It's unfortunate how so many pea-brains cant realize how great of an advancement this is. I will use it all the damn time! I've wanted this kind of voice control since the first Star Trek I ever saw. This is truly a game changing technology. Anyone who can't see that is small minded and short sighted. I can't wait for the day this kind of tech is built into every electronic device I own!!

To be honest I think that your opinion is a little short sighted as I dont think this is a long term gain for anyone, just a novelty that people might currently believe to be the next big thing. There are currently better advances in technology than a piece of software that reminds you when to leave the rubbish bin out.

You have coped well enough up to now without this. This will not make you more productive as it simply saves you seconds, if that.

Save your money and put it towards a holiday or something just as short term (but more fun).

RIP Steve

I don't understand how some people can say that this is stupid and that they won't use it after day 1... I can not wait to just speak a text message instead of typing it, or reply to this forum by talking instead of typing...

Android has been doing this for a couple years now.

I was doing it using Dragon Dictation on my iPhone as well.

Yeah no you were not

This is what I'm waiting for: an Android version of it.... Now that's going to be very funny! Or better yet: a Windows Phone 7 version! LMFAO

W7 Mango already introduced this a while ago, pretty simular. It actually looks more user friendely in some are's. Jokes on you, I would think.

Claiming that over and over does not make it true. Makes me believe you have no idea what suri is

Because you can open the app and do it. People around you would appreciate that. Your girlfriend will appreciate that.

People swallow up everything that they are told is great. They get told specific ways on how to use it to improve their way of life. In fact, Siri would only improve the lives of those who have a disability and need this feature. If you're not blind or have full use of your hands, I really dont see why you'd want this feature. People will try and convince themselves that they have a use for it. I would think that their money would be better spent on more important things.

Agree with you on that.

The part I don't get is about replying emails / SMS using dictation.

If you have to dictate anyway, why don't you call and leave a voice message? It is faster and you don't have to worry about Siri not being able to turn voice to text.

Look at this workflow:
Old Way:
Call your friend

New Way:
You dictate voice to text >> voice cmd to send to your mate >> your mate's iphone reads out from text to voice

These days people go to these lengths so that they don't have to talk to each other.

My Toyota has built in navigation, believe it's a Denso product. It is also voice controlled. I hardly ever use the voice controls. It is too easily confused by road noise, AC fan, other people talking in my car. It has a myriad of voice controls, I'm hungry- brings up icons for restaurants etc, but besides the novelty, impress the friends factor It's not all that usable.

I don't know, it doesn't seem like including a Calendar on a handheld is a passing novelty. All this does is let you quickly make simple entries.

But it doesnt replace note taking. Note taking has a need. Voice control has been around for quite some time and hasnt taken off. I liken it to Facetime when it was to reignite video calling. This hasnt happened. People will feel awkward talking commands to their phone. They will most likely use this for some fun down the pub. They wont be using it on the train (fingers crossed).

Lots of people use facetime. That nobody wants to look at you when they talk to you does not change that

This software is the dawn of a new era. In no time we will all be walking around with Bluetooth earbuds so we don't disturbed anyone while were talking to our PA (a real personal assistant that is always with you & can keep you on track). Most of the time you won't even need to touch it if Siri designs it so it can be called by name to activate. ( hello Hal what is the temp...) how long till people start creating personality software (artificial intelligence ) for your PA?
This announcement may literally accelerate the evolution of humanity.

1. How will you be able to specify what sound you want for your alarm?
2. How will it know how long your meeting will be when you set up a meeting?

You tell it? That is the point. You tell it what you want to do and it does it.

Dragon Go does a lot of what Siri does. It's just not integrated with the OS.

I'm not saying it's the same and is as comprehensive. But anyone arguing this is all new and hasn't existed like this is 100 percent wrong.

With Dragon Go! I can purchase an app by speaking. I can make a dinner reservation by speaking. I can check out articles on any given subject on a website that I name by speaking. I can play any song, artist or album by speaking. And so on.

But don't take my word for it - download the free App.

That + VLingo (for dictation to email, txt, twitter, facebook, etc) is a LOT of what Siri will do. Not everything. But a LOT.

This is great for in car use...

But yes, voice control is an acquired skill. Some people swear by Dragon NaturallySpeaking (Desktop voice recognition software), others give up after a day. I'm pretty sure iOS is based on the same Nuance technology.

And I am guessing - since you'll want to proof read emails, txts, etc - you'll still need to look at the screen and then click something to "send" (the dictation part)
In the section of the apple video featuring the blind woman, her reply text is read back to her before she says to send it. This feature would also be useful to people who drive, but can't call or text in their car.

On a side note, does Scott Forestall really need a geofence remnder to call his wife? If so, i would say his marrage is prolly not the healthiest..
I'd say that he's probably got a healthier marriage than most. If he can set a reminder for calling his wife, the anniversary, dinner plans and birthdays, then his wife will probably be a lot happier; you think the marriage would be happier if he forgot things like calling his wife or anniversaries? If you think the latter, then you're obviously not married or lack common sense.

When will Siri be able to contact emergency services for the elderly, or endangered?
Oh no, it's going to be the return of "Help I've fallen and I can't get up!" :D

I wonder if Siri is smart enough to help me avoid drunk dials...

As in,

Me: "Katie is my girlfriend."

Me: "Katie and I broke up."

Me: "Call my ex."

Siri: "I don't think that's such a good idea."

:D

Find Sarah Connor

I'm sure it will be wonderful. Then some fool will ask "Where is Sarah Connor". Everything will go downhill from there.

Yeah, that's what I said on my other post. 15 years ago that sight was weird, not people are texting each other while sitting at the same table, and that's not weird anymore.

I think there is an undeniable difference. Talking to a person on a phone is connecting with someone. Not sad. Talking to your phone for the weather, very sad.

Talking to someone on the phone whilst on the train, annoying to people around you.

Talking to your phone whilst on the train, far more annoying because it really doesn't need to happen.

The day Angry Birds is voice controlled is the day I shoot myself.

The only sad thing is people worried about others judging them when they are talking on their phone.

Being worried about that is abnormal as an adult and you should outgrow it as a teenager so good luck to you.

Yeah you are correct, there is no gain for anyone. Deffinitely not for the blind or the physically disabled.

I'm more concerned about having to deal with people who think its ok to this type of thing on public transport. I have stated several times that this app is no reason to waste your money.

Have a read through my comments. I've acknowledged that the blind have a use for this. I've also said that if you are not blind or have full use of your hands, you DONT need this. If you are not blind, you cant claim to need this. But, you'll waste your money anyway because a big corporation tells you how much better your life will be with this product. Open your eyes.

If you can't figure out why someone send an email instead of a voicemail it is not surprising the comprehension of this tech eludes you

Looks to me like he does know why people favour text/email over voice and he pointed it out in his post.

Does your poor reading skills give you a need for Siri? Perhaps.
