I think Bob is coming from the prospective that you dont need an ipad, if you already have a computer or laptop. The fact is, in order to use the ipad you NEED to have a computer PC/MAC.

If you have a computer already, whether it be a laptop or a desktop, you dont NEED an iPad. There is nothing you can do on your ipad that you cant do on your PC/MAC.

I have an iPad, I WANTED it because it was a cool device, and I am a tech whore. Its not great, but a good device. Until they remove the need for another computer IN ORDER TO USE IT FULLY, the device is not needed.

Hence his if you have a 30in tv, you dont need a 50in YOU WANT ONE.

Objectively speaking, of course the iPad is a giant iPod touch. It's just that, about the thousand and one-th time someone comes up to you and says, "Why did you buy an iPad? It's just a big iPod touch!" -- it gets just a tinnny bit annoying. :D

Perhaps. Although the first couple of times I heard it I just nodded and said "Yeah, basically" and then they wanted to play with it and discovered they liked it too. So.....I guess it depends on the method of delivery. I know at least one of these people were trying to rib me about the cost of it but once he started playing with it he didn't want to put it down.

I guess all I'm saying is people make far too much about what other people think. Its your money, spend it how you want and don't bother to rationalize it. There's no need to do so, and by realizing that, you realize other peoples' opinions really don't matter all that much. Unless you live your life worried about other peoples' opinions of course.

I can't play Angry Birds on my PC. :p

There are times when you need a "real" computer / physical keyboard and then there's every other time... which is at about 95% for me. My iPad has not ceased to put a grin across my face. To think I used to depend on a laptop for such menial tasks. Anyone else feel the same way? Sorry I guess I am just too excited about my new toy.

My sentiments, literally.

i hope i don't throw this thread off..

My wifes hospital just recently went to iPads for their doctors. They are converting to the wireless system and will be able to use the EMR on the iPad for viewing and such. By these standards, they NEED the iPad because that will be the device they use to input information onto the server and to pull information off it. :)

There are plenty of situations that people need new devices.

To the OP, Congrats on your new iPad. They really are great.

One final note, the iPod's do not come with a 3g version. :)

Not to correct you or anything, but that's called an iPhone, good sir. :p

Anyway, I love my iPad. I bring it to both my jobs and use it for the entire day without having to charge it like I have to do with my iPhone. I can stream my music without having to waste my data(although I still have unlimited), and on my break time I enjoy the larger screen for catching up on my book reading.

Another sane person right here. ;)

I agree that a tablet form-factor is ideal for a mobile professional, such as a doctor.

What remains to be seen, however, is how easily docs and other professionals adapt to the on-screen keyboard for data input purposes. I still get annoyed when I'm trying to type something one-handed while holding the thing.

I really sat on the fence in the first few months since iPad release. I have a brand new iPod Touch, a brand new MBP and really doubted an iPad would fit into my already complete geekness. But, from the moment I held my very own iPad, it was love at first site. I use my iPod Touch for MANY unique uses (Groceries, HomeRoutines, voice recorder, quick pictures, and listening to podcasts while working around the house and in the yard) and my MBP is my writing machine. The iPad? It goes everywhere with me and I can write and sketch no matter where I am. It's great for viewing movies, reading books during long waits, facebooking and stuff like that. Do I "need" an iPad? No. I didn't "need" the Touch or the Nano's I have purchased either. But my life is much simpler with all of them in their own way.

iPad is infinitely easier to use than a notebook computer when on a plane, the crapper and in bed.

It's the best.

I have an iPad, and I totally don't NEED it. I actually wish I had a NEED for it, because I don't use it as much as should. I have a 11in MBA for things I need a Mac for, such as Quickbooks.

Anyway, more people should think like Bob post-recession. I'm tired of hearing people I know complain about not being able to afford health care, but are buying, in my specific case, a $2k 3D TV. There's nothing wrong with having an iPad, if you can afford it (have taken care of yourself and your family's health care, retirement, savings, etc).

I can't wait for the day the iPad comes out with a rear facing camera and many of those who cried for it loudest then scream "the iPad is too heavy/awkward/large to use as a camera" at which point I will laugh maniacally at the stupidity of my fellow humans after declaring "I told you so". Don't get me wrong, I can see the benefit of a back facing camera, but it would be only for odd occaisonal use. However, I get the impression that many feel that they "need" a back facing camera as adding the ability to shoot video and countless high resolution pictures would validate the ipads existence, whilst every other feature is only a distraction from the iPads destiny as a camera.

if nothing else a camera makes sense for facetime.

I was skeptical when Steve Jobs finally revealed the iPad at their special event. Let's just say that I was underwhelmed. It's what the software developers have done with the iPad that makes it such a "magical" device. Granted, the screen and the speed are amazing, but much of that is starting to be replicated by the likes of Samsung, however the apps are amazing.

I think of Goodreader, ComicZeal, Air Video and VLC to name a few. My commute into work everyday has never been more enjoyable. I carry my iPad, my headphones, my wallet , my iPhone and that's it! Before I carried magazines, a book and a moleskin. Incredible.

I converted my brother. He's getting one next week.

I don't really want to shoot photos on my iPad, but it does have one thing going for it: BIGGEST VIEWFINDER EVER!

