Android has more carriers and more types of devices (Samsung, LG, Moto, etc...) to offer. I should certainly hope that with that many phones and carriers they would pull ahead. It would have been pathetic otherwise. If Apple was on more carriers with more devices the stats would probably not yet be in Androids favor. :p

While Android is available on more cell phones then iOS, I think iPhone is still out selling any one model of Android phone. Its really tit for tat.

I think this is pretty good news TBH. It's good that we're seeing such healthy competition. It'll encourage Apple to work harder, and Google to keep expanding the line.

As long as we get to see Steve Balmer getting all red and angry because he has no market share I don't care :p

you guys are still in denial.

the fact is...most people dont want an iphone. the reports says it and the sales numbers proves it. its not about the limit availability of the iphone or contract issues...its just doesn't appeal to most people.

I'm not a fanboy but do own a 3GS.

Your term "want"...I think that can be described a few ways:

1)people do want the iPhone (or a smartphone), but are unwilling to shell out $199 PLUS a 2 year contract ($65+) PLUS be forced on a carrier they dislike.

2)people who do not want an iPhone (or smartphone) simply because they have absolutely no need for anything other than dialing a phone #...bazillions of options for free phones and short or no contracts.

Heck, my mom has one of those $19 phones that she buys a $20 prepaid card every 90 days. She rarely uses it and it's quite inexpensive compared to $100+ phones and $50+ monthly bills.

I totally disagree with your statement about the contracts and availability... I agree that those points are somewhat part of the equation when not choosing an iPhone...but those points are clearly not the ONLY reasons.

And what does that prove? It's Apple's strategy to have a single iOS phone model. If there was a single Android phone it might be doing just as well as iPhone. However, if Apple were to release, say, 20 iPhone models do you really thing they would sell 20 times more iPhones. They would not. And as far as threats are concerned, did you notice that iPhone market share actually declined? Is it not a threat?

Actually no...if google stuck with the nexus they will not be in business right now other then there online services. And apple is...to my knowledge , still selling 3GS at 49 bucks rather fast..how big was the line for ur evo again?

I wonder how many people who answered the poll knew about Android fragmentation, the fact that phone manufacturers and cellular providers withhold updates to gouge you on your next phone, the generally sluggishness of the OS, the fact that Android is just a way for Google to sell you ads, etc etc.

Seriously, I wish Windows Phone 7 was released before Android. Much better OS that isn't a scam.

in every other country the stats say otherwise.

In the UK (where iphone share has fallen amongst the highest) the iPhone has been all all 5 carriers for over a year.

Btw

To those claiming that iPhone 4 is still the best phone in the World... Think twice. Just check the techradar.com - an influential UK-based site (a real tech site I might add, unlike the likes of Engadget, Gizmodo etc.). In their "20 best mobile phones" ranking, iPhone now slipped to the 4-th place after these phones:

1. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
2. HTC Desire S
3. HTC Desire

And in a week, after Samsung Galaxy S2 is released, iPhone will inevitably slip even further.

Can somebody answer me this please?

Why does it matter which brand OS is "better" then other and why do you care defending your "idol"?

Seriously. Shouldn't you all bomb the hell out of your "weapon of choice" manufacturer with ideas, complaints or simple opinions? That would make a change of some significance. Damn my iPhone 4 uses same damn OS as the one i bought in 2007 standing in that line the day it was released! WTF!

Most of you here want an iPhone 5. WTF for if iP4 is already a overkill since iOS is so damn old and lacks a ton of features available on android for a while. Im lucky to have HTC phone as well and only thing that might keep me in apples camp is feature packed iOS. IP5 can do BJ's for lunch and wont mean crap if they don't give it a system worth using. And they better make it work with iP4 or that's another bye bye from me. I buy a phone for a specific reason. Buying a new one every year is not one of them.

I think Apple should have teamed up with Nokia. Let Nokia put IOS on their phones. IOS doesn't make Apple money its all in the app store. Apple unfortunately only has 1 phone and there are dozens of others flooding the markets its no wonder Android is ahead.

I believe Apple needs to team up with another phone maker to become more dominant.

Apple needs to allow other music

I do not like itunes and may not buy an Apple iphone or ipad because of itunes. I do not like having to have 2 music systems. Windows Media Player on my home computer and itunes on my phone. Why can't Apple allow other music applications? I believe this is a big buying factor.

Where exactly are these ads then? Cant see any on my phone...are they anything like iAds?

I have no clue how to respond to this tripe.

The last time someone was this wrong, he was waving a piece of paper and calling it 'peace in our time'

Well, you can dispute the facts all you want to, son. However, until you offer a single cogent counter-argument, you're just another troll with nothing to say.

I really hope that Apple sees trends like this and realizes it's time to change their game plan. No more once a year phones. Time to kick the innovation level up a few notches. Time for over the air OS updates, over the air app installs, wireless syncing and everything else Android has offered for some time now.

So time to have crap store, impossible updates, crashing app as default behavior! All android users i know even don't have internet connection and don't use apps, they just wanted a touch phone. Android is anyway pretty good, but saying Apple is going bad.... who cares if iOS has 1% or 90%? I just use it for work, for fun and it is awesome.

WP7 at 10%!?!

I think the big story is that Windows Phone 7/Windows mobile has a 10% share! I pegged them at like a 2% tops.

whatever you say.....

see you back here in a years time.;)

I don't think its necessary to make several new iphones within a year. Often iOS updates will get bug fixes, new features. Where Android is lacking in software updates unless you buy a new phone.

Not trying to argue, but i'm not sure what your point is. These 5 carriers have many android choices, is that correct? I guess the point of my post was: Apple is clearly outnumbered by android devices, so it's only natural Apple would fall 'behind'. Anything less would be embarrassing for Android;

Still, you got nothing? ok, c-ya troll.

It's actually quite easy to explain these numbers... only about 24% of the populace has an above average IQ - SOURCE. Everyone else is a fandroid!

Yeah, I know it's unsubstantiated hyperbole, but there is already so much of that in this thread, what's a little more?

It's strange that Android is so popular, I have not seen many people use it so far. I have tried one Android device a few months ago and it was not nearly as responsive, logical, and functional as iOS at all. I mean it wasn't just a matter of subjective preference, that thing was really horrible!

But I imagine Android runs differently on different handsets, and the bigger choice allows for lower price points, so more people buy it. Also, Android is an open-source OS which can be used on anything, while iOS only comes on the limited kinds of devices that Apple makes, which explains why Android is so popular.

I recently chaperoned a class trip with my high school students. A bunch of them had iPhones. A few of them had Android phones. The kids with Android phones, one of whom is quite a techie and an Apple "hater," told me that his phone (don't remember the model) sucks power like nobody's business and regularly crashes for no particular reason. So my sense from this admittedly very limited sample is that the Android experience isn't yet nearly as polished as the iOS experience.

Flash + unlocked = win

Why I went to Android?

Flash.

And it's unlocked, so when I travel I can just pop in a local SIM and it works. Without hacking or jailbreaking. I can also tether out of the box and VOIP capability is built into the OS.

Did I say Flash? It works perfectly. And it is so liberating, compared to my iPad.

P.S. My Nexus S is comparable to my old 3GS in terms of battery life, but it has a larger and much brighter screen. I use MUIU, so it looks just like the iPhone, except I also have a couple of widgets (contacts. etc.).

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone design. But I need Flash, a larger screen and out of the box unlock.
