Multiple colors are unnecessary... Is Apple catering the iphone to elementary kids now? Just bring on the 4.8" iphone!

No, they are trying to bring back all the girlie "gotta have my pink or purple Android smartphone" customers that they lost to Samsung and Google.

Cuz you know... Android has "variety" (sizes, shapes, colors) and that's a huge reason it appeals to the masses.

I seriously hope the iPhone is not offered in more than 2 colors; black & white.
When using my phone, I do not want to look like I'm using an iPod Touch, or want to see anyone else using it.

I would actually be up for only one color: Aluminum.
Modify the iPhone to a tear-drop, Macbook Air-esque form, that has a glass front panel similar to an iPad with edge to edge display real estate.
And no home button.

No need for more storage capacity, Apple is moving AWAY from local storage.
ie iCloud, iTunes Match, possible streaming service.
Don't we acknowledge that the future is moving towards ultra portable and light streaming/cloud based devices?

If Apple gets caught in a spec-based race against Samsung/others, and looses its creative take on devices we use everyday, then we can say goodbye to Apple in the coming years.

I agree, but I see Apple loosing to Samsung and others not based on hardware and color specs but on developing real smartphone features. iOS is tacky and stale compared to even Android Ice Cream Sandwich let alone Jelly Bean.

Google's cloud services are dominating and platform agnostic, making iCloud look as bad as the PowerPC. If Apple wants to compete, they need to remember that people are using these devices for work and play, not fashion statements (I agree with you, there should only be at most two colors). Give us a larger screen, we still do too much on these devices to cram it all into a 4" device, and the touch keyboard was never amazing, a wider screen would help.

Lastly they need to seriously revamp iOS. Five swipes to change a setting then get back to where I started is downright archaic.

All that talk, about too large displays, will become irrelevant soon.

"Galaxy S4 or Galaxy S5 will have bendable or even foldable displays by 2014. Just imagine, returning to the legacy of the flip phone with new folding or even "squishy" phones."

Apple, wake up!

The technology looks great. I'm sure it will have a purpose but for a phone it will be very thin, cheap. It will function the same with a OS but will be like paper. I reckon there will always be material based tablets and phones probably no thinner than Ipad mini today. I don't see the bendable phones being adopted fully. Will definitely provide choice though.

Apple wont increese the iPhone size. You cant use 4.8 inch with one hand.

They probably have prototypes of all sizes. For all we know it was one of the old Iphone 5 ones. It probably makes sense to try all sizes to see which fits best.

If they wanted to make 4.8" inch the question is why did they not make Iphone 5 wider as adopting 4.8" can't mean it will be taller, just wider..

I think that since everyone likes humongous screens, apple should just give the iPad cellular abilities and then they'd have a huge Jump on the competition, 9" phone yeahhhh

Ask any security person with knowledge of NFC...so easily hackable without having to touch the phone....not a good thing....and don't be swayed by the commercials of the Galaxy phones sending videos with the touch of a phone....it's not that fast to move video data instantly....

I was actually a bit curious on how this transfer by touching phones worked, but not curious enough to go read about it :)

I figured to be as instantaneous as they show, it must only be sending some for of link or shortcut, but that would imply using the same account (in the case of the wife and kids passing vids to the husband/father), but they also indicated he should watch it on the plane where one would not have cell service.

As to the actual topic, I don't see many of these predictions coming true.

I really think they should add another phone next year. iPhone and iPhone Pro just like the macs. Them again, if the customer wants to buy a cheaper lower spec phone, they can always purchase last years model and so on which then defeats the purpose for 2 different phones.

3. iPhone Pro/HD whatver. 4.8" screen 128gb, bigger battery. Quad core etc.

I've always wanted an iPhone Pro. I'm okay with some additional heft in the body to accommodate the following: 4.8" screen, 128gb, bigger battery, iPad equal processor (A6x currently), 8mp or greater camera with a legitimate sensor, a higher quality lens, and an iPad/MBP esque brush aluminum enclosure.

Mainly I just want an iPhone that can compete with a good point and shoot digital camera. I realize the lens is the limiting factor here, but I still think a phone focusing on that could be good.

The only way any of this would be true is if Apple realizes they've gone about as far as they can with the current design/concept.

One thing for sure: If they make a 4.8" iPhone it will sell like crazy (I'm in). Also, they would take the new design (no home button, etc) and scale it down for the 4" model to keep everyone else happy.

Don't see it though, but it's going to be very interesting to see where they go with an iPhone 6.

They wont get rid of the home button coz apple plan to use it as a finger print reader in the future

I stand corrected, although I am sure it would be cost prohibitive for Apple to use in the first place for now, based on how many products ship with a 1024 Gb NAND flash chip today.

Mass production doesn't mean that the OEM is selling them to third parties yet. IMFT's 20nm 64Gb MLC NAND has been in mass production since mid-2011, yet the first product to use it (Intel SSD 335) didn't hit the market until a couple of months ago. That's why nobody is using 128Gb NAND chips yet, they are in production but not available in volume.

However, we are talking about the 2013 iPhone here. By then, 128Gb MLC NAND should be ready for prime time. Sure it will cost a bit more compared to its 64Gb sibling at first but MLC NAND is already below $0.50/GB so it's not like Apple won't get their profits if they release a 128GB iPhone. Phones don't usually use the highest binned NAND anyway since endurance is not really a concern.

4.8" screen, near field communication (NFC), coming in a range of colors...sounds like the iPhone is turning more and more into the Samsung Galaxy S3.

...and exactly what many people like myself want! I have been using iphone since the first model but this time i went for S3 instead of iPhone5 since i didnt think the screen was large enough. S3 with 4.8 is a perfect size for me atleast. Apple could offer 2 models really for both tastes. As it is now they loose customers who are getting a little to used to the "small" screen and want a bigger screen.
Personally i now come to love my S3 but sometimes i do miss the iOS for its simplicity but then again i wont pay that much for the small screen. That is a dealbreaker for me.

I really hope Apple holds the line against these people that are screaming for larger screens.

Apple needs to stick with the current screen size. I don't want a physically larger phone!

128 GB storage would be good, but this hysteria clamoring for a non-Apple sized screen is just insanity.

I think sooner than later you'll see Apple capitalizing on that folding screen technology that's being developed so the 4" iPhone can be folded out to be the 7.9" iPad mini. That's going to be the game changer that will slaughter Android. Probably Apple will call it the iPhad.

People, the key word in the title of this article is "SUGGESTS", not "CONFIRMED".

No need to get so hyped-up over some seemingly weak rumor.

why not a 4.8 screen? If they remove the home button will be space enough for a 4.8 screen without modifying the total size. It won't hurt the easy of usage, try it if you have an iphone5.

It doesn't matter anymore...iPhones are old. It's not going to matter unless they come up with a fresh OS.

I used the iPhones since practically day 1, maybe a few weeks into when the first one was released. I switched over to Windows Phone 8 this past November. Haven't missed iOS...it's stale and hasn't changed.

The only things that have changed with it have been 'stolen' ideas from the jailbreaking community and to be honest they weren't even implemented as well.

But apple is beginning to have to play catchup now. They can only make the iPhone so thin, and they are sacrificing too much in the sake of something no one really cares about.

Love the report, I'm now only holding off on a new iPhone because of the Maps issues, hope they are fixed by the time the next iPhone comes out.

The main issue with Apple Maps is the data, not the app. And the data is already improving (I have noticed POI updates).