Anyway, I'm glad some of you guys turned your opinions around. I think if more people get into the store and actually play around with one for a few minutes, they will see the possibilities. You don't really get it until you actually use it and experience the touch interface. That said, it's not for everyone, but that's fine, it doesn't have to be.

Would you be saying the same thing if the iPhone had come out after the iPad? Or would a lot of people be calling the iPhone a toy? I can just imagine: "How can anyone get any work done on such a tiny screen? It doesn't do anything that thhe iPad doesn't do! Why would anyone want it? It's just a toy!"

the iphone, is a phone thus its productive through its main function. it also has 3G, something not all ipad are capable of so you are connected in more places than you would be using a wifi only ipad, again giving you the potential to be more productive. its fine for taking notes but doing more than that takes more patience than the normal man has.

the ipad is bigger which means taking better notes. without 3G, means you better be near a router or hotspot or you wont be able to search the web to research whatever, or contact that "guy" about that "thing". you also cannot call that "guy" because the ipad is not a phone. lastly, the ipad actually NEEDS a computer to function. yes the iphone does too but it doesnt pretend to be a computer.

That I can envision and would be best suited to a forward facing camera, and I highly doubt that the next iPad would not have a forward facing camera, especially as "tablets such as the iPad offer improved "on-the-go content consumption" and sees consumers looking to the devices as complements or even alternatives to traditional PCs". The more I think about a Facetime/Skype camera, the more likely I am to get the next iPad if it is included.

But the iPad is not suited to being held at eye level due to its size and weight, which would make the back facing camera nothing more than a seldomly used feature, so even if one is added, I would not be surprised if it has a very low resolution (similar to the iPod Touch) in order to keep the costs down.

The only problem is that I really liked having my iPad for university as it allowed me to not need to print out the masses of readings and research papers that I consumed in the course of my last semester, but now that I have finished I find myself craving for another opportunity to use it in such a productive manner. But I am sure that it will not fail to impress me again as we are moving overseas in a fortnight and it will come in very handy when I start looking for a new job as well as supplementing my Italian - I found a very good translation app that is very accurate for English-Italian and vice versa translations but which requires internet acces, fortunately Tre Italia have a very cheap iPad 3G plan.

I was one of those non-believers who mocked the ipad from day 1. An oversized ipod and for $500 no less. It just seemed retarded to me. Why not just by a netbook or a full out notebook for less?

I'm into comics, I like reading, I'm guilty of passing endless hours casually surfing the web and abuse netflix like nobody else out there. Yet I could not see any value in an ipad... overcoming my objections wasn't easy, but needless to say I am now an ipad owner.

Has anyone ever gotten that awkward feeling when you've been put in your place by undeniable proof? Or, you're just embarrassed because perhaps you spoke to soon, or didn't have all the facts to make an informed opinion? Well yeah.. thats how I feel.

The iPad is unreal. This 10 inch slab of awesomeness has already over night revolutionized how I read books, comics, and surf the net among many other things. Tap and interact. God, this is just awesome. There are times when you need a "real" computer / physical keyboard and then there's every other time... which is at about 95% for me. It's pretty funny you say that. It's completely changed my comic/graphic novel/reading habits. I've also starting drawing again. All those things are due to how darn convenient it is as a device. It's the PERFECT comic viewer.

These things are going to explode. Most people have their objections washed away after a little while playing with the device. It helps to see the iPad not as a big iPhone, but really an iPhone as a mini, more portable, less-great iPad. iPhone/iPod Touch=mini iPad.

The iPad doesn't pretend to be a computer, people just expect it to be. And there's plenty that you can do on an iPad without a constant internet connection:

- I have tons of work PDFs on it so I can read them on the train, for example. An iPhone is too small for that and a laptop is too awkward.
- I also have to do a daily report for work, a simple spreadsheet. Instead of doing it on paper during the day and typing it when I get home I can do it straight from the iPad and I'm done with work when I get home.
- I have all my music scores (I play violin) on the iPad. Again, iPhone or laptop are not good for that. The app I use also includes a metronome and if I want to I can also sync the songs I play so I can play along.
- I've been also using painting apps (like Sketchbook Pro) and for that, again, the iPad is better than the iPhone or a laptop. I used to have a similar app on my Mac but always found it too awkward to use.
- I had a bunch of family recipes in an old notebook that was starting to get some pages stained, others ripped off. I now have them all on the iPad, it's very easy to use in the kitchen, and the app also backs up all the recipes to the cloud so I know I won't lose them.

Look, it's fine if you don't like or don't want the iPad. But this nonsense that the iPad doesn't have any real usefulness is getting old.

That isn't actually a fact. My mother has an iPad and no PC or Mac.

I activated it and update it when she comes to visit. Pretty much the same situation as when she had a PC.

I used to refer to Macs as Fischer Price computers.....

We all think we know a hell of a lot more than we actually do. Does us all some good to realize we are wrong every now and again.

Which requires what again?

Exactly.

Huh? Your statement that I quoted was wrong. My mom uses an iPad as her only computer. She does not have a PC/Mac.

Perhaps, but his point was that the only way to activate/update it is through a computer. Your computer is acting as that iPad's computer.

So while technically you don't need to own a computer to have a functional iPad, you need access to a computer to which you can sync the iPad in order to have an optimal experience - updating, backing up, syncing music and photos, etc.
