Analyst Predicts 2017 iPhone 8 'Mega Cycle' With OLED, Wireless Charging, and No Home Button

Do people forget that these are all rumors? Just like the iPhone SE and those curved edges that never surfaced. It's all a lot of ********. They don't even need to remove the 3,5 jack, just look at the iPod Touch, its 6,1mm thin, but still features an normal jack. These so-called journalists need to use some common sense instead of rewriting every goddamn rumor from analists that don't know jack.

So the 2016 iPhone should be dismissed as there are rumours flying around concerning new technologies that MAY be connected to the 2017 iPhone? I don't think so.

I'm beginning to wonder if Apple have done this on purpose, maybe do some controlled leaks and mix things up so that leaks are more difficult to believe. We will probably see more in the coming months when leaks from the supply chain start happening. Either way I'm hoping the dual camera rumour is true, i will be upgrading since i currently have the 6 Plus. Someone else did point out a very good point as well, what if all these rumours and talk are instead in regard to the iPhone Pro that has been rumoured?

It does make you wonder doesn't it? The secrecy is gone, so maybe create doubt and confusion :)
Very true. The connections drawn to specific devices can be tenuous at best.

Samsung has had fast wireless charging for 2 years now. Now if Apple can make wireless charging that can charge devices within several feet I will be amazed, I highly doubt that will be the case though. It's going to be the same method of laying your phone down on some special charger that we currently have.
Phil Schiller said a few years ago that having a matt is a pointless design. I've been watching Apple's patent releases on wireless charging for a few years now.

The reason Apple has held off is because they want a real solution, not a "neat-o!" matt.

OLED: Consumers don't know or care.
Wireless Charging: When Apple figures out a good way to do this, it will be unique and a first of its kind.
No Home Button: This isn't an improvement.

So your saying when two displays are side by side consumers can't distinguish which one looks better?

Since when is wireless charging "next generation"? Android phones have had it for half a decade.

I initially had the same reaction as you. That sentence should have been written "...and new features like next-generation wireless charging" to differentiate between the current generation of wireless charging. Wireless charging itself is not new but what they're working on is.

I'm not sure I like the idea of removing the home button. In a pinch, it unfreezes the phone.

All the iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro have on them is a power button. In the rare case where you need to do a hard reboot, you just hold down that button for ten seconds.

The iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch each have 5 physical controls beside the touch screen:
Home Button
Lock Button
Volume +
Volume -
Mute/Rotation Lock Switch

Seems to me that Apple could ditch the Home Button and make it so hard reboots are either done by:
Hold the Lock Button for 10 seconds
Or if that's too easy to accidentally do:
Hold the Lock Button + either of the Volume buttons for 10 seconds.

Could actually be next gen charging:

Rumors surrounding this year's iPhone 7 have focused on its removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, and its 2017 successor has even been the center of a few reports, but this week Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz has speculated Apple will skip its traditional "S" upgrade cycle next year altogether. Citing industry sources, Moskowitz says the Cupertino company won't debut a spec-bumped, internally upgraded "iPhone 7s" in 2017, but a completely overhauled "iPhone 8" with "major design changes" and new, next-generation features like wireless charging.

The "mega cycle" upgrade could increase iPhone sales by 10.3 percent, according to the analyst, adding that in addition to wireless charging the iPhone 8 could pack an OLED display, a completely altered form factor, and no home button. Previous reports have suggested Apple is working with suppliers to begin manufacturing OLED panels in 2017 for its iPhone lineup, as well as develop an in-house single-chip solution to integrate its touchscreen and display drivers, allowing for a Touch ID-enabled screen and negating the need for a separate home button.

Moskowitz's speculation is in line with rumors that have appeared so far, suggesting the iPhone 7 won't have "any must-have form factor changes," and will include only a few internal tweaks and component upgrades paired with a flagship feature or two such as a dual-lens camera on some models. The company's historic cycle would traditionally see this year as a major iPhone upgrade following 2015's iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus launch, but changes rumored so far have been modest.

As a result, the analyst believes Apple will sell 1.8 percent fewer iPhones this year than it did last year, given users' contentment with their current devices and the rumored modest updates in the iPhone 7. Other rumored updates to the iPhone 7 include redesigned antenna bands, the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, and possibly even a Smart Connector as seen on the iPad Pro.

The less-than-stellar sales for the 2016 iPhone could lead investors to fear for an iPhone market that is "nearing saturation," according to the analyst, but it would only set up 2017's uptick in sales for the redesigned iPhone 8. Some reports point to interesting new design overhauls for the 2017 iPhone as well -- including the switch from aluminum casing to glass -- but Moskowitz's previous predictions haven't been entirely reliable, so his forecasts for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 should be taken with a grain of salt.

Onviously these are just rumors...BUT....how convenient that the 6s is when Apple rolled out their own upgrade program that many signed up for (including me) and suddenly the next generation is looking like a lame duck in favor of 2017. I can't help but feel like Apple knowing their plan for the next 2 phones while we play with the current one would have made launching this program more compelling for the iPhone 7, now it has the feeling of getting the shaft when the 7 should have been the tick in the cycle. I would say perhaps they wanted to get it started before a major shift in design so that they aren't getting killed on a new program while selling a gazillion iPhones during a major launch like the 2017 one is shaping up to be. But that cannot be the case, see the many many recent problems where volume caused an issue with ordering, stocking, streaming, live tweeting events etc. etc.

I'm supposed to upgrade my iPhone 6 in February 2017. On the one hand, I don't really want to wait until September 2017, as my current phone is quite slow and I'd really appreciate faster touch ID and 3D Touch.

But it looks like the iPhone 7 will be really, really boring, and hardly an upgrade, while waiting 7 months would lead to a massive upgrade... but that's an extra 7 months after already having the 6 for two years.

I really wish Apple would keep its tick-tock cycle. I like being on the non-S cycle, while skipping to the iPhone 8 will presumably place S-upgraders on the non-S path, and vice versa.

I think the author meant next generation for iPhone, not smartphones in general.
Yeah, when I first read it I was given the impression that they meant wireless charging in general was "next generation", but after reading it again it sounds like they are talking about the next iPhone having more advanced wireless charging technology

Since when is wireless charging "next generation"? Android phones have had it for half a decade.

And it already exists with mag safe and the Apple Watch. Hopefully they mean wireless charging that's actually innovative. Like, you're in the same room as your wall adaptor so your phone charges. Not just resting it on a plastic pad.

Just having the number 8 in the name will boost sales in the Chinese markets, given their obsession with that number.

So your saying when two displays are side by side consumers can't distinguish which one looks better?
What makes you think consumers put two displays side by side?

hopefully they'll use a wireless charging standard and not some propietary thing.
Hopefully they will NOT use any of gimmick-junk-joke-of-a-feature that has passed for wireless charging with the inferior Android class.

Well, I don't even have to say hopefully. I should say, knowfully. Apple has already acknowledged that current wireless charging solutions are a joke. When Apple does it, it will be something completely new and unique.

Why did I question the author that said wireless charging is "next generation"? Because it's not.

What's not done right about the current implementation? What differences do you think Apple could possibly make that current wireless charging capable phones can't do now?

With a cable i can at least charge and use phone at the same time. When you can charge and use it while holding in your hands and not poking at it on the desk then wireless will be truly wireless.

I take it you have never been to a cellphone store?
