I showed Pants on the Ground to a real hip-hop fan and they knew, like me, that it is an instant hit (even before it gets in the studio which it will and probably under Randy and Simon's record people).

You hear the song once and you have the lyrics in your head not unlike "Yellow Submarine" when I heard that memorable song when I was a kid or "We will rock you" when I was a teen. :)

UPDATE, JAN. 18:

Now there are two viral videos related to General Larry Platt's original audition which instantly went viral with over 1.2 million hits the next day, which are Brett Favre and the Vikings singing the song in the locker room after a huge game against the Dallas Cowboys and Jimmy Fallon impersonating Neil Young singing the song. This has all the earmarks of being a William Hung runaway success. Platt is no stranger to fame as he marched with Martin Luther King Jr. and is pictured as doing such when Platt made an appearance and performance of his hit on the TV show, "The View".

yeah i agree Vanessa Wolfe was pretty good...but most of the times the early favourite never wins....i remember last year nobody really heard much about either kris allen and adam lambert until the latter stages.

However, we did know about David Archuleta and David Cook at the beginning.

Very true. Nobody saw them coming. And that is what makes Idol a great TV show. Who though Jennifer Hudson, who didn't become America's Idol, would go on to win an Oscar and a Grammy?

And what really freaks me out is that two top 12 finalists from seasons past would move to a neighboring town where I live in the middle of nowhere where they grow lettuce and spinach. They also sometimes sing in the choir at the same church, and that church went from under 100 people (including visitors) to over 4,000 people in a denomination that does not do "megachurches".

Did anybody catch the guy who split his pants doing the splits?

That looked painful but he's through to the next round. Orlando killed it and did better than Chicago.

I think Chicago needed leekohler to enter for Macrumors. :)

A compilation of "pants on the ground" covers. The best is the Jimmy Fallon as Neil Young pants on the ground version. lol

I have never seen anything that amazing from Fallon. While he's good, he hasn't done impressions as good as Tiny Fey as Palin or Bobby Lee as McCain. But when I saw Fallon do Young (one of my all time favorites), I was stunned.

Not only do I sing the original version of "Pants on the Ground", I also sing the Neil Young/Jimmy Fallon version.

I have thought about going to the open mike, like I have for years, but doing this Young/Fallon cover of the song. I could imagine some would get the joke having watched Idol, The View, TMZ, The Today Show, or any of the news outlets on TV, but there are people where I live (in the middle of nowhere) who would actually take that for a real Neil Young song. What's funny is that the middle of nowhere (the areas south and west of San Jose, CA) is where Neil Young actually lives. :)

It's only the first week, and I already know who I want to win. This girl seems like a really sweet person, and once she gets over her nervousness, should be really great.

I've said before that the only reason I watch this show is that I like to see people come from nowhere and do well. Well, this girl comes from nowhere, that's for sure. I hope she goes far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOmArAKlvhQ&feature=topvideos

too bad your pick was way too nervous. She probably was one of the worst in Hollywood week altogether.

Last night was the worst talent I have ever seen on this show.

I think the producers of AI purposely decided to hide the good singers from us so when it's down to the final 12, we will see some amazing talent.

In early seasons, we would see the Fantasias and Rubens from the start and it seemed fairly obvious there was a front runner long before the final 12 were chosen. When I first saw somebody who eventually went on to win it early in the AI season, I would find myself being bored until they picked the final 12.

Without a doubt, I knew some of the really strong singers, who they used to feature early in the season, would make the top 12. Every time I saw them, not only did they make the top 12, but they made the top 4.

Notice that they showed a lot of mediocre singers getting yellow tickets and focused on people who had to beg to get through. Notice also that people had to vote over Simon and that he liked to put through people who "needed a little more work" or got through to the next round with a small "yes".

I may skip a few weeks of AI and watch something more interesting a come back when they have the final 12. My ears hurt from last night unlike the part of season 1 I saw, and unlike every season after that.

In every single Hollywood season before this, I never saw people so out of tune, out of tempo, and plain irritating, and having the judges let them through to the next round. It used to be if you forgot the words, you were gone. This time, the judges didn't really care if you knew the words or even knew how to harmonize with others. They picked talentless people they knew are going to get sent packing home next week and later.

