Just read the article on Gizmodo and yet nothing here! This should be Page 1 news Arn! Waz up with that?

The article sure looks genuine! If it's a Gizmodo prank, it will surely cost them!
PR wise!

I think this is true though! Let's see how long it takes to make news here!

what I hope for

I hope that apple announces a new type of product that explores another area of the tech industry that we weren't thinking of...... for example what if apple announced that they were going to have a portable book reader? I'm just sayin'

LOL an apple book reader could change the industry for the better: you get a book reader and it can also act as an iPod, but it will have some intuitive way to read books... LOL how silly does that sound???

oh and what if Shiller says that he has taken over for Stevo for all keynotes... then what?!?!?!

With the recent news that he won't be presenting, I'm praying that Steve shows up at the end and says: "Oh, and one more thing..." to introduce them. That would be so awesome, but I seriously doubt it would ever happen. :(

Yeah makes great sense. NOT.

A product meant to be a cheap closed system to customers can save money due to the poor economy. Sounds like a great idea. Then he says it is restored with iTunes. Okay, that means you need another Mac with iTunes on it. If you are trying to save money, you're most likely not buying a second computer.

This is basically saying, if you want this device, you need to already have another device, which would most likely turn away perspective buyers. Especially those who don't already own a Mac.

Also, Steve Jobs has explicitly said that he believes Netbooks are a niche market and that Apple has no current plans to deliver one to market. If there were any such possibility, I think he would've made a comment like "you'll have to wait and see" or some other similar Jobs-esque comment.

In other news, Idiot Corporation Grants "Analyst" Title To Idiot.

The MacBook Air is the netbook. Get over it.

The 1799$ netbook with a 13.3" screen?

In case you don't know, a netbook is between 300$-500$, it has a screen that is generally between 7"-11" and is meant for surfing the web, word processing and in some cases, media such as the Acer Aspire 1. Most of them have Intel Atom processors.

The Macbook Air does have some features that a netbook would have such as a SSD, long battery life and weighs less than 3 lbs.

Oh and nearly all netbooks have an optical drive.

Great minds think a like. I just posted something similar on the page 1 threads. Not about the netbooks, but about Steve showing up at the end, introduces a new product and then talk a little about why no more Stevenotes, No More Macworld, and where Apple is heading.

As someone who first used a IIe in 1984, started folliwng Apple in 2004, and then in 2008 spent $3500 to convert my entire platform to apple (including buying my wife a mini), and also start encouraging my employer to embrace macs - I am seriously concerned, worried, anxious, and hopeful all at the same time.

As far as my tablet or netbook wishes. I found the perfect one (spec wise, have not had the oppportunity to try or buy one of these). I just wish it ran OSX, so this is my hopes for one from Apple running OSX as aroung the same price. then I can buy that and a projector and then I am set for my teaching ministry, plus not have to worry about taking my $2000 macbook on vacation.

Also that slide in docking station to go with it would be nice.

I tend to doubt analysts who say that Apple must release certain products because of financial pressure or the popularity of other products. Apple doesn't always hit the exact target, with the right products released at the right time, but I think Apple stays ahead of the market more than it follows, and sticks to long-term development plans rather than shifting direction each time the economy goes bump.

apple will never introduce a netbook unless they absolutely have to (ie.. the company is going to go bankrupt). There will be NO netbooks. sorry people

Oh and nearly all netbooks have an optical drive.

No. They do not.

My brother just bought an MSI Wind last night, it looks like a very nice little machine. I was thinking about one of those, too. He's toying with putting OS X on it, but with my primary computers being Macs I think it might be handy to have a little machine for the occasional Windows-centric task.

Eat your own before someone else does...

Some people espouse a marketing theory that says you should never cannibalize your own sales by introducing products that will eat into sales of existing devices. However there is a contrarian view to that saying that it is better to eat your own before someone else does.

Never has this issue been more clear than in discussing the merit of Apple entering the NetBook sales arena -- an area that is filled with low-cost, low performance products (with many being of poor quality and lacking any element of design style).

The NetBook products are distinguished by three criteria
1) They are physically small and light
2) They tend to be able to run for many hours (6 to 8) on a single charge
3) They are cheaper than traditional notebooks

Apple's Air actually exceeds the size/weight performance by packing a much larger screen (13 inch 1280x800 vs 10 inch 1024x600) into a 3 pound package at the cost of a somewhat larger enclosure. But fails on battery life (1/2 to 2/3) and cost (3x to 5x).

It would be very easy to argue that should Apple participate in the NetBook arena. But that would decimate the sales of the Macbook Air and the low-end Macbooks.

But won't the current NetBook offerings just eat Apple Sales (violating the "eat your own before someone else does" school of thought)?

Absolutely NOT. There isn't a NetBook out there that offers the OS X experience that Apple does (although people are quickly working on porting OS X to several NetBooks).

NetBooks appear to be devouring the bottom of the PC market, at the same time that Apple is devouring the top of the PC market.

No way will Apple participate in the NetBook trend until it is absolutely clear that they must. Until then Apple will enjoy higher margins and growing sales.

PS: You could conclude that Apple is already in the NetBook market through the sales of their Iphone and touch products, which offer excellent user experiences in a connected mobile world.
