, I just can't do it. The value for price is just too outrageous. I've been waiting for this forever and I'm so disappointed. I'm gonna go the route of building my first ever PC and it's going to be so much more powerful and cheaper. As soon as I can cancel my order, I'm going to do it.

What OS will your built PC use?

Yeah...

Didn't you pick Mac for the OS?

Great. You're one of the ones who chooses to buy someone else's technology. Your dollars will contribute to another company's profits, thereby enforcing their competition, and further driving forward the progress of technology.
Just realize - it's all the same, and whining about one company's decisions is silly, myopic, and self defeating.
Congratulations on your ignorant, self-absorbed indignation and decision to back another company's profit mongering with your hard-earned dollars.
You do realize that NONE of these advancements actually qualify as basic-human-needs, right? That a HUGE percentage of the world can't even fathom such luxuries, because they're just hoping for a bag of rice and a trickle of disease-free-water from the communal well? None of them give a crap about whether you can get a 450 or 460 or 480 for your dollar, or whether or not someone else is offering a better chip for a lesser price. Because they don't live in a country where that choice is even made possible by free-market competition. Stop friggin WHINING about how it works in a free-market economy, make your choice, and enjoy without constantly criticizing the process that makes it all possible.
Or - move to Nicaragua and enjoy the progress they have there.
BTW - you spend a LOT of time negatively commenting on a site which promotes products that you clearly see as inferior. What a miserable, lousy way to waste time... why not just head over to the Microsoft forums and sing the praises of the new Surface products that you're clearly more personally satisfied with? Or else, apply for a job at Apple, because you're clearly more capable of running one of the most profitable companies in history better than the current crew. Either way - you really find the most satisfaction trolling around here and bi***ing about how dissatisfied you are? Sorry, bro.
I'm 100% with you Theophil1971. Reminds me of this clip:

You do realize their is no 470, 480, or 490 version yet right?

AMD hasn't created the 14nm versions yet.. literally, these are next gen GPU's AMD JUST released TODAY. They've not even created the 470, 480, or 490 14nm versions.. NO ONE has them..

The one's you're referencing are 75w, 32nm, versions.. these are brand new, today, 35w versions, based on new 14nm process.

I'm excited to get mine.. it big upgrade from my old 750m I've got now.
I do realize that. But the 1050, 1060, 1070, and 1080 do exist.

And the ones I'm referencing are all 14 nm Polaris GPUs, so I have no clue what you're talking about. I'm glad you're excited to upgrade your inferior GPU to a more powerful inferior GPU.

I'm 100% with you Theophil1971. Reminds me of this clip:

Take your money elsewhere if you don't like it. Apple is a premium product for people who are willing to pay for it. If they're making the wrong choices, they will suffer financially in the long run. But they don't owe you anything as a consumer. Get over yourself.
You agree that since there are third-world countries that we shouldn't have nice things? Did you even read his comment?

Remember, this is the Pro series not the RX series. There is no 470, 480, or 490.

But Apple usually put lower end GPUs in the MacBook Pro.
Since they use mobile cards in their iMacs, they have to reserve the higher end chips for the iMacs otherwise you would end up with flagship notebooks that are as or more powerful than their flagship desktop. That's not usually something that they like.

Uh, why not? That makes absolutely no sense - gimping the mobile workstation because they want to sell more desktops?

The RX 460 is 2.2 Teraflops and the 460 Pro in the MBP is 1.8 Teraflops, so they're not quite the same. Regardless, the 460 is a very cheap and under-powered GPU. The RX 460 goes for around 120 bucks. It's not meant to be powerful in any way, shape, or form.

Yea, no argument here. If anything, it should have been 450, 460, and maybe a BTO 470.

The jump from 450 to 455 is just to give an illusion you're getting more. It will not offer any more performance.

Just out of curiosity, what does 16GB of ram in 2016 mean?
It means speeder performance due to less data shuffling from the hard drive to the virtual memory and/or RAM. You can still get things done with 16GB but it will get done a lot faster with 64GB.

I have zero qualms with AMD. The problem is what they chose to put in the laptops. I'd be happy if they only stuck with AMD if they put their actually powerful dGPUs in their laptops. They don't even put them in the iMac.

"It looks like you're looking for a mobile rig" ... no it looks like i'm waiting for Apple to not put a crap GPU in their high end laptops. I like that every time someone brings up the crap GPU ... that if anyone wishes it were better, they are looking for a gaming laptop. GPUs are used for far more things than gaming so I really wish that comment would die a horrible death. You clearly don't know what I want. What I want is for Apple to stop handicapping their laptops and crapping all over their customers.

