I would state on record that Siri is the most amazing innovation EVER if (and only if) it is always in a state of "on" and when I say "now where the hell did I leave my iphone" it played a game of hot and cold with me.

What I wanna know is can I tell siri to turn on my bluetooth?

Good question. Especially since now it's a built-in Apple program, it could have far more access to internal controls.

(On Android phones, I use the Edwin voice helper app to toggle Bluetooth, WiFi, look up nearby stores, get the weather anywhere, and translate words into other languages. Rumors say Google will be releasing their own voice assistant soon.)

--

Which reminds me of something I noticed while doing a comparison:

When I ask Android Edwin to "wiki Neil Armstrong", I get back the full Wikipedia page.

I noticed on the demo that the iOS Siri app fetched the mobile Wikipedia page instead.

Thought it was interesting that Apple would choose the "mobile" internet in this case.

While I can understand those who don't think this is anything big, I think it's rather important not just for the general population, but for people in businesses who are in their car often (people in sales, supervisors, etc). My gf is in sales and constantly sends emails while driving (using her Android) and sets multiple appts with people. Siri would be very helpful to her based on what they've shown so far.

I'm not in the same boat as her but I can definitely see the appeal on my end of speaking into my phone to find directions and locations, etc (I am in the camp of not wanting to do this in a public locale mainly because it seems very "attention whore-ish" to me, but that's neither here nor there) as well as texting responses to people while driving. Like it or not, the predominant form of conversation happens via text and there are times when someone texts me and I call them and they don't answer because they either don't want, nor are in a position to talk. I've started using the "Hey Tell" ap just because it is easier to use that than text at times.

And for those who say why not just call instead of email, in some instances (especially corporate) you must have a paper trail to justify actions at times do to forgetfulness. I know due to my job, I usually request that co-workers and attorney's send me everything that we talk about (work related of course) in writing so I can't get called out for doing something different down the line. It sounds excessive but we can thank Enron (among others) for that.

So while I can see how this may not be a game changer for some, I do think it is a very solid step in the right direction for technology that can be very important down the line as others in this thread have pointed out.

I wasn't sure about Siri at first but now I really, really, REALLY can't wait to have it on my Mac. On the iPhone it will be neat but on a Mac it will be amazing!

Siri, why are people so upset at Apple for not introducing a product that they never stated they would introduce?

Why do you need either?

I find it sad that people will trash something new without even knowing all the details just because it doesn't immediately fit their every need.

And no, Apple will not be getting my money for the 4S. I find it to be a very robust upgrade it but doesn't offer anything compelling enough to me. I would really like to give Siri a try to see what it can do and find out if there are applications I haven't considered. Even so, that alone is not enough to drive an upgrade cycle for me.

I need both because of obvious reasons to have them. Siri doesnt have that. I'm not saying that people wont evolve into having a need for this, I just hope that we dont. Needs are born out of mass changes in behaviour. These happen because of companies telling us what we want and need. When the majority change to adopt these products, it creates a need for everyone. Television being a good example. Same with mobile phones. Who needs a 100% mortgage? Noone, but they were sold as being the perfect package for those who couldnt scrape together a deposit. In reality, they are one of the most dangerous purchases one can make.

But its sad that people instantly want this new iPhone becasue of Siri and try to justify its uses because a big corporation says its an all powerful tool that will help you in your life.

Stop wasting money. Its why the world is in the state its in. Over consumption on short term luxuries instead of being wiser with their spending.

Again, I'm not having a go at people who are in the market for a new mobile phone as their current one is on its last legs or they can somehow justify buying a phone. Just wasting money on Siri because they think its an advance in technology, you're the idiots of the world.

Seriously, I don't think I have ever seen anyone with less vision or comprehension than you have, particularly on this issue.

it might be NDA, but is there an API for Siri so other apps can take advantage of it? i'd love to make notes in BusyToDo

Dictation will be available anywhere there is keyboard input, so you will be able to do that, by bringing the app up.

