My mother may help that statistic. She read the email Apple sent out about the Air and called me up to ask if that would be good for her. I said yes!

Now I'm not sure they're going to sell quite that many  but I do believe it will be quite a hit, especially with women and travelers and its perfect right before the holidays. Its a big lust item right now and I don't even travel much, but I'd still love one.

I was also really surprised (pleasantly so) that these MBA's came with a minidisplay port. This means you can drive your 24/27 inch Apple displays at the same resolution (I recall) as my Core i7 MBP can. That is impressive. Also, with the Monoprice minidisplay + USB *to* HDMI dongle for $49, you can drive HDMI output to an LCD TV pretty easily. Not sure if this includes digital audio (???), but it could be great.

Didn't Apple update their minidisplay ports to transmit audio as well, so USB audio is no longer needed?

For the specs...they seem kind of expensive.
It's an Apple what do you expect? A premium machine at a premium price, I ordered mine yesterday.

No one really neeeds that thin of a computer, other than image.
You may feel this way but plenty of people are going to enjoy these.

I could care less about image, this is a computer I'm buying. What I care about is the thin, light form factor when traveling.

Hyperthreading since we're stuck with dual core notebooks. I need just a one or two more threads. I can't write off my computers as a business expensive and I don't have any grants padding my wallet.

Need one or two more threads ? You actually ran a piece of software that failed to execute and upon exit said "this software requires one or two more threads" ?

Seriously, which piece of software is this, maybe I can avoid it.

Tell that to Apple and my trapped data. Thank God I managed to stop caring about Spotlight.

If you can consult your data it's not trapped. You're just too lazy to convert it. Maybe instead of posting here you want to get to it if you don't like Apple products anymore.

Why pay todays prices for last years tech?

I think its more principal than anything. I dont care whether I NEED an i5 or i7.. You are right who needs that?

But I presume if you frequent this forum you are aware of tech. Being in that position, doesnt it suck knowing that if you want to buy apple, you want to pay a premium price for last years tech??

I seriously would be more pissed at paying for a Core i3 only to get stuck with an Intel X4500 and sub par performance. And what's wrong with paying for last year's tech at today's prices exactly ? I'd much rather pay current market prices for tech than pay last's years prices for it. Tech tends to go down in price over time.

Seriously, again, what does Last year's tech lack compared to Core i3 ? Which piece of software does not execute ? Considering the huge trade off in GPU performance, what is it do we get ?

Hint : Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I can't wait for my C2D Air to get here so I can use it as my main and only machine and run VMs, Xcode, Eclipse, CS5 apps, etc.. on it without a hiccup.

What does a Core 2 Duo offer over a Pentium III? Software eats up more and more resources with every release... Thats why people desire to have an up to date processor. Anything from Flash, Google Maps, movies, iphoto, Photoshop, Office is going to be noticeably slower on a 1.4 C2D.

Sorry, but Flash, Google Maps, movies, iphoto, Photoshop, Office ran fine on much older processors. When my CPU is doing 95% idle time, I am not even close to CPU bound at all running those apps.

There's nothing noticeable about it. We're not talking about mathematical simulations or synthetic benchmarks here. Processors have been way too fast for the last 10 years or so. I always get the lowest clocked CPU when upgrading to a new laptop. It saves tons of money.

Would you pay a grand for a Pentium laptop if it had an Apple logo on it? What about a 20 gig hardrive? Why not?

Apple does not sell those things. Strawman is made out of straw.

And as to your second point, the purpose of this forum is to debate things just like this.. Not to worship a certain corporation.

I think the new Airs are by far the worlds best netbooks... but they are being sold at premium notebook prices.

Form factor is a feature. You pay more to get more features. Hint : The Air is priced appropriately when you compare it to laptops with the same features. A lot of people have shown that the Air is a bargain compared to the Sony Vaio comparables.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. And seriously, me worship Apple ? I've been called a hater more times than I can count. Tell that to someone else.

Like but do not presently need. Will see where the MBAir is being developed into. A notebook can only get so thin, this goes for the iPT4, iP4 and, iPad. :apple: loves thin, thinner, thinnest in the industry so I am curious to see how far this mantra can be pushed. :D

Good chance that the next revision will have WWAN options. It will group the iPad and MBAir for Table and Notebook portability. Or maybe the iPad is going to get cheaper, who know?

700,000. In roughly 2 months. In this economy... Ok... What are these guys smoking?

I know the economy still needs improvement, but the people that usually buy Apple hardware are doing pretty well. We are no longer in a recession and people are getting raises and the stock market is on the rise. These things are the reason that Apple sold record number of hardware this past quarter. I think they will sell 700k worth of the new machines if there is ample supply.

Are you saying that you don't care so much about the thickness and the weight, but the footprint is most important. The 12 inch PB was 3cm thick and weighted 5 lbs. If that was a common pattern of thought Apple could have been in the money some years ago.

For me, footprint is absolutely most important and critical. That's the reason the 13" MBA has no chance with me- it's the exact same footprint as a 13" MB or MBP. When it's on my desk, I don't care about thickness- it ultimately takes up the same amount of space as the thicker MBP model.

