Y'know, I totally get why people clamour for bigger screens. When I used a Note for a couple of days and went back to my 4S I was like whoa this is tiny and looks really bad next to the big bright OLED. But, you quickly readjust. And my 4S does everything I need. Albeit a bit slowly at times.

I tried the 6 and plus today at the Apple store. The screens are great and they are really light. But the phones are too big and too thin. I honestly feel they went too far with the thinness this time. They are just hard to hold onto and I could see myself dropping one easily. But maybe Apple doesn't really mind if you drop your $1000 device and have to pay $100+ to repair it and another $50 for a case.

And they are not for one handed use. Just too awkward. And I use my phone one handed all the time. Sure, you'll find workarounds and make the best of it. But they should have kept a smaller device. Pretty sure they will release a 4 or 4.3" some time in the future. Or keep the 5S for a few more years. Because the 5S fits much better in my hand. And my 4S fits perfectly.

I'm satisfied with the iPhone 6 size. It is right on the edge of my comfort level, though. If Apple goes bigger on the 6 it will leave me behind, and the Plus is out of the question (maybe if I didn't have an iPad Air).

They ARE both big, but I've already adjusted to the new size of the 6, it's an excellent compromise between screen size and pocketability.

Im a 6+ owner and I think the 4.7 inch screen is the perfect size for most other people. For me though I prefer having the extra screen real estate. 4" is way too small for 2014. I do think apple shouldve given people options though. With a 4" screen i think there wouldve been design compromises like thickness in addition to functionality compromises. The 5.5" screen is way better for using the browser.

Apple made the perfect cases for the phones this time imo.

Yup, after 2 days I'm really starting to wish they'd gone with 4.5" instead of 4.7"

I think a slight improvement over the 5S was warranted but I am not loving this thing 100%.

Well, I'm 35, and I think I'd have to disagree with you on "the worst user experience possible." I can't think of a single time where I ever thought "man, I just can't do what I'm trying to do" on my 5S. But now I can't actually reach the top of the screen anymore - that's a huge problem.

I realize it kind of goes against Apple's desire to keep product lines simple (which, let's be honest, hasn't been the case for a while), but I think they should have made the 6 in 3 sizes, including a size that was the same as the 5S. I'm seeing a lot of comments in here from people that agree with me, or women who have explicitly stated that they have smaller hands, and are having a tough time. Yeah yeah, the 5S is still available, but I'm sure people would like to use Apple Pay, or have the better camera, or the slimmer phone.

Hmm. Well, since they have (effectively) dropped the 4" line of phones, don't you think Apple did research and found people don't want the 4"? I would think so anyway. But, we are talking about Apple here. How long did people want a bigger screen when they wouldn't make it...and even then only went to 4" from 3.5!

I can't reach to the top corner of my iPhone 6 either. I think most people don't have this need for one-handed use that some of you are so insistent on. I don't expect one handed use on my phone. I also don't expect it on my tablet. I want a screen that is mobile, but large enough that I can more easily see what I want to do. Nobody complained about not being able to use their palm pilots with one hand. I think you guys have to rethink the one-handed requirement.

I have to say, as I think about it, I adjust my grip so that I can do things with one hand when I want to. It just doesn't bother me because she only way to fix that is a smaller screen and that would be awful more often than it would be helpful.

I made the switch from an iPhone 4s to a HTC One (M7) in July 2013. It took a few days to get used to the size. I'm sure the same will happen for you OP.

Why do I need to re-think the most natural and intuitive way for me to use a casual mobile device? Because "it's time" for bigger phones? Apple's never operated this way in the past. They don't go out and ask people what they want and then make that - they imagine amazing solutions that tend to fit quite well into our lives. Prior to the iPhone, I never used a phone two handed. All the time I've been using an iPhone, I never used it two handed. I never wanted to, and I never needed to. Now I need to, and for what? To have the bigger screen I never wanted?

I think you guys have to rethink the one-handed requirement.

This.

I actually love the 5S design and wished they had made a 4" version of the new phones. Or maybe 4.3". The 6 is just a tad too big for me. It's giving me hand cramps. lol. I'm trying to readjust how I hold & use it but I'm finding that whenI need to use it one handed I use my pinky finger to support it and now my pinky finger hurts :( (I realize this is a funny statement but it's also true. lol) It is def not a one handed phone. I actually never realized HOW MUCH I used it one handed until now. I knew I did for texting, scrolling but really, I used the 5S one handed more than I thought I did.

