well Howard Stern is making a big fuss now because Ellen said she would leave if howard gets the gig so now Howard said he would be willing to do it. If someone of this controversial did it, american idol could easily get 1 -2 more seasons.

I'd love to see Stern get the gig, who else could be as blunt and cold as Simon. I like Stern's humor, I understand that many don't. Ellen? Meh.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Andrew Garcia. He was excellent, and that version of "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul was awesome. I could see him going all the way.
Here's the performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5V0iKkfuuA

He's the only one that has made an impression for me so far. ;)

That was a little better than the rest, but still without competition, I think he's definitely going to the next step, the top 24. From there, we will see. I would like to see how he fronts a whole band if he gets that far this season.

I think leekohler is correct and American Idol has one season left after this. It had a good run, but all good things must come to an end. Without Simon it will not last.

I think this is very possible.

Die hard fans will say that AI must live on without Simon, but everything has a lifespan, much like a great sports hero that has a good run and then disappears into retirement or infomercials. If Howard Stern comes on, or somebody as "mean" as Simon, then the show could go on for a few more seasons. I just don't see this show getting the same super long run like American Bandstand with Dick Clark (30+ years).

Ten years after its over, few will remember or care about AI. Popular culture will have something new to gravitate towards.

Actually, same could be said for longstanding icons of culture who had a good run like Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show (Jack Paar and Steve Allen before him), The Spice Girls, and probably star quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Brett Favre (who like American Idol has a few seasons left at very most).

I would rather see American Idol discover a few more stars in the next few years and then have some other talent show format show be on Fox.

Scratch that for this year. Not a star in sight. It's a real wash and something tells me the producers want to kill this show knowing Simon won't come back next year. If there were any good performances, the editing of tonight's show hid it.

This season won't be like previous seasons, which was to look for the best, but this time it will be vote for who is the least annoying. It kind of reminds me of some past political races. :)

Tonight, I saw a tiny seed of hope in singer/guitarist Andrew Garcia.

At first, I thought the one for the girls was the country singer (Vanessa?) but she destroyed that Taylor Swift tune, if it's even that she was trying to sing.

Among the girls, the only one with x-factor was the hyper Mary girl who got kicked off. None of the 12 women remaining have x-factor or great voices, so this competition can end up being four guys vying for the top spot this year.

Last year had Kris, Danny, and Adam and it was a year for the guys. This year will be the same, just less talent. I think it's possible Idol saw its last good year last year.

If Idol goes on, this may be the season that will be considered the dog or at best the filler year. So far, no season has been bad, but this one is aiming for the top billing at the Holiday Inn (to borrow a phrase from Simon Cowell).

OK- the girls just plain sucked for the most part tonight. The girl with the harmonica was the best, but that's not saying much if I can't even remember her name. Too bad, I had big hopes for this group of girls. Let's hope the guys bring it tomorrow night.

That's too bad.

I will be tuning in about 20 minutes from now. I hope the band, if there is a full band at this stage, can make the performers come across a little bit better.

There is a full band, but it doesn't much matter. Most of them are off key or just plain boring.

Just went to the website. Crystal Bowersox was the girl with the harmonica. She was decent, but she's been better. Lacey Brown just absolutely blew it, as did Lilly Scott- two that I thought would knock it out tonight.

I think Crystal is the favorite among the girls this season. I didn't like the song choice, but she did the song better than any of the other girls would have done.

The "corporate singer" girl somewhere in the middle or the second half of the show played it safe but if she goes outside the margins, then she can make it happen.

For the rest of the girls, I think their nerves got the best of them. I expect for the girls to have to step it up overall and I will give them another chance. If they don't deliver soon, then the guys will run away with this year's competition.

Lily Scott (the girl with tattoes on her arms, and grey hair, 20yr old) is a good singer and kinda hot!!!!!!!:D she's my age.....!!!!!!!! +1

Yeah....she reminds me of the punk rocker girl

allison iraheta....who finished #4 last season and was also cute!:p

Vanessa has been gone for weeks. But I would much rather she had been there last night instead of half of those girls.

I know she's been gone for weeks but I just found this thread and saw the videos. She is cute, I agree, but I also agree with the judges in not letting her through.

I'd buy that as a single in a second...he's quite good..

-J.-

Me too. :)

i liked that girl with the red hair. she seemed the most mysterious though..probably why I liked her. Her nose is a little weird, but I'll live with it.

of course, the judges ripped her a new one, but seems like they did that for 10 of the 12 or something like that.

meanwhile...i have a hard time believing Ellen knows what she is doing. I get the whole..she is the judge of overall idol appeal and such, but when she does make a random comment about the actual singing..I'm like..how does she know.

Lily has a chance at the top 12 for sure, but rest are not that good.

Lily blew it last night though. She had better step it up, because I do like her too. Crystal was the only one who stayed on key out of all of them.

What was funny was that the last girl, can't think of her name, sang Michael Buble's song out of tune, but was more in tune than the usually tone deaf Buble. But Buble has the swagger and strong stage presence, unlike the #12 girl who looks like one of Simon's Holiday Inn wedding singers. ;)

But come to think of it, Sinatra got pretty toneless and tone deaf towards the end of his career but people still flocked to see him. But at least Frank was able to sing on key at one time unlike Buble who gets too excited with himself and pulls too many notes sharp.

That being said, for good old gritty rock and roll, there are more than a few instances of where someone like Mick Jagger displayed less than stellar vocal skills, but his being flat and winded kind of goes with the Rolling Stones and their vibe. Same goes with Neil Young, who I love with his bizarre voice.
