The guys were not great but they certainly gave off a better debut than the girls.
The girls were far too predictable and the judges were harsh on them for that, so the guys had the advantage of trying to be original and daring which they were.
A couple of the guys didn't pull it off, but nobody tried to be "safe" so they were singing to win. One guy was way out of tune but Simon still liked him.
As to who will get kicked off tomorrow from the guys, I don't know, but for the girls, there are at least ten of them I could see as potential losers, maybe eleven of them.
If the girl with the harmonica makes it onto the top 12, she's the only girl than can make it into the top 6, and I am afraid the girls stand very little chance this season of having a winner.

the guy that was picked to replace the guy who had to drop out due to having a contract will be gone tonight. no question about it. most people generally agree with the judges and dont allow has-beens to run that much longer than they really should.
I think John Chu or whatever his name is wont make that far...just not that interesting.
Top picks for guys is: the guy with the long hair, the guy with the mullet and the ortiz kid (went number 12 last night).
for the girls: they are were like the same to me.
John Chu had little or no soul, but he has a big voice. The stand in #12 guy had a case of nerves and he didn't project enough, but he can sing in tune. That is a lot more than what most of the girls can do, who don't project, who don't sing in tune, or have any sort of x-factor. The girls this season are like the Stepford girls.
To be fair, the four people who go home tonight should be four girls. That's how truly pathetic they were for the most part.
AND: The first girl to go home was one who really couldn't sing among a whole bunch of bad singers. She was the real only "model" looks type of girl in the group of 12 girls, but this isn't a photo shoot. And the other girl, well, she almost sounded like a radio far away. No presence, no volume. And yes, she was one of the prettier ones, too.
I agree. The girls did quite a bit better than last time. Let's see who will stay for the next round....
I disagree- Andrew needs to step it up big time. He's not been doing anything memorable at all, while Casey did well last week and Lee Dewyze has been solid both weeks. Andrew is turning out to be the Danny Gokey of this season- good enough, but nothing special.
The girls just plain, well- stink. Crystal is the only one who will do anything out the whole bunch. And she is amazing.
On the guys side the only half decent ones are Lee and Andrew...on the girls side Crystal and Siobhan...Katie Stevens is good but too young and doesn't have an 'identity' yet...

If you remember, Danny Gokey made it into the top 12 and top 3 or 4 so he wasn't what you would call bad. Only Andrew among the guys is safe for top 12 in my mind, and the rest are in serious jeopardy of not making the top 12. Anyone of the other 9 guys can easily get voted off. Casey is a great guitarist (and may have a future as a professional studio guitarist), but he is mostly eye candy for teenage girls like Sanjaya or should I dare say, the Jonas Brothers. He can't really sing and this is a singing competition like Simon pointed out when he trashed Casey. And Casey is the other guy who looks like he went to rock star school like that '70s guy who seemed a bit Morrison, a bit Jagger, and a bit Iggy Pop (good theatrics but no originality and no real voice). Lee is amazing when he can sing in tune, but when he sings out of tune, he is the worst I have seen get this far on Idol. I hope Lee makes it to the top 12. He will be like the one former Grunge guy (or Idol approved rocker) who will fall in Disco or Country week, unless he's a grunger/rocker who can be versatile beyond the Seattle grunge sound like Daughtry.
Yes, the girls suck except for Crystal, and maybe that white haired girl who could be the dark horse for the girls. The girls were so bad and knew it that even crowd favorite Crystal thought she was going to get voted off. While she's good, she may only make top 6.

Oh- I agree. But remember, Danny didn't win the competition. He was good but he wasn't good enough. Andrew should be knocking our socks off, but I don't think he gets it. The lights are on, but nobody's home. I think Casey and Lee will pull it together. Lee's problems are nerves right now. Once that's gone, he's gonna mop the stage with all of them. It may very well be the Lee and Crystal show at the end, but it's probably going to end up being the guys again this year. The girls just don't have it.
I am secretly rooting for Crystal, probably because I am a huge Indigo Girls fan and a huge Melissa Etheridge fan and Crystal somewhat reminds me of them, but less talented of course. But if Crystal was as talented as those stars, she would probably be signed by now.
If Lee gets past his nerves and focuses on staying on key, he has a chance, maybe. Maybe Lee can step it up and win like Kris.
Casey is simply a blond haired version of David Cassidy from the Partridge Family, but with a lot less vocal talent. My thoughts about Casey are what Cara said when his guitar playing outstripped his singing which made Casey botch the third and four verses, that Casey just took two steps back. Casey showed some potential when he sang a low key, but heartfelt rendition of Bryan Adams.
Correct, but if Casey learns from that, he's also gonna be a force to be reckoned with. Lee will be just fine. He connects with the audience. The nerves will pass.
And I am right there with you about Crystal. I hope she's around a long time.
since i am a guy and watch american idol from time to time, i judge the girls according to how hot they are. All the guy contestants are horrible (of course I would say that)
i really like that girl that blows glass. She is interesting to look at but I can see myself getting tired talking to her after a while. (she talks way too slow). and her teeth freek me out all gapped and everything.
i kinda like that girl with the red hair although the tip of her nose is sort of weird. I think she will be voted off soon though she seems odd.
I dont like the latina from Miami but I can see her going to top 10 just because of her looks.
the two african americans bore me and the one that reminds me of those crazy hyenas from the lion king will make top 10 because of the pre-tweens voting for her and her miley lovefest. I predict she will sing a Justin Beaver song soon.

i dont like the dread locks. i got turned off when she said she is doing it just for the money and thats it.
the albino girl...i dont like her..but she will be in top 10.