I do want to see the API at some point though so you could say from the main screen "busytodo Call the dog groomer" and it would make the note in busytodo, or even allow you to create a shortcut for it or a default for note or whatever.

I suspect that will happen at some point. Just to clarify though, anywhere on the iPhone 4S where there is a keyboard you will be able to use voice input instead. This is not really part of Siri but just part of the dictation, which is part of the whole package.

----------

They would have shown it.

Sure anyone who doesnt agree 100% has no "taste" .

And this is the problem with people like you, do into your own little world you dont seem to know there are others things out there.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Windows-Phone-Mango-voice-control-gets-video-demo_id20626 Its from a couple of months ago probably better out there but it gies you a nice overview of this 'archaic feature " .

Why do people purposefully want to make themselves look ignorant and foolish. That is nowhere close to what Siri is able to do and will do. You would know that if you paid any attention.

If you think that demo is what Siri is your mind is going to explode when you actually see Siri in action. LOL.

Wouldnt that involve it recognizing your voice alone? Otherwise you'd trigger hot and cold with all iPhones in the room.

If you are in a room with other iphones, you would have one of the other siries call your phone. I'm wondering how well siri will work in a group; in the case of the game-playing samcraig it would need to do as you say, or have a unique designation as well as being spatially aware ... definitely not second generation siri (or 5th or 6th? generation voice control)

Edit: the following was not intended for the above poster. Was more thinking of questions or commands to give Siri...
"Siri is Ferk yoo" ...

I am kind of looking forward to the day when I get home from work, put my iPhone on the table and it starts asking my iPad how its day was. :D Preferrably in the voice of Portal's gun turrets.

Question guys, are map-based questions exclusive for US? Because I was looking at the keynote and it says "for US only" in parenthesis.

So i can't say "how to get home" if i'm in Canada or UK?

It will be cool when you can go away on Vacation to another country and speak to it in a Language, and have it speak back a different Language, this will be a cool feature.

Especially that I may be going to another country and I do not speak their language, it would be cool to speak to Siri, and have it convert it to the other language

There's already a google app (translate) that does this.

Imagine how much fun you're going to have during the 2 minutes your friend, leaves his 4s unattended, while going to the bathroom, or something

"text Kim ........ nice tits, but your ass is getting big"
"set alarm ......3am, everyday"
"set reminder every 2 hours, time to beat off"

Imagine if you actually gave it some thought, u could prolly come up with some great ones - :D

I wonder if Siri will work even if my iPhone is connected to the USB port or 30-pin connector in my car?

The one thing that really bothered me about using voice apps while in my car is that when I hook up my iPhone to the USB port in my Acura TSX or my Parrot system in my Toyota RAV4, the microphone would not work at all. The iPod player would take over the phone can even if I multitasked, the microphone on the iPhone would not work at all.

I know Siri can be used with a Bluetooth headset on the go. My TSX and Parrot system does connect with my iPhone to do handsfree calling. So, I suppose Bluetooth is the way to go to talk to Siri while driving?

This would be interesting to find out.

I wonder if just for a test you can place your 4S on the dashboard and ask Siri to start recording video as your camera is pointing forward to record as you drive or for some other use, it will be interesting to see obviously with a handsfree bluetooth

I'd ask it,

"When is the iPhone 5 coming out?"

It just goes to a Web Search :(

Some of the funny things it says:
User: "I love you"
Siri: "User, I'd prefer to keep this relationship professional."
User: "Will you marry me?"
Siri: "Ok, I found these local businesses named marry me"
User: "Is there a God?"
Siri: "I found these churches near your location"
User: "Are you God?"
Siri: "No comment."
User: "What is the meaning of life?"
Siri: "42"
User: "What is your name?"
Siri: "I'm Siri, your personal assistant!"

My favorite:
User: "How old are you?"
Siri: "Old enough to be your assistant, User."
^Hah!
