i've been thinking to buy a new desktop and an ipad. people bought a lot of notebooks in the last decade but they never did much with them. they just didn't want to be locked to computing in one place in their home.

you can buy a dell/hp in the $700 and an ipad. the computer will be your master place to save data and the ipad has enough functionality to compute almost anywhere

If I were you I would shell out for a refurb imac or macbook. You won't be disappointed with the end-user experience and that in 5 years, your mac will still work while old pc-boxes will be crippled and unusable.

I agree with both of these statements. Since you brought up how good smartphones are, I feel that Froyo has made it even better. While not as slick as iOS, with Froyo I finally have full laptop style file management and don't need iTunes to act as a 3rd party translator. My phone has the power of an old G4 iBook and that's amazing because it fits into my shirt pocket.

I was using my friends phone with that operating system and I think it is great competition for ios, I think because of that competition we will be seeing great advances in smartphone technology compared to the relatively slow evolution of the PC.

This chart is meaningless... they said they didn't know if netbooks were included in this data, and/or what the data for netbooks is. Without that, it's impossible to draw any conclusions here.

Isn't the decline in sales simply caused by back to school syndrom... 5 months early, ppls wait, research, save up, and splurge in september

... not trying to argue that light-computing isn't a good idea, rather that the iphone is better suited for that task.

I would generally disagree. I really like the iPhone for the portability. But for reading web pages, PDF's or movies, pics, etc, or anything that was design for a bigger screen, I prefer something more the size of an iPad.

Sure you can read stuff on a phone (any smartphone), but it's not convenient, comfortable, constantly resizing or scrolling. Same applies to lengthy videos/movies, etc... good portability but too small to enjoy.

I'm not a heavy gamer, but i prefer a slightly larger screen for that too.

if anything, I can't wait for the competing tablets to come out - in various sizes, and configurations.

Hummm.... honestly, I don't know why people say the laptop is dead? I see a place for both. My MacBook does it all in place of a workstation for the type of work I do, yet I'd consider an iPad for games and casual internet use while at home or on the road. I'd rather take an iPad on the road than my MacBook, but it's nice to have the option.

Correlation doesnt imply causation.

The iPad is still pretty new and has very limited sales numbers (when compared against the entire notebook market). Other tablets have sold even less, way less actually.
It would be interesting to know whether netbook were included here, because there sure is a ton of those sold. I even have students in my computer science /programming lectures showing up with them, and not only a few.

I can't speak for him, but when I have been using the word elderly I mean senior citizen 70 year old grandparents. Not trying to say the ipad is only for "old people", just that for my grandparents and my girlfriend's grandparents they find the small keys and spacing of the keyboard on the iphone hard to use and the text too small, so the ipad is an inherently better device for the elderly than an iphone.

His point was that tablets are not for young people.

Not that iPads are better than smarphones for old people.

hmm

I might be alone in this but i think its just because notebook specs outpace software . IF you have a core 2 duo notebook with a decent gpu unless you game heavily you dont need an upgrade. Who needs a new laptop to use facebook and office tasks when you already have a dual core cpu ?

Hardware makers need to do something more to get sales. Give us another reason to buy a new notebook.

I think there was a story some weeks ago suggesting this trend - that people go for a desktop Mac (or PC) along with an iPad; and it's probably a similar solution in price.

I like the sound of that a lot, but I guess it depends on what people need to do on the road. If what you really need is a "mobile desktop", then an iMac & iPad wouldn't suit you.

But that's always been the case. The main driver of windows laptop sales for me has always been the old laptop falling apart or slowing to a crawl due to windows registry rot. My macbook pro is 3 years old and I have no need to replace it since it hasn't fallen to pieces yet.

iPad vs Notebook

If you are not a programmer, I am not sure why you need a notebook. Almost for the same price (not comparing to macbooks) when you can get an iPad and do everything that you do in your daily life, why would you need one?

oh no, please! sales of netbooks go down - and? what does it mean? it doesn't mean that the ipad is the reason. maybe the people who wanted netbooks did in fact buy them and others don't want to! or maybe people realized that netbooks are not as good as they thought?

i am sure that the sales would behave like that even without an ipad. it is just a consequence of the fact that the people who liked netbooks simply have bought them and now there is not so much need anymore.

you could also say that the KINDLE canibalized the netbook sales...

not that a macbook or MBP isn't price competative when compared against PC notebooks, but for most people they think you're on drugs if you spend that much on a laptop these days. no one is going to buy a 15" laptop for $2000.

as for the imac vs PC desktop i'm still split. but i'm leaning more to a PC with better graphics rather than an iMac with a nice monitor

you still need a computer for an ipad

Heh, you don't see MacRumors having duplicate stories at all until this week. ;) Might want to check the front page for dups.

This is sadly true.
But wouldn't it be better if people actually knew how to do more?
Maybe we should not teach anybody any skills and just give them enough to be satisfied with their feeble existence.
Seriously? Stupidity is a form of slavery.

Wow. That's a pretty arrogant statement.

Understanding how to use a proprietary OS is not the mark of a meaningful existence or intelligence. A tool should not have to be figured out. Ideally, it should get out of the way and help us accomplish a task.

So consumers want competitively priced well designed and powerful mobile devices, not cheap underpowered subnotebooks?

What a surprise... Not really.

not cannibalization

Q: er, how is it "cannibalization" (def: eating yer own), if its two totally different product categories?

A: it's not.

put another (best buy) way: can a toaster oven "cannibalize" microwave oven sales? no. theyre different, competing products. for some people a toaster oven is better, for others a microwave is better. and for some people, BOTH are useful.

show of hands -- how many folks have a laptop and a tablet? i do. and they serve different purposes.

Ipad versus Netbook.

Hello,

I must say I am a 90% appleboy (less 10% for the lack of ipad). I have iphone, imac, ipod touch, ipod nano (2x), used to have a ipod mini.

I tried out Ipad at my local store and after toying for more than 10 minutes, then I realized that, it can be pretty stressing if you are not putting in on your lap.

We must all humbly agree that Apple need to brush up on its office application and work productivity like word processing and user-friendless. It is not just iWorks but also Mac Office.

Then I went to get a rather expensive netbook at around 350 USD. The weight is about 1kg with battery, and it can go on for about 9 hrs of wifi + work processing without worry, it claims to go up to 15 hrs. I would not say mine is noisy or slow. If you picked a good one, mine is from MSI U160, it is pretty decent. For example, Amazon e-book is extremely good for reading under the sun (As shown in their commercial) and so netbook is extremely good lecture pal. In contrasts. Ipad is a bit like jack of all trades and very strong in content consumption. In a netbook,You can exchange files and thumbdrives with your friends, do not need to find a wifi to do that. The truth is we do not sit on a couch in a lecture theatre, we have a chair with a small table, and netbook provide just a nice weight to bring around and useful for office productivity on the go, esp term paper.

However, it is a shame that netbooks are going down, and is replaced with ipad. It is just a reflection of trend that computing powers are meant to replace productivity towards entertainment consumption.

I can see how parents and old people might dig a simple setup like the iPad. But really said:
im a software developer in my 30s, and i find value in tablets. why?

a) 10 hour battery life
b) form factor better suited for sofa and toilet and kitchen counter
c) easier to pass around to guests
d) no removal at airport security
e) no fragile parts/hinges

...my laptop cant do any of those things very well.
