I kinda agree with the OP. Before you used to find phones like this

but now it seems they are just 'slapping in android' to make it better.

I concur.

Android has come a LONGG ways. Rooting used to be a pain in the neck but now is pretty much a one click thing now. But all rooting does as you know is give you, the owner of your phone access to your root files and makes it possible to do flashing ROMs and .apk files and zips.

It depends on the phone. Clearly, Google not only doesn't care if users root, they probably encourage it since the Nexus One is so easy to root.

However, Motorola and a few other manufacturers have completely locked the bootloaders on their phones, so that there is no longer "true" level 1 root access anymore. Samsung's bootloader can easily be rooted, so I hope that Samsung remains friendly to custom ROMs. I admire how Samsung even made the Galaxy S phones easy to network unlock.

So long story short, you think iOS will have different features on VZW vs. AT&T? I don't see that at all...

No, not what I was saying at all.

I'm saying that Apple may push development of features for the iOS platform independent of waiting for AT&T to "catch up" to them. They can develop whatever they want and let the carriers fight it out over who gets to claim "enablement" of these features first.

Up until now, AT&T really had no motivation to rush to enable a feature of iOS (Tethering is the example I used). They had a captive audience of iPhone owners and people could either wait for them (AT&T) to enable these features delivered via iOS or not. There was no sense of urgency on their part.....its not like customers had a choice or a finger they could point saying "See? Verizon has enabled that, why haven't you?!?!?!"

Now, there's real competition between the carriers. Unlike Android, where each carrier can pick and choose how to bundle the phones and Android OS (even which version of Android OS), they get One phone, One OS and thats it.

This is going to be a GREAT thing for customers as you can compare apples to apples (pun intended). None of this market fragmentation of the OS/platform nonsense you see with Android today.

I still think the iOS and the iPhone are superior in every way.
So, I guess Apple can stop iPhone development now. Cool.

Not to mention one-click jailbreaking is hardly the same as flashing a custom ROM and rooting.
You haven't jailbroke an iPhone lately, have you?

Android is the new DOS. A foundation that all the phone companys build on. You can always root and go back to DOS to make it your own as well. Is it overused? Market share will determine that.

the true problem is that there are now TOO MANY PHONES. have a couple low ends, a few midrange, and a couple high end devices. why have a million of each level?

Here's what would be fascinating to see happen.

Everyone is talking about how many AT&T "defectors" jump to Verizon for that version of the iPhone, just because of carrier preferences.

While I'm sure that the defection numbers will be impressive, what I'd REALLY like to learn is how many Android users abandon ship in favor of the Verizon iPhone. I guess there's no way to know that number until/unless someone compiles it, but I know an awful lot of people chose Android because they had no other choice, not because it was their preferred phone.

The truth is that the iphone is a great do it all phone, kind of because it doesn't do everything. The problem is that its boring very very boring. You only get one choice, the screen is small, the alerts are annoying, the icons are dated, and whoever thought putting tiny icons into a tiny folder making really tiny icons was a good idea should be shot. I love my mac, and I love the ipad. The iphone is just a toy that makes calls. It needs a major overhaul, and flash is not going anywhere so get with the program Steve. Right now Android is the best phone OS.

Probably not as many as you think. AT&T is only BAD in a few cities.

Verizon in #1 with subscribers, but the vast majority of people who have Verizon that I know personally are people who get their phones through their jobs (blackberry users, for the most part). Most companies will not pay for iphones for their employees. That will hurt uptake.

I would *guess* that only half of my friends are willing to pay the +$20 premium per month that it costs to have service on Verizon, so there won't be many (if any) defections from T-mobile or Sprint. Probably not ANY from sprint since you will (in theory) be able to take an iphone off of Verizon and use it for Sprint.

This will probably put iPhone growth much closer to Android growth, but I still don't see iPhone keeping up over the long haul. Android still has more features, has more models of phone, is on more carriers and is available at more price points.

Some people just don't like the way Apple does things. Thats the truth. Its not for nothing that Mac is in 2nd place to PCs.

I love my samsung epic 4g with android OS, I can tether for free, as well as have an actual "Unlimited" data plan unlike AT&T's crap data service.

Well, I have an iPhone 4 on AT&T, I have unlimited data and create a WiFi hotspot on my phone to tether for free.

How is yours better?

You know, the Android OS is better than the iOS because it's on more platforms.

That logic is totally wrong, but I wont even bother to explain why :(

And in response to the OP, Android is overrated and overused

In what respect is it overrated? Unorignal boxes? ;)

OP: Why are you complaining about android overuse on an iphone forum?

