Cell Phone company: "Lets make a phone to beat the iPhone, suggestions?"
Suggestion: "Lets slap Android in it!"
Result..... a hundred lame ass phones with maybe 2 exceptions.

I'm getting really tired of the unimaginative bullcrap that all these cell phone makers keep dishing out thinking it'll sell just because it has android in it.

And your point is?

That's one reason why people opt for android. They don't go into verizon or t-mobile asking for android as much as asking for a phone that suits their needs. Some want a physical keyboard, others want a large display, etc. They get a phone that they want.

I seriously doubt 1 in 100 people bought an Android phone because it "met their needs." I'm betting the overwhelming majority bought it for one reason:

It was the closest thing to an iPhone they could buy.

You are obviously not reading what I'm saying, and dont understand what I want. I want whats better for the customers because I'm tired of all these useless excuses for phones. You can't just shove Android OS in a phone and say its a good phone. You have to model the phone to the OS. I want them to limit the use of OS because you can't expect every Android phone to be amazing or useful. So why just let everyone use it. I don't want the market to be a monopoly and I love variety.

Regardless of what OS is on it they'll still market it as a "Good Phone". When was a phone ever marketed as a "Bad Phone". Android is a great OS and by putting it on inferior hardware you can't say it's a great phone, I get that. But at the end of the day Google wants $$$ regardless if they're OS is on a POS phone. Yay moneyz!

Inferior hardware? Should it be surrounded by glass that shatters when it falls 12" from the ground? Sure would be a pain to replace my battery(thats right, i can do that) with all that glass and stuff.

I put a case on mine anyways regardless of what kind of back it has on it because they are always slippery.

I find those comments in here about hardware funny. Like the iPhone is built like Fort Knox or something. Best built iPhone is the 2G.

Exactly, the Android platform is for geeks, Blackberry is for business, and iOS is for everyone else. (Windows and Palm doesn't count since I don't know anyone who uses it nor do I think you guys can say one person who uses either of those.) The only reason Android took off is that the iPhone was not available for a lot of people. I bet in 2013/2014 when someone mentions Android, most will say, "What?".

 Did you really just say that?

Seems all the "Geeks" werent happy when they didnt have MMS or copy and paste and whined for two years til they got it.

The geeks use what phones? Seems the Android does everything and a little bit more than the iPhone. Think before you post. I believe all the smartphones have something for everybody. Apple is however for fanboys.

Exactly, the Android platform is for geeks,

So you're making it sound like intelligent people who know and like technology are picking android as a bad thing. So if geeks are buying android phones, then there's a lot of them because android is outselling the iPhone.

Plus by stating that the android platform is for geeks, what does that make iOS for? I mean the intelligent people are opting for android by your assessment, so only dumb people are going for the iPhone.

see your closed minded generalized statement makes little sense. Why not just admit that people are choosing phones that they want or like and some of those choices are for android.

Amazing answer. Applause...

No, no, no. The iPhone is obviously geared towards San Francisco Web Developers and web 2.0 startup founders. Android is geared toward the typical Windows user. Windows Phone 7 is geared towards nobody. And Blackberry is geared toward the 55+ CEO type. Its science.

That's like saying computer manufacturers say lets beat the Macs. Suggestion: Lets slap Windows on it! Result.... a billion affordable computers sold.

Tech people know what they are looking for in a phone. The average person only uses their phone for voice, snap some pictures and maybe text. So what you or I may consider lame, it could exceed what someone else is looking for.

Windows Phone 7 is geared towards nobody.
Really? How much time have you spent using WP7? I'll guess somewhere between never and glancing at it in a phone store.
I happen to have a Samsung Focus with WP7 and it's geared towards people who want their info quickly.
The Metro interface is smooth and efficient and it has all the same apps available for it that I have on my iPhone.
The FB app on WP7 simply blows the iPhone FB app out of the water.

It lacks a few features like copy and paste (coming in Feb), but I lived without it for years on my iPhone, so I'll deal with it for another few weeks.

Yeah and win vista is also so much better than OS X, right. I think microsoft can only make bad prodicts they dont have enough imagination?

First, spell check... try it. Proper punctuation would be nice too.
Second, who was talking about Vista? Nobody.
We all know Vista was a buggy pile of dung when it was released.

This made me laugh.
You do realize that many Android based phones cost the same, if not more, than an iPhone 4.

This is generally only true for their respective launches. Unlike the iPhones, which stay the same price for the entire life of the phone until the next refresh, you can pretty much be guaranteed that you can pick up last month's Android at a pretty heavily subsidized price (or buy one get one).

Yep... that's why Android has the market share it does.
iPhones do drop in price over time too. $49 3GS rings a bell.

Cute...

I own a WP7 phone. Still waiting to see these bugs everyone is talking about.
Missing features =/= bugs.

I don't know what bugs wp7 has but i think it needs to become more solid in a big way i.e minimun hardware requirements for manufactores and more apps (i know it's a new platform but still) until that it can't equal the iphone.

I like the customization possibilities you can get, because the homescreen launcher is so easily replaceable.

Although it can be done poorly (early MotoBlur comes to mind, and so do some Android tablets), it can also be done well (HTC Sense).

The new Disney-branded Sharp phone for Japan is an example of how a specialty phone can now be created more easily. (It's a 1GHz phone with a glasses-free 3.8" WVGA _3D_ screen.) YouTube Video here.

Not for everyone, obviously, but cool for Disney fans.

MS has already published min hardware reqs.
Apps are coming...

I do agree, it is still a 1.0 release and has plenty of room for improvement.
Is it bug free... no. But to say it's buggy... not really.
Every phone has it's bugs, including the iPhone.

The problem is not Android itself. The problem is that Manufacturers keep adding their own launchers and costomizing it so much that Android phones from different manufacturers end up looking like they are running a different OS.

Also there is the well documented problem of fragmentation with all the different hardware specs.

I'd observe that they're more interested in the people who have purchased these devices than they are in the dismay of someone who thinks this is silly. Android has sold well and it provided many companies with a (hopefully for their sake—they should be ensuring portfolio diversity in the long run) short term recourse against the iPhone.

And many of those 'unimaginative bullcrap' devices happen to be what some customers want. Not everyone wants the likes of the iPhone or HTC Evo with their expensive dataplans and high up-front costs. These companies would like to sell something to these people.