The 11" MBA now, is an exciting proposition. It not only has a significantly smaller footprint than either my existing 15" MBP and also 13" MB(P)'s, but is also much lighter and thinner. It will be the perfect replacement for my circa-2007 MBP- when the time comes, which will be soon.

Though moving from a MBP to an 11" MBA is kind of like moving down from an S-Class to an entry-level C-Class, all I do is use the internet, use Microsoft Office, iTunes, and maybe iPhoto occasionally. And I travel and move about frequently.

apple really went out with this one.
Certain people want this kind of products it is a niche product not meant for everyones needs.
A macbook air is for people want something ultra portable and the air takes the crown. It is not made from crappy plastic its built to last but also very small. No moving parts means no worries on harddrive failures big deal for some people. Light weight mixed with ultra thinness has its market for people.
My next mac will definitely be an air.

If you need large harddrive, lots of ram and a core i5 or i7 then get a macbook pro!

Disappointed, want multitouch screen "iMactouch" :-(

:p

I want an “iPad” or a macBook Air or an “iMactouch” with multitouch and a bigger screen and more memory in the near future. I own an iPad right now. It is a revolution for me, and I could never be content with pc options without multitouch screens in the future. Multitouch screens is the future for kids and all other playful creative humans. It is The Scoolbook of the future in all kinds of scools and universities. It is a fantastic tool for artists in a surpricingly essential way. For me there is the world before and the world after the iPad, and I will never go back.

If another company would sell the MBA with these specs people would be laughing ... but o yes there is an apple on it than everything is great!!!
Another thing : People said S.J. were right when he said there is no need for a netbook and now a lot of exactly these guys are saying that the small MBA is the best they ever see. It is a netbook!!
Crazy world !!!

It actually isn't if you compare it to similar ultraportables running windows.

Agreed, you're right. Comparing normal Windows laptops against MacBooks there can be some big differences in price, but these diddy ones are a lot closer together.

:) I want one, but having spent nearly £1000 on a MacBook only 3 years ago, I don't feel I've had my money's worth out of it yet. Maybe in 2 or 3 more years. ;)

Um other companies did sell computers with these same specs except with worse graphics cards...

About a year ago they came out.

Most sold sold them for $1600 - $4000

No one Laughed...

http://www.provantage.com/lenovo-405717u~7LENO0WC.htm

They just stopped selling the x301 in July 2010, the starting price was $2500ish...

They did a fire sale for $1299... to get rid of them.

$999 for the 11inch Macbook Air looks pretty goood to me now...

This is replacing a MacBook Pro monster. There's no reason to buy the MacBook Pro anymore. No one with any sense is actually do video editing with a laptop anymore.

i am.......... and i think i have alot of sense, hows this laptop for video editing ($1399 is the price without the backpack and mouse)

i7 740QM Quad core CPU
8GB of ram running at 1333MHz
Dual Patriot inferno 120GB SSD's (as single drives so i can encode from 1 to the other)
GTX460 1.5GB GDDR5 video card
2year warranty by default
1year accidental warranty by default
30day zero dead pixel warranty by default

some people need to do video editing on the road

For everyday tasks, my $999 MBA is faster than my $2,200 i7 iMac because of the flash storage, which, by the way, is faster than any SSD Apple has ever shipped. The latest C2D chips were released in 2009, so it's hardly 2.5+ year hardware.

no, core2duo architecture was released over 3 years ago, the pos MBA cpu is slower than some netbook cpus from both intel and AMD, acer already had i3 ultra thin and light laptops in the 11.6 formfactor discontinued and replaced with i5s.

Acer i3 with crap Intel graphics. I prefer Apple's choice of sticking to the nVidia IGP. Look, the Air is not a computer for you, and that is fine. No one is holding a gun to your head.

And seriously, what Netbook ships with something better than an Atom or Athlon Neo ? Those are both slower than the C2D part in even the base 11.6" MBA.

I have a Quad Core i7 930, 8 gigs of DDR3 2100 ram, and Two Terabytes in Raid 5 on my power machine (running OSX... Hackintosh). If I need to use that processing power I just VNC into it and bam I can use all of that power from wherever I am. I can't however lug around my 15" Macbook Pro wherever I am.

Macbook Air 11.6.. due sometime next week. I wish Apple was faster :(

Kinda hard to laud the iPad and dis the MBA2. Both are clearly "paradigm shift" cloud-oriented devices., with the latter being everything the naysayers insisted the iPad should be but wasn't.

I wonder why such a "cloud oriented device" does not offer built-in 3G access, at least as an option?
No, for me WiFI is not an alternative. Germany does not have many open WiFI hotspots but good 3G coverage and paid hotspots tend to be more expensive than 3G.

A USB 3G modem is a deal braker on such a device IMHO. Too bad, I will have to stick with my hackintoshed Leonovo netbook w/ 3G instead....

I really wanted a top end 2.13 GHz 13" MBA, but it was too damn expensive for me right now. Oh well, looks like I am going to be getting the 13" MBP instead :p.

my wife is going to give her old macbook away and buy an 11" air. She spends much less time on her laptop. Most of the time she's playing around with her android.
