Where do these survey companies get there data from? I have NEVER been asked any questions about stuff like this. Plus with statistics you can fudge the numbers to represent just about anything.

a poll is not calling every single owner of a device .... the problem is more in what they use a base of the poll, what they compare in there, ... etc (see my earlier post)

Something I noticed

I could be way off, but its just an interesting perspective.

I feel Apple is after revolutionary innovation. It's awesome, but not everyone adopts it right away. The iPhone has only 1-2 active handsets on only 2 carriers.

I feel Android is after Nokia type users. A better operating system than Nokia, with the same business plan of a plethora of simple, cheaper, shorter-life span handsets on every carrier.

Nokia had a pretty huge chunk of the pie, and it might be only logical that the company with a more Nokia-style business approach might get a lot of those users, at least on the first purchase.

As Verizon settles in as an Apple carrier, I think Apple still stands to gain in 2011-2012 as iphone 5 and iOS 5 and Lion all get released.

Maybe thats the delay with the new phone and cloud-based technology roll-outs. They'd rather be a bit late, super effective and totally vertically integrated, than not getting it right in 2011.

Just a thought.

You say this and yet we still have lines...waiting...reserves....craaaaaazzzzzyyyy lines...when have u seen a line that goes around blocks for an android....when? Yet it's stale? Come on use sense...android is the cheapest thing out there...my toaster runs on android for crying out loud...android is welfare.....iOS is premium stuff...

I understand where all the hatred towards mac users comes from... you make us all look bad.

If you look at the top selling smartphones for the last 5 years, 4 of them are iPhones, probably 4 or 5 more are Blackberries and at best there are 2 but probably 1 android device.
So, because RIM has as many top selling smart phones the last five years as Apple they aren't in trouble right now?

Please someone explain to me how because there are 250 android phones that each sell 50k units each android is somehow the superior experience, device or platform.

No Android device has come close to selling as many units as any iPhone model.

Some people don't seem to realize Android is an operating system & not a phone.

If you want to compare Android to something, it should be to iOS. If you want to compare the iphone to something it should be a nexus one, for example.

Hmm... Apple makes money off the hardware and the apps. Google doesn't sell hardware... they also don't take a percentage from devs either so they don't make money from apps...

Who is laughing all the way to the bank?

Wow. Good job android. Now take away all your 50 some phones execpt 2 from the poll, then set your company's progress back 4 years and make it so that your software is only avaiable to two carriers. Then let's see who has the largest usage. Really!? That's how much they would have to downsize to be equal. This poll means nothing whatsoever. This acrticle should be headed more like "Apple holds an amazing 27% of smartphone usage with only two phones!"

I've always figured that eventually Android would take over. How many active units do they have out in the wild compared to the iPhone? And I'm not talking raw numbers, I'm referring to different manufacturers and models. Clearly Android has to have like 20+ devices out there compared to 2 from Apple (iPhone and Touch). I think iOS is still doing impressively well...

The iPhone is doing amazingly well. Android will have the majority market share by sheer number of devices available, just like Windows does vs OSX.

You'll care when the majority of developers will jump to Android because it has more users.

Developers will not follow user numbers per se, but rather those users who are willing to pay and so far, Apple has that demographic in their pocket. Likewise, development and support costs (from what I've read) are higher for developers on Android because of fragmentation. Sheer numbers of users will not matter as much as you think. And if you disagree, go argue with John Carmack. He is still of the opinion that Android isn't worth the effort yet.

Why do you think most people still use Windows? Because it has more software. Once you get behind, it's tough to keep up.

That sounds like a pro-iOS argument to me. You sure that's the reason you want to cite in favor of Android?

Yes, lots more money to be made for developing apps for iOS. Just read in 9 to 5 mac:

"Developer interest in iOS grows even as market for Android smartphones expands"

This is not reality however. Google chose the Windows model and Apple did what is always does and chose to go it alone with proprietary hardware and software. We are not comparing handset to handset, but OS to OS. Each strategy has its strengths and weaknesses. Apple's strength is it's integration with iTunes (or weakness if you don't like iTunes) and the fact that it makes a great iPod for use with music and media. Apple's weakness is that it is locked down to one company and one device so market share will suffer. Android doesn't offer integration on the same level as the iPhone, but as a stand alone device it performs well. The advantage of Android is that many different companies can offer it much like the Windows model and it will continue to gain market share.

