I think they are going to announce the tablet, but not release it yet. There has been nothing seeded to developers or anything about it yet. I'm guessing Sept. 9th announcement and January release.

There is another possibility: Apple will have an event in October to not only show the new MacBook/MacBook Pro laptops, but show the tablet computer for the first time, probably with a 9" (diagonal) display screen. It will run an enhanced version of the iPhone OS 3.1 that supports the larger screen and will include as much as 128 GB of flash memory storage.

there might not be a voice phone capability but cell data is a possibility

It may be worth noting that Windows 7 has a native telephony API set, so any system can be a phone - over 3G/4G, WiFi, wired or whatever.

What would be the point of crippling a device so that it can't be a telephone?

Haha, I always disabled that service whenever I'd install windows since I know I'd never use it. Almost forgot about it.

Blue Tablet, Red Tablet

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue :apple: Tablet - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.
You take the red :apple: Tablet - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

college students speak up!

Responding to charlituna:

a true netbook isn't made for papers and such. and a lot of college students go for a full on laptop. as evidenced by the number of units Apple sells every summer to students

I think the reason why there is a large number of Apple units sold to college students is because there are students who want a Mac and want Mac OS. If there was a netbook size (10" to 12") I think college students would opt for that. What do the college students forum members say to this? How many of you college students with 15" or 17" macs wish you had something smaller to carry around. How many even find the 13" mac inconvenient?
I have a feeling too that a lot of the students with 15" 17" also use a second monitor.

And note that the 13" Mac is not convenient for writing papers either.

I think a 10-12" Mac tablet, with a full keyboard, touch screen, and the ability to hook up a large monitor (for research intensive work at home/dorm where you might need one monitor for your paper and one monitor for your pdfs, internet, Sente, Devonthink, etc) would be almost the perfect portable for the college student. If it was sub $1000 then it would even be more attractive for the poor college student.

When away from the large monitor, it will be used mainly for taking lecture notes, reading pdfs, proofreading, etc. I'm not a twitterer, texter, messenger, gotta-listen-to-music-all-the-time person, so the only thing I would probably have running is my word processor when away from my home base.

At least this is what I would want. What do other college students want?

I can actually confirm this...

We had lunch today with a group of Verizon High Ups, and one of them pulled out a device that is around 10" and looks like a 10" iPhone. He explained that he had it on Loan from Apple.

I tried to snap a picture but I was unable... I am wondering though what does a high up from Verizon doing with one?? Do you guys think apple is working something out with verizon to offer on these tablets, just like amazon did with sprint?

I did manage to see the device was running a gui similar to the one found on the iphone.

Just my .02 cents.

they just upgraded the laptops. not likely they will do it again in less than 4 months.

i foresee that they are going to move the laptop and ipod updates to the late spring to launch them with the back to school. the promo is great and new product releases are great. the two together would be like chocolate and peanut butter. it won't happen right away but the June laptop update is a step in that direction.

move the phones to late summer and the imacs to the fall (they are the more family system that's more in keeping with holiday shopping)

Not for a very very long time.

Talking to a computer, (or rather your self) is a sign of time to see a shrink.

if you answer your self, well, it may be to late to see that shrink :D

Actually, it is worse if you start telling jokes to yourself....

And totally bonkers, when you tell yourself: "Stop, I've heard that one before!"

I don't buy the 6" rumor either. Who is that for?

Perfect for your purse. Plus, if you're a middle aged woman (who on average can spend more than college guys), you won't have to put on your reading glasses to see the display. Netbook? No way. It makes a woman look more like a secretary than a top executive.

Um... wow. As much as I really hope you're telling the truth, there are a number of elements in your post which would suggest you're trolling.

Are having multitouch capabilities and pen-input (for drawing precisely) mutually exclusive?

Also, I just don't see how multitouch would suddenly make it marketable. That one confuses me =\

Pen and multitouch input are not mutually exclusive.

Multitouch makes many "natural" gestures practical... rather than the bastardization of funneling/converting everything to keystrokes and mouse input. For example, you want to underline something, just do it (instead of a return keystroke and multiple dash keystrokes (or select the text and change to an underline font style.

Multitouch is only part of the equation. The underlying hardware and software (the UI) is what makes the device understand what you want to do, and then does it.

Simply stated, a touch tablet [done right] is the universal appliance. It can be [almost] anything you want it be... and nothing needs to stand between you and what you want the appliance to do!