Because many apple fanboys need to take pot shots at the competition to justify their purchases as still being relevant and/or cool

Android is not over used, it is on more devices and the competition of android is forcing apple not to sit on their laurels.

the iOS/iPhone platform does some things better then android based phones and some android based phones do some things better then then the iOS/iPhone platform.

People are buying android machines not because they're geeks, or because they're locked into a given carrier even though they secretly want an iPhone. They buy android based phones because it suits their needs. It doesn't make the iPhone any less of a phone, because someone opted for a droid over an iPhone.

Will the iPhone be wildly successful on VZW, yes I have little doubt. Will android still sell very well on VZW once the iPhone is available yes, because one size does not fit all.

It's like complaining all the computer manufacturers using Windows and saying Windows is overused... Some companies are better at making software and others better at hardware. Apple is special in that it does both, but even then, Apple uses many third party chips/hardware.

how much data do you even use?
I use ATT (though not with an iPhone anymore), and I've always had unlimited and I've never had a problem with it not being an "actual" unlimited plan.

Yes, unoriginal box design from the competition is overrated :)

While I think Android is good for the phone market (healthy competition, etc. I use an HTC HD2 with Android), the fact that manufacturers are slapping Android on everything is a hair annoying. For average customers it is hard to distinguish between "Droid" and "Android". I have been told, on numerous occasions, "No, I don't have an Android, I have a Droid." Average customers don't know what Android is, much like they don't know if their computer has Vista or 7.

But oh well, right? Well this creates another problem, updates. Vendors are pumping devices out so quickly that they really have no incentive to continuing supporting software after a year. Heck, my Milestone (GSM Droid) didn't even get an official 2.2 like was promised! The box advertised FLASH READY but didn't even get the update to support it! What the heck?

Thats bad business. Thats bad for consumers. Then we have these circlejerk Android fanboys talking about "ZOMG WE OUTSOLD IOS!!!" Well duh, Android is on every carrier in the world on hundreds of devices being given away with new contracts or "buy 1 get up to 5 free" deals. Surprise surprise its winning, they're simply saturating the market with crap smartphones that won't be updated. Is that really a "smart"phone then?

I loved my HTC Aria, it was a nice small size and had great battery. Problem? No updates. No hope for updates. So after a year, when new apps require new Android API's, what do I do? Root? Custom roms? For your average customer? Yeah... right...

Again, I use an Android phone, but I'm not a fandroid, I see the problems.

a Droid is an Android. Droid is just a brand Motorola uses for their android device. So I see nothing wrong with ppl calling a ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile android phone a droid because that's what they are. They all do the same thing minus a few features on some phones.

Anyways I gave up my Iphone 4 because the antenna issue and got a Evo 4G. I've been happy with it but when I heard about Verizon getting the new Iphone 4 it made me wonder if I should switch over and get the Iphone again. I don't think I can do it though because I love my big screen and all the cool google apps and features. Hope Apple increase screen size and have some new exciting apps on the new Iphone 5 that can sway me from Android.

Cell Phone company: "Lets make a phone to beat the iPhone, suggestions?"
Suggestion: "Lets slap Android in it!"
Result..... a hundred lame ass phones with maybe 2 exceptions.

I'm getting really tired of the unimaginative bullcrap that all these cell phone makers keep dishing out thinking it'll sell just because it has android in it.

I'll tell you what's lame, the lack of choice with the Iphone. One size doesn't fit all thank god for Android and the wide range of devices supporting it.

You haven't jailbroke an iPhone lately, have you?

Um, yeah, I have. Limera1n is basically an idiot-proof process involving the clicking of a single button, well, two if you count the power.

How is this anywhere near the process of rooting many phones that have locked bootloaders? You haven't rooted and custom installed an Android ROM lately, have you?

i did, and i was the first one to write a custom tutorial to do so for mac on and android forum@@@#@#@

What do you propose? Maybe they can just jam out an iOS competitor in a caffeine-fueled late-night coding session? Android is the best tool a lot of these guys have to compete against the iPhone, and it also happens to the the tool that has allowed some of these folks to play in the smartphone big leagues. Now, the numbers don't support this as a long term decision, but it is certainly something they can work with while they take advantage of the current market or build something which they'll be able to use to play big in the future (Nokia, I'm thinking of you).

And really. Android sure is better than the half-assed things most of these guys were throwing on their phones before the iPhone changed the game...

That's one reason why people opt for android. They don't go into verizon or t-mobile asking for android as much as asking for a phone that suits their needs. Some want a physical keyboard, others want a large display, etc. They get a phone that they want.

What's it to you? They're not forcing you to buy the unimaginative bullcrap and as long as Apple keep making their phone, I'm sure you'll still buy them.

Android is a great platform and clearly Apple has to step their game up even more now that they have legit competition. This is good for all Apple fans :D
