It’s sloppy development, that’s exactly what it is. We all understand mistakes happen, Apple has made their fair share, but I feel so many things are so preventable and software engineers are not putting out quality OS. In today’s day and age of your security being more crucial than anything in terms if being on a smart phone, software needs to be intricately tested/inspected before it’s released. Not a good look for Android, again.

Worse exploit. Limited deployment, unless you want to speculate every website was suspect. Reset by reboot.

The iPhone exploit had limited deployment according to who? Nobody knows except Google and they're not disclosing which sites or how many. And limited compared to what? There are no numbers on this Android exploit either.

Because the security exploits found in Android seem to be constant, unlike Apple. I’m not saying Apple is perfect, but in comparison to Android, iOS is a safer platform.

"Seem to be" seems like a thin evidence to hang one's security beliefs and trust on.

The amount of people quick to **** on Android is absolutely ridiculous. Ya'll really need to chill with that ****. Yes, it's a major security flaw.

The article also states that Google already pushed out an update to patch the issue. As for other manufacturers putting out a fix, we already know carriers play a role in how fast can get patch updates for Android.

I'm a long time iOS user, was on a Pixel 2 for a year and a half. You know why? Because it's a great phone. And Android is a fantastic platform that can do A LOT of things better than iOS can. At least with an Android, you don't feel like you're using a device in a way the manufacturer wants you to, which is my biggest criticism of iOS as both a user and a UX Designer.

This crapping all over Android is absolutely ridiculous, especially in the forums on this site. Competition is good for both iOS and Android users. And Android does offer a ton of that. It makes both platforms better and gives users more choice. Don't sit here and try to act like you're above people that choose a platform that isn't the one you chose. Because it doesn't satisfy your needs doesn't mean it fails for someone else. You don't know their workflows, use cases, etc.

The fanboyism from both sides is bizarre. I guess people possibly think a massive corporation cares about them and not just how much money they can milk them for.

Just get it patched ASAP. That's the only thing important.

The biggest problem of Android platform is not the vulnerabilities but you must rely on your phone manufacturer to release the patch, and some are not so fast to response.

Another day, another major Android OS security flaw. But thats not even the real problem. The real issue is that most android phones wont get the proper updates to fix it, leaving millions permanently vulnerable.

This seems to be the ultimate, unfixable weakness of the Android OS.

I don’t know why every Android phone isn’t forced to update to a current version (maybe two or three builds back), and why the hardware isn’t manufactured to work until a known Android OS update—after which it is clear to the user that they are using an unsafe device (preferably 3-4 years out).

Why is any manufacturer allowed to manipulate fundamental pieces of Android OS code? Can’t whatever goofy skins or manufacturer-related functionality be laid on top of a locked down OS architecture?

(These are questions from a layperson, obviously, but I’m still curious... How is it acceptable that the Android OS seems to be not secured for probably 1/3 of the worlds smartphone users, or more?)

Not nearly as bad as iCloud celebrity breach where the damage is done for life since there's no way to remove nude pics from internet.

Have Macrumor comments always been so bitchy. It seems like 10 years ago, people used to just comment about the problem, and be pleased there is a fix. Now, it seems like everyone feels entitled to complain.

Yes, the bug sucks. Yes, it's a crappy exploit. But, technology is imperfect. Am I an apple fan, yes. But, do I want Android phones getting hacked, no. As someone else mentioned earlier, Android has an imperfect system. There are way too many phone companies producing phones with Android, and Google can't control all the devices that are out there. Hopefully, Google will eventually figure something out, but until then...

Only 65 comments so far, 🤔. I guess it’s not that important, or is it not that surprising? In my eyes the only reason android should exist at this point is for budget purposes. Anyone spending more then $500 on an Android is fool in my humble opinion.

Still posting this BS?

For the umpteenth time: iCloud wasn’t hacked. Users were phished for their IDs.

This has been explained to you in detail before, so why are you repeating debunked lies?

How quickly people forget Apple's security flaws. As one person who uses both iOS and Android, I can say both have they're flaws. No OS is perfect than the other due to both having bugs and security lapses. People have opinions of who's better for whatever reason. As long as it's coded by humans there will always be flaws. You're only as strong as your weakest link.

Logical fallacy - false equivalence. Because both have bugs they are equal. Not true.

But....even IF iOS and Android had the same number of flaws, iOS still wins. Hands down. This is because half the fight to stay secure is fixing bugs after they’re found and updating user devices with those fixes. In this regard iOS is light years ahead of Android.

I wish android (and every other device) had to meet some standard before it was ever released, but I don’t think the issue is or ever was sloppy development (I’m sure Google’s developers are just as good as Apple’s).
No, I think the issue is largely down to a lack of critical thought in decisions made to get to market and grow the user base.
A similar lack of critical thought is displayed by those who purchase.

You could ask 1000 ordinary Android users if they ever considered whether a device would be safe, secure and private and remain so for years. You’d get 1000 people say that they didn’t consider it.

I have no Google Apps partly for this reason. I don’t trust anything they do from a privacy perspective. It’s how they make money.

Nothing wrong with it... just not for me

If this same type of security gaffe had happened to Apple, this thread would already be 10,000 posts long.

I love my iPhone.

yeah, since the iOS never has any security issues lol

Apple issued three emergency patches this year alone.

nah, people couldn't care less about security issues on their phones. Apple had three massive security issues this year. The last emergency patch for iOS was released 21 days ago.

People quickly forget how Apple let anyone secretly access your FaceTime camera feed and sat on the information for weeks before bothering to admit it.

Also how Apple itself was recording users and sending them to third parties without permission as recently as last month.

If the user has to grant permission for the app to access the camera, why were so many people complaining? Did they forget they granted access?
Most people probably just clicked accept either without thinking or because they want to upload pics of their cats/dogs/tarantulas etc. Just like most people accept all cookies without thinking.

Do you not get fatigued with your posts?