But, if you prefer a stylus, why not! The UI can automatically adjust to accept the greater precision and enhanced capability (pressure, etc.).

Why do people put so much weight upon what these idiot "analysts" say?

These were the same idiots that said:

  • Apple was going out of business
  • Or that the Mac was dead.
  • Windows would never fail
  • the iPod was a joke
  • the iMac (original) design was ridiculous
  • the lack of floppy drive on the iMac doomed it to failure
This is also the same bunch of idiots that
  • Thought that "socks.com" was a great investment
  • bid up "boo.com"
  • thought that the idea of buying books online was counter-productive, who would EVER do such a thing (a bazillion Amazon customers, that's who)
  • put out "buy" orders for Enron, Tyco, etc.
Oh, and let's not forget:
  • Created investments out of really bad debts
  • Said that firms like CountryWide Mortgage had a great business model
  • Lehman Brothers was a great investment
  • Wachovia was a great investment
  • Thought it was a GREAT idea to change the rules so that people who had hardly any money and had NO business buying a home could magically pay nothing down and get a mortgage for a $500k house
When it comes to technology trends and companies, frankly any techno-geek worth a da&% can make better predictions just by watching Rumors sites.

Who cares.

I could care less about a tablet. Given the functional coverage provided by an iPhone and a small laptop, there is very little room between them that requires a smaller laptop, or a bigger iPhone.

I just want Apple to drop AT&T exclusivity and get on the Verizon network.

I posted something here about verizon testing and something being announced from verizon regarding iPhones.
There are regions in the US, as hard as it is to beleive, ATT has no coverage and Verizon does.
One of those regions my friend has an in on all communication operations for his county. He sees the latest gadgets an talks t the field reps testing the devices.
Verizon has their grubby little hands all over apple devices, their denial is strictly due to the way apple does business.
Call it trolling or whatever the protocol at MR is. Verizon is extremely active right now. time will only tell whether it will be a 6" 10" or a smaller version of the iphone

Pure speculation. I doubt the new tablet will run a modified version of iPhone OS. Plus, Apple wouldn't introduce two totally different designs in one event.

I still don't see the point of a tablet for general consumer market. Really, it's been tried already. Only businesses and medical field have some use for a tablet. Then again, most are using PDAs (or more recently iPhones) since they are smaller and do most of the same job. If Apple wanted to release a product, they wanted it to cater the general consumer market, not just a niche industry. Yeah, a tablet might sound cool since it's new and shiny or whatnot, but a regular consumer will end up just using an iPhone/iPod Touch. It seems that a Mac tablet is a solution looking for a problem, and the rumor mill are flocking on it to generate hits/click.

I call BS on this.
WTF would someone use a 6'' tablet for that they don't use their iPod touch for?

The problem I have with the 3.5" screen is that web content is either too small to read or badly truncated requiring endless scrolling. I'm eagerly waiting to see what Apple brings out in the way of a larger model.

The Sept Event

Ok, everyone calm down.

Here is what the event will be, plain and simple:

Snow Leopard is released.
iPod Touch will get the camera capabilities and all just like the iPhone.

Ok?

Frankly the iPod update is not that big of a deal, so it will be mentioned briefly. There may be a few small updates to the iMac and even the Pro desktop ... stuff like hard disk, memory, etc. So maybe a bunch o these small things will be mentioned or, more than likely, Snow leopard will be THE topic of discussion. The other smaller items will be released as separate PR items, and the traffic and press generated by Snow Leopard will spill over into the other smaller product updates as well.

This will all solidify the product line in time for the holidays.

Meanwhile the channels will clear out inventory of the older Macs that are out there with Leopard disks, the older iPods will get sold off, etc. The whole product like will be cleaned up, stable, and marching into the 4th Quarter.

Get ready for a Snow Leopard media blitz that will throw darts at Windows 7. Also be ready for the unveiling of at least 1-2 more col features in Snow Leopard that have been kept under-wraps.

As you were.

I just want Apple to drop AT&T exclusivity and get on the Verizon network.
Do you really want the iPhone with an even more draconian provider? Plus the fact that most of the world are using GSM, not CDMA.
The only time I see this happening is when Verizon (and AT&T too) is switching to LTE. Going from 1 provider to another probably won't change anything. I just rather see Apple selling iPhones unlocked (and/or force AT&T to sell it unlocked), like what they have been doing in some countries.

iTablet???

Wouldnt it b funny if these iTablets arent even as good as everybody thinks and it was just a huge hype for nothing?!?!