Umm...what? This is a singing competition, not a beauty contest (although looks do play somewhat of a role). I would advise you to watch a different show, if you want to look at "hot chicks". There are plenty of shows like that out there.
The fact that you stated all the guys are horrible indicates that you have no idea what you're talking about with regard to singing.

Albinism is simply a congenital disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin. I am convinced she has that unless she uses white makeup. who knows.

Catalog model Casey, and Sanjaya (pre-cursor type to a Jonas Brother) from a previous season are examples of basically talentless singers get a few extra weeks of survival based on looks.
Carmen Rasmussen, the very cute girl from seasons past, got votes based on her looks. Kelly Pickler, hot chick, got a few extra weeks and she could sing, but only one-dimensionally.
I will admit that at least of that group of those lookers, Sanjaya could sing somewhat but was no real threat to win based on singing alone. If he had won though, based on his sizable female following, I would not have been surprised.
If you watched last week, arguably the two prettiest girls, also non singers like the guys (Casey, Sanjaya) I mentioned above, got voted off. They would have fared better on Tyra's America's Next Top Model.
In the end, this should be a singing competition and the looks thing, while very popular with teenage boys and girls who love to text to Idol and are the core audience, should be secondary. But the judges have no say at this point, and if the girls texting Idol love a guy based on looks, then I say Casey will definitely go top 12, and also that other forgettable, shy guy with the mullet who reminds me of a Duran Duran member.
All the adults I know who love the show watch, but they don't text either because they think it's a waste of time, or their idea of high tech is still e-mail, surfing the net, or calling a person who is there in person.
I know the power of text, but I am not hooked on that bandwagon. But when I see young kids at the mall, it's all about the text and they have pretty much replaced laptops at Starbucks when the kids come over there. It's all iPhones and Blackberrys now. If anything good came of iPhone, it's that Steve Jobs once again predicted the next step in high tech pop culture.
thinking back at all prior american idol stars. quite a few are known because of their personality and not singing. kelly pickler rings a bell. does she even sing at places anymore? she just seems to go around with her new implants.
and i heard that since mostly girls watch this show and vote..they tend to not vote for attractive girls because its a defensive type of thing. so instead they vote for girls who they think dont look as good as them.

this whole thing is bad news for the miami girl, who seems to be one of the last model -types.
Looks legitimately play a part in the show. Simon has always mentioned physical appearance in his critiques, especially in the early stages of the competition. The show is American Idol, not American Singer.
I haven't watched this season but now I'm getting interested. Hyena woman, etc.
That said, comparing a women's looks to a hyena isn't a compliment. If you don't agree, go to a nightclub and try it

haha. I will take you up on that offer since in most nightclubs no one can hear what you are saying even if you are yelling right in their ear. add liquor or lollipops to the mix, and they probably have no clue what a hyena is.
Simon is the one who started calling this a singing competition when he completely got sick of good looking contestants who wore out their welcome starting in season 2.
American Idol shows a package with looks being important, but still way behind singing.
This still isn't America's Top Model, which btw is a show I love to watch. If a person is all looks and little or no singing talent, let them go to a top model show (male or female). Or let them be on the Bachelor or Bachelorette.
I think the Idol franchise probably has helped the judges pick out some lookers, just for the ratings, and some real singers. There have been some Top 12 in previous years that made me really wonder. They looked good, but was that all they could find (singing wise) among 100,000 hopefuls?
I don't think anybody has won this show yet based solely on looks, but it could happen this year or in a future American Idol season. I think decent singer Jordan beat out incredible singer Melinda based on looks. I would say Jordan had somewhat of a voice, but Melinda had the pipes that year.

I think when it comes down to a very close contest near the end, looks could help as I think it did with Jordan over Melinda.
On the side of the guys, two singers who are not the best but not close to the worst got kicked off. The mullet guy and the #12 guy asked to come back got lucky for another week. I think the girls like the two lucky guys who remained tonight but who should have probably been kicked off by now.
From this, I think that (as some also said), the key component of voters are teenage girls. But that is the obvious factor in every season. They may not care about the very pretty girls, but they will vote for the guys they think are adorable.
Danny Gokey was pretty good tonight and it shows just how far a singer can come (#5 on iTunes) when they have had time to tour, record, and get professional coaching. Every year when they bring back former Idol contestants, they are so polished and put the current Idol contestants to shame.