If this story were about comparing handset to handset then yes the iPhone wins hands down, but we are comparing OS to OS and in that area Android is by far the current market share leader. In the end it doesn't matter. Use what you want to use.

This story really skews the facts. It's not like Apple didn't just announce another blowout quarter and that the iPhone is half of its revenue. I don't see where Apple is getting pinched here.

Also as far as one OS having a bigger market share than the other, BMW's marketshare is tiny compared to GM's combined marketshare, however, BMW makes a better and more desirable car. Marketshare isn't everything.

People still wait with baited breath to see what the next iPhone will be like and then line up for hours upon hours to get one. The next Android of the Month phone, not so much.

One interesting thing to note. Apple held 25% of recent acquirers with 2 phone models. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. They are also on only 2 carriers, and have only been with Verizon for part of the time leading up to the march survey. Android however is on dozens of handsets and all four US carriers. I would say apple is doing amazingly well when you consider those specifics.

I am not worried about iOS not having a larger chunk of the market, I am blown away that it has 25%.

Someone always makes this argument, but the fact is that if you think the wide variety of Android phones is actually beneficial to Android adoption, then it's Apple's own fault for not doing the same, and for not having T-Mobile and Sprint handsets.

It's true that Apple is doing pretty well considering the circumstances, but the circumstances are of their own making.

I'm currently an Android (on verizon) and I'll probably switch to the iPhone when my contract is up. Android is a good OS. Not as polished or consistent, but there are some things it does very well. Personally, I just hope by the time I switch Apple will have made their notification UI as good as the Android one. I mean, pop ups? Really Apple?

It was only a matter of time.

True.

Now that Apple is adrift in the uncertainty of headlines about versions 5 &6, it's a great time to switch to Android.

This will allow Apple time to get organized, sort out antenna issues, or non issues, and see if they can build a really great phone that lives up to its sales numbers.

All the while there are several great Androids to choose from. And to keep you feeling safe, they'll track you just like an iPhone. Couldn't be better :)

I really hope that Apple sees trends like this and realizes it's time to change their game plan. No more once a year phones. Time to kick the innovation level up a few notches. Time for over the air OS updates, over the air app installs, wireless syncing and everything else Android has offered for some time now.

Eh. I somehow don't think those are the reasons why people are buying Android phones. Might have more to do with the fact that there are hundreds of models of Android phones from free to $250 on EVERY carrier, down to Cricket and Pay As You Go companies likes Boost or Virgin Mobile. There are things to like about Android as well over IOS and vice versa. I'm BORED with the look of IOS. Customization is a nice feature (more than wallpaper.)

Apple has 1 model of a phone at a time. It's the one sized fits all mentality of Apple that will cut market share, not over the air updates. (that are always a pain in the butt, and why do you need app installs over the air? Don't they already do that?)

I agree with once a year updates, but more in that they need 2 or 3 different models with each updating throughout the year. There are people who will never give up a physical keyboard. A slider iPhone would be a nice addition. YES STEVE... a slide out keyboard. Tens of millions of those are sold.... maybe billions in a year.

I certainly don't care which platform has more users. Windows has more users than OSX for gods sake. As long as Apple continues to make the best hardware and software out there I'll be buying Apple.

someone WILL be able to undercut them eventually, as their prices aren't low (A subsidized Xoom is much, much cheaper than an iPad 3G).

You're assuming people will choose to buy tablets like they buy smartphones: with an attached contract for data service. I don't believe this will be the case, nor do I believe Apple's competitors will be able to undercut Apple on price without cutting their margins to zero or less. Though I would not be surprised to see Microsoft attempt to break into the new tablet market by subsidizing big losses by its hardware partners.

I honestly do not think its too late for Apple to start selling OS X on PCs.

Apple does sell OS X on PCs. They're called Macs.

Will Apple license OS X to the commodity PC makers of the world (Dell, HP, etc.)? Never gonna happen.

This is hilarious . What business school teaches it's graduates that something is WRONG when you capture 1/2 of ALL profits in the chosen industry.