This is when Simon will actually turn on to his old self and there will certainly be tension between him and the women on the panel. It's pretty much planned and it's no mistake they chose a caring person (but one who could defend themselves with a sharp wit) to sit next to Simon. I think Simon will be extra critical of the final winner as they go through the top 12 one by one just to make his statement in his last season.

well most people know singing probably is 49% of the equation. It has to do more with your style and looks. etc.

sadly, you pretty much know who is going to be in the top 24 already just by looking at the demographics (and who is profiled i.e. that guy who's wife gave birth while he was in hollywood).

young 16- 17 year olds - probably 3
the old geezers (27-28) - probably 2 or so
rockers - 2
blondes - 3
minorities - 8 - 9

etc etc.

the singing just has to be good enough for the judges to not think wow that is bad.

It is a formula to get the biggest draw. Sometimes there is a fascinating talent in there, other times the best of just OK singers wins the show.

Last year, Adam probably had more consistent good singing, and Chris, while OK, didn't do a whole lot with his career since. There are a couple of other winners that kind of fell by the wayside, too (Jordan and Taylor).

Season Winner Runner-Up Third Place
1 Kelly Clarkson Justin Guarini Nikki McKibbin
2 Ruben Studdard Clay Aiken Kimberly Locke
3 Fantasia Barrino Diana DeGarmo Jasmine Trias
4 Carrie Underwood Bo Bice Vonzell Solomon
5 Taylor Hicks Katharine McPhee Elliot Yamin
6 Jordin Sparks Blake Lewis Melinda Doolittle
7 David Cook David Archuleta Syesha Mercado
8 Kris Allen Adam Lambert Danny Gokey

Biggest let down would have to be Fantasisa Barrino and Ruben Studdard followed by Taylor Hicks. Why? No following. For Fantasisa and Ruben, they sat in a weird position. what did they try to sing? pop? r&B? its tough to get in the r&b, hip*hop crowd without some support from leaders in that industry, they were just sort of left in the air to do nothing. And taylor hicks was just way too old to be a pop singer, hes a broadway actor now...a better fit.

you ask me..its time for a young white female winner. last one was carrie underwood, and i would say she was probably the biggest success out of american idol (little more so than hudson).

Danny Gokey and Chris Daughtry are the best the show has seen.

I think Janell Wheeler is hot! And is supposedly Tim Tebow's girlfriend..

I also like the mexican guy with the glasses, and the white girl with half dreads.

I think if the show can find somebody like Carrie Underwood (country and pop/rock), it would be a find for the Idol franchise. Better yet if they could find the next Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, or Lady Gaga.

With this show you never know since some non winners or runner ups did pretty well like Jennifer Hudson.

After about ten years, one can track an artist's career but in different terms. Did they go platinum right away and start with huge fanfare and press (like Ruben, Clay, Adam, and Fantasia), or will they have a longer, more tempered career like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood who can survive through different genres equally well year after year?

My guess is that Clay will have a significant following 20 years from now with middle-aged women as he is the only Idol worshiped as such, and Jennifer Hudson will eventually try and add an Emmy to her Oscar and Grammy awards. Neither one won the show, but many years after Idol if off the air, I think those two will remain established with a long list of accolades. I think to a lesser degree Kelly Clarkson can stay hot as long as she somehow keeps on evolving. Carrie, if all else fails, can be a big selling aritst in country music for the next 20 years.

I really thought Idol was designed to make only short term pop stars, but when I saw Jennifer Hudson get the Oscar, I knew that Idol's stock went way up in the entertainment business.

What Idol needs is to find a male top 12 get an Oscar like Jennifer Hudson did for the girls. It's not impossible since Frank Sinatra was a singer long before he won the Oscar and turned out to be a pretty decent actor.

I was sad to see country girl Vanessa leave right away. I hope she comes back next year, if not to Idol, to X Factor. No one else is standing out this year except Big Mike because of his baby birth drama, not because of his voice, which is decent.

The standouts on vocal are not going to be shown during Hollywood week. We will see them really shine when its down to the top 24 or even top 12. It's creative editing. Idol does not want to show all its talent right away.

They better do it quick. I'm getting bored. It's not creative editing, it's boring editing.

This is by far the most boring season yet as far as a launch. I hope the end result will more than make up for this year's lack of talent. I think some pretty good singers were kicked off and some pretty bad ones let through to live another episode or two.

Remember that crazy dude with the headband? I think Idol kept him as kind of of slightly more than talented version of William Hung because he was such a draw. Pants on the ground is probably in professional video production, under the careful watch and big budget of American Idol as we speak, and they will air it on a top 12 show.

well Howard Stern is making a big fuss now because Ellen said she would leave if howard gets the gig so now Howard said he would be willing to do it. If someone of this controversial did it, american idol could easily get 1 -2 more seasons.

Oh- it'll get one more season, but that's it.