And that 8 pound laptop was just an example for price to power ratio. The smaller Razer Blades are roughly the same size and have far more powerful GPUs in them, so that argument is empty.

Beating the dead horse far too long...
Everyone should have expected this.

I’m a big Apple fan, but their insistence on gouging their loyal customers is disturbing. They are including budget GPU’s in premium laptops selling at super-premium prices.

I feel robbed as well having just paid for one this morning, but I took a look at the Surface Pro and new Surface Book i7 and realized that Microsoft is doing the same. No quad core option across their whole mobile lineup and a 960M at the top end. I haven't found a solid-enough notebook in terms of build quality and size that has the latest quad core i7 and at least a 1060 - I feel like whatever I'd get as a replacement would have to seriously impress.

That poor horse. :(

Wow Apple. Another garbage AMD card.

A $2000+ laptop really should have at least a moderate performance video card. This is garbage.

A 1060 would have been so, sooo much better. I can't believe Apple is still using AMD.

I wanted to buy this laptop SO BADLY! I am truly disappointed. I don't expect Apple to cater to gamers, I'm not a gamer myself, but media professionals and software developers really do benefit from good graphics cards...something this definitely isn't.

One the other hand you thought Apple should put non existent Kaby Lake processors in MacBooks so you're not exactly the go to guy on this

A Skylake processor...? Seriously Apple?

I could understand an iMac with skylake. But MacBooks? Give me a break Apple, you really should use the newer Kaby Lake processors that offer some real power efficiency advantages...unless you want to be out of date literally on the first day.

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. Additional ram is just that, additional ram. Faster ram will certainly help, but having MORE ram will do you zero good, unless you have a need for it. The average consumer uses less than 6GB of ram even during intense usage on a MacBook pro. This isn't windows, Mac OS can actually manage it's ram usage quite well.

Yeah...

Dude, Apple failed me.

This was such a hard decision because of the fact that I prefer macOS, but I can't support what I see as gouging. If I could easily install macOS on a custom built machine, holy crap would that be heaven. Wouldn't you love that? The most powerful components running with macOS.

I would begrudgingly be spending $3000 on a computer that doesn't even excite me. I don't doubt that I would enjoy using the new MBP, but the asking price is too much compared to what you get in terms of power, which I need and want. Like yeah, I do want to play games on my machine aside from the development and creative work I do.

Apple is the one that's forced me to leave macOS and it sucks so much.

He read it. Clearly you didn't understand it. "Since there are third-world countries... we shouldn't have nice things"... really? That was the point?
Wow.

The point was that you have a choice. You can live in a first-world country like ours, where free-markets drive progress. Or you can live in a third-world country where progress is limited by an economic philosophy that discourages free-market profitability. If you choose the former, then accept the realities that companies will often charge premiums, plan obsolescence, and innovate for the long term in order to maximize the profits that drive their progress. If you choose the later, then accept the realities that governments will often answer the cries of the masses by consolidating resources and means of production, at best limiting privatized profits and discouraging progress, and at worst fomenting poverty by greedily consolidating wealth at the top.
The process you're criticizing (whereby some companies maximize their profits by strategically balancing cost and benefit ratios) is the very engine that drives the very innovations that you demand (for a price that would limit their production). The only other option is a model that discourages the innovation altogether... which historically has never, ever worked well.

You don't buy a MacBook for " raw power " you buy it for finesse. you do have the latest and greatest technology. It's an ultrabook with a dedicated GPU, 16GB of ram, and the latest generation Quad-core I7.. what more do you want from an ultrabook?

Presumably now that Apple failed you and you will by an awesome 8lb Razer you will stop hanging around here complaining about it, right?

Meh, I'm sure many people will somehow conclude that they use 16GB of ram during daily usage, but most of them are the ones that just like to argue for the sake to argue. Any actual power user, that actually enjoys using a mac the way it was designed to be used knows we very very rarely get anywhere north of 10GB of ram, and hell, that's a battle just using that much!

Non existent Kaby lake processors...?

Apparently you are less informed than you think. Intel DOES have Kaby lake processors on the market right now and they would have been perfect for the MacBook line. Notice, I said MacBooks, not MacBook Pro's. Got any reading comprehension?

So please, go away with your snide and ignorant remarks.
