Like the flying monkeys in The Wizard Of Oz, in they swoop screaming, "MyWi is stealing, MyWi is stealing!!" to take yet another MyWi thread off on an irrelevant tangent.

Oh, I don't limit it to MyWi, nice try tho....

THIS thread is about MyWi....Nice try tho.... Shouldn't you be out picketing a funeral somewhere?

This thread is about using an app to gain access to a service you did pay for or to pay AT&T service they offer. Ummm no, I don't go to funerals but that's for the suggestion.

So if you sign up for a gym, and decide to take a balance ball home for your (hypothetical) kid to use, it's all right because you got the full membership (which includes the use of said balance ball), right?

You did not BUY data - you've leased it. And your lease says "No tethering".

I'm expecting samcraig to show up any time now. :)

I'm off to see the Wizard of Oz.

I'm off to see the Wizard of Oz.

I will admit though - for those on the limited data plans, I don't see why AT&T has to charge for tethering.

And if I had a need for it, I could see my self using a tethering app occasionally on unlimited data, but some of these people are extreme :/

I'd say me pointing out the fact it's more a lease is about 50-60% "devil's advocate".

AT&T will obviously make you switch plans and then be forced to be on a 2GB plan. No way will At&T let you have free wifi hotspot with unlimited.

At the risk of going back to the original thread for a moment, I think what WiiDSmoker is saying is that if you're already hacking your phone for MyWi, why not just apply the soon to be released hack of enabling native tethering?

Then you could simply use this native iOS feature, while still not paying AT&T for the tethering, and maybe just pay a couple of dollars for the Cydia enabling hack or edit a property list, or something for free? Not that I condone this sort of activity.

Applejuice explained it good enough, maybe because I've had this rant enough times, hence why I didn't say anymore. You pay to have unlimited data on your phone and only your phone. It's no different then the old de-scramblers on cable or having a satellite access card reprogrammed, all of which allowed you to access something you didn't pay for and were/are illegal. The law hasn't kept up with the technology over the years so stealing internet is a legal gray area ATM.

I sleep just fine at night. Thanks for worrying though.

mywi is great but is WELL OVERDUE for a SBSettings toggle. ill prob hack 4.3 to enable the hotspot feature and keep my unlimited but if it uses more battery then mywi at 30% then I prob will keep using mywi.

Exactly what I was trying to say:)

MyWi's value has dropped significantly, but it's not totally pointless... there are some things I use MyWi for. Like this might not sound intuitive, but I use it on airplanes that have wifi. You can tether a wifi signal over usb using mywi. So if i'm on a plane, I buy the internet on my iPhone, which is cheaper, and I plug it into my laptop. This gives me a bunch of benefits...
  • Internet on my phone and computer at the same time
  • iPhone is charging
  • if the computer dies, i'll have a fully charged iphone that still has internet access
I guess that's pretty much the only "redeeming" feature I see left in it. I bet it will get more tweaks and stuff to give a lot more transparency over what the personal hotspot option will. But that being said, yeah in general, most of the value is gone.

I've said it before & I'll say it again: I would pay AT&T one time to use tethering/mobile hotspot. But, I won't be restricted (ie: no iPad tethering) or drop down on my data plan. Otherwise, MyWi still holds value to me. I would like to see them offer the option to go down to 20% broadcast strength. I usually keep my phone close to my other devices.

If you can use something like TetherMe or the CommCenter hack to enable the personal hotspot in 4.3, then MyWi is entirely useless. As far as I can tell, the personal hotspot feature and the iPhone's current internet tethering feature provide everything that MyWi provides, for free, with the exception of a setting to adjust transmission strength, and who really uses that?

/granted, both are not permitted without paying an additional fee under AT&T's current contracts, but that's beside the point.
//Data is data, IMHO.

agreed. data is data. The data is still coming through my phone.

I still can't believe there's no SBSettings toggle! Maybe now that there's some real competition coming in 4.3 the Dev will step up and add this easy but useful feature.

I understand the price difference for a laptop but somehow my iPad is considered a laptop too. That sucks.
Is there any way to use MyWi's new Bluetooth tethering to share a WiFi Internet connection to an iPad?

So far in 4.3 it seems that the hotspot is tied directly with tethering so it's included in that payment so whatever u pay for that is what u pay when 4.3 is released. Anyone who has tethering enabled and updates to 4.3 has the hotspot feature (as of now). So I doubt it will change

I don't feel comfortable with the CommCenter hack. Also, I have found that at 30% strength, MyWi does reach my whole house. My position was compared to the OP. Since he purchased MyWi, he still doesn't have to pay for mobile hotspot privilages each month.

I think the chances of verizon charging for tethering a slim to none. They allow android devices to tether with unlimited plans for no extra cost and android users typically use more data than iPhone customers so why would the charge iPhone users? The ARE trying to steal customers from AT&T so im sure the are going to want to offer the best deals to get that edge. It's smart business. What do they have to lose really?

That makes absolutely no sense and is a terrible comparison. Of course nobody would take the ball home if the had a full membership, thats why they GO TO the gym. If they didn't have a gym membership, they'd buy a ball for home. Now a good comparison is saying we go to an ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT buffet and then being limited to only 2 plates of food.. despite paying for all you can eat? what kind of **** is that.. AT&T can stop screwing the customer over for everything they can and give us what we pay for. Same goes for txting, it uses data you have already paid for yet only works when you pay them MORE $$.