Anyway, I'm not returning it but I do hope that the future holds a smaller iPhone for those of us looking for smaller form factors.

^This^

I understand some people's frustrations with the larger form factor but that is simply derived from your lack of experience with the size and unwillingness to accept that Apple was late in increasing the size of the device.

Fact is, Apple finally caught up and produced two outstanding options. That's fine if you want a smaller phone and aren't willing to adjust, but just know that technology is moving forward without you.

I congratulate Apple for crafting two phenomenal devices. Personally, the 5.5" feels perfect. I would probably be happy with a 4.7" as well, but IMO, the iPhone 6 Plus is the best smartphone in the world.

I'm just saying you have to rethink it because they don't make the size phone you want. Truth.

"They don't go out and ask people what they want and then make that..."

Of course they do. One of the most profitable companies in history doesn't do market research? lol. As a result, they must have seen little desire for a 4" screen. Meaning you are in a severe minority...or else we'd have a 4" iPhone 6.

I think if they did a 4.3" phone, with the phone height and width close to the dimensions on the 5/5s - slightly reduced bezels like the new 6... that would be my ideal phone. I really am torn between my 5 and my 6. The 5 screen does look tiny now and 6 screen is just amazing. But when I pick up the 5, I am like MAN this feels so good.

I just hope Apple comes out with some sort of iPhone Mini. Even if I wanted to buy a 5S, to keep somewhat up to date (minus the 6).. I can't with 64 GB. I don't understand how they basically "abandoned" their entire current iPhone customer base by forcing them into an entirely different sized product. Of all the people I know "IRL" with a new 6.. more are questioning their purchase, than not. A few already plan to return the 6. I don't even know how some of you are dealing with the 6 Plus - just laughable.

6 should be 4.3". 6 Plus should be 5".. or maybe still 5.5". Actually, I don't care because I'd never buy either.

I got the 6+ and the hubby picked the 6... He's an otterbox guy and thought the plus would just be too bulky for his pocket. I love the plus, even if it doesn't fit in all my pockets.
I decided to take a 3 generation photo.

Ive come through many many large sized Android devices and i'll say you get used to it.

Try adjusting your grip on the phone. Instead of holding the device mid-palm from lowering it overall. It helps dramatically. I can actually reach corner to corner without adjustment.

Market research and user research are very different things. They don't ask people what they want. In fact, Apple's famous for it. Steve Jobs is even quoted as having said, "people don't know what they want until you show it to them.”

What they did do I'm sure is look at the market and see there was a significant amount of larger phones being sold to people who obviously weren't buying Apple and they wanted a piece of that.

So people want big phones, does that mean that's a good idea? I don't know, George W Bush was elected twice, and how'd that work out?

Well, I do wish they'd just come out with a 5" and kept the 4" for you guys. For me, 4.7" is too small and 5.5" is too big (at least with the huge top bezel).

Whatever "most" people prefer is irrelevant to me. It only matters what I like, not the preference of everyone else.

Since current customers will buy the larger screen anyway, even if it's less than ideal size-wise, mind as well create a larger screen and appeal to a wider customer base, those larger screen users whom Jobs had no interest to appeal to.

Personally, I live in a big city, utilize public transportation and carry a briefcase. Unless I'm sitting at home watching Football on a Sunday, it's infinitely more convenient for me to use one hand, not two.

Ditto. I hope I don't drop it on the subway on Monday. haha. Wait. That's mot funny.

Also, I work in Events Management so often I'm holding my phone in one hand and a clipboard in the other or signing for something or whatever. Point is, I multitask heavily and my hands are not big. :/

I like the larger size about 85% of the time. I do get annoyed when I am trying to use it with one hand and I have to reach the left side of the screen with my right thumb. I have to adjust my grip to a less confident one and I am afraid that I will drop it. I do also wish they had made a landscape mode available for the 6, not just the plus.

Don't panic! Give yourself a week to adjust to the new size
and features. Its just like a new car, you have to get the feel of it.
