Now why in the world would I want to call your mother at work - via a speech-to-text command at that? I don't know about this IOS5 stuff. My little Razor is calling me from the bottom of my desk drawer

I'm more concerned about having to deal with people who think its ok to this type of thing on public transport. I have stated several times that this app is no reason to waste your money.

Have a read through my comments. I've acknowledged that the blind have a use for this. I've also said that if you are not blind or have full use of your hands, you DONT need this. If you are not blind, you cant claim to need this. But, you'll waste your money anyway because a big corporation tells you how much better your life will be with this product. Open your eyes.

Honestly no I haven't read all your comments, or at least I haven't connected them all together as they aren't threaded. Just like I'm sure you are familiar with everything I've posted.

As for not needing it you may be right. Just like you don't need a cell phone and you don't need a television and you don't need a....

And again I disagree. I have a need for a cell phone and a tv. I dont need the latest ones though. I'm in favour of embracing technology that brings a use to my life and improves it. Siri doesnt do that. Its a gimmick that Apple would like to become big.

I find it sad that people will first suck up the bull that gets fed to them in these product launches. They are ready with their credit card as soon as they hear the word 'revolutionary'. A word thats possibly more over used today than any other. Apple seem to use it at every announcement of a product.

Or they do include it already but were just not aware of it - we'll find out when it's released. I love all the assumptions about a product people have never even used.

They would have shown it.

I'm so tired of such people, people who have absolutely no taste or understanding of what "experience" means.
Sure anyone who doesnt agree 100% has no "taste" .

Some people obviously don't have a clue about words like "conversation", "context", "logic" etc. You can't possibly fathom a product that has all these things, worse, you go ahead and compare it to something archaic feature in a Microsoft phone.

And this is the problem with people like you, do into your own little world you dont seem to know there are others things out there.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Windows-Phone-Mango-voice-control-gets-video-demo_id20626 Its from a couple of months ago probably better out there but it gies you a nice overview of this 'archaic feature " .

I can hardly wait! Soon everywhere you go people will be talking to their phones like idiots instead of just being annoying having conversations in inappropriate places. Every teenybopper in the country will be hanging around talking to their phone and thinking they are cool. Imagine Starbucks now!! Cool people talking to their iPhone while showing off their Macbook. :D

I think this is the first step we're taking to making Star Trek a reality. Now, if only they could simulate Majel Barrett's voice... cannot comply.

For those that think this is just a novelty, they said the same thing about PalmPilots when they first came out and now cell phones are all about PDAs. Adding voice control only adds another dimension of input such as touchscreen did for regular computers and tablets.

Looking forward to playing with it! I'll be upgrading from my lowly 3GS when my contract ends in a couple of months but I hope that it isn't as big a fail as other voice recognition software when trying to understand Australian accents. Only time will tell I guess.

Dumb questions I've asked the Siri app and responses

Q: What is the meaning of life?
A: 42

Q: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A: Don't you have anything better to do?

Q: What color is grass?
A: Green

Q: How old are you?
A: Old enough to be your assistant.

Q: Are you alive?
A: I'd rather not say.

Q: Why is the sky blue?
A: Wolfram Alpha article explaining why.

Q: Are you tired?
A: Are you?

Really people?

I don't understand the myriad of people trying to bash Siri... Siri is simply meant to be the start of a new and potentially great technology....

Does anyone honestly think apple cares if you liked their Siri idea or not? were not millions of people watching their keynote anxiously for new stuff? is apple going to make millions off of the 4S?

apple has once again succeeded in capturing the attention of millions of people. whether it be good publicity or bad. when was the last time you saw an android phone get this much publicity? when a new PC store opens, do they have news teams from all over come to film the grand opening?

basically what im trying to say is, Apple has succeeded in everything that they wanted to do. if they arent ready to release something, they dont. do people get pissed? yes. but then do those same exact people wait an extra 6 months for the same exact thing? yup.

im not going to make this a novel but think about it people. apple successfully captures peoples imaginations by releasing these things and what everyone is doing right now on this forum is exactly what they want.

Well done Steve Jobs, I hope your legacy lives on in your company for many years to come.

What's it like with non-American accents? Most voice recognition programs are RUBBISH because I wouldn't say "my mom is..." I'd say "my mum is..." (in my native accent) so it wouldn't work.

If it's like anything else Apple, they haven't tested it outside the USA.

hmm...they included german and (either french or spanish) out of the box, so it sounds like they DID test it outside the US.

I saw a hands on of Siri done by some british tech journalist, and it seemed to work just fine with his accent. I cant quite remember where, but there cant be that many hands ons yet so you can probably find it

EDIT: I also recall that he had it set to, instead of a woman with a (computery) american accent, a man with a british accent...so it looks like they took this into account

I have mango. The voice control doesnt work as well as Id hoped. And you still need to speak with "key words." If you want to do something, theres one way of saying it. Thats what the difference between Siri and all the other voice control systems out there is

Lion added a whole bunch of natural computer voices, both male and female, in various accents and languages. I assume Siri can be set up the same according to your own accent and/or preference of voice.

I personally would like a British female voice to get the whole James Bond feel of it even though I have an American accent. Although, locally I should profit from the German voice but I can't think how they translated the voice commands.

Why do you need either?

I find it sad that people will trash something new without even knowing all the details just because it doesn't immediately fit their every need.

And no, Apple will not be getting my money for the 4S. I find it to be a very robust upgrade it but doesn't offer anything compelling enough to me. I would really like to give Siri a try to see what it can do and find out if there are applications I haven't considered. Even so, that alone is not enough to drive an upgrade cycle for me.

the thing is this: there are countless products where the english voice recognition works passable/OK in daily life but the very same, german version, is pretty much unusable

also don't forget similar markets:
in cars voice recognition is a huge market in the US, in most of europe few actually care (as Ford is currently learning with their big push for it)
