Not really, cause it only syncs unprotected music. So anything you buy from iTunes you have to burn to disc then rip it again which causes a loss in bass levels.

Most music from iTunes has been unprotected for a while.

Huh? Android = Linux? On which alternate universe is that true?

The OS was a modification of the Linux kernel, Although not entirely a linux system. Referring to it as linux is not completely wrong. Maemo on the new Nokia n900 shares these similarities.

However this is a good find for those that aren't super picky on that whole subject. :p (Let's not get into an argument on lossless files please :D)

The music on iTunes has been DRM free since last April.

And in terms of everyone using the term "Open Source" and that this is a win for "Open Source" (and even the term "Open" in general).... I've said this before elsewhere but it still holds true,

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Indeed.

Also interesting is the fact that you may not be able to upgrade your "Open Source" phone to the latest version of your "Open Source" OS in the near future, if ever. That's not what I understood the Open Source Way to be. People rage against Apple for hardware obsolescence regarding the OS, but in the meantime you have a buttload of different Android handsets all stuck at different OS versions - at the complete mercy of the carrier and/or handset manufacturer to provide an update to the latest version.

And as we have seen so far, there seems to be little motivation to provide it...

Happy to see a win for open source. :)

I dont think Open source is the main winner here; yes, its great for app developers, but the main win is the availability of android phones itself on almost every mobile carrier. If the iPhone where available for the same amount of mobile carriers that android has, I would think the numbers would favor iPhone than android.

Verizon network doesn't allow you to talk on the phone while you surf the Internet

I wonder if this is the important reason Apple does not work with Verizon.

NEWSFLASH: giving away phones for free increases volume and market share.

For the usual suspects who squirm against this argument, Engadget has the same opinion:

LOL! Yet another person snowed by the "Google gives me Android for free because they love me" chestnut.

Enjoy having all your personal data become part of the Google sledgehammer.

No, that would be the HTC Droid AMAZING (coming sometime soon to a carrier near you), followed by the Motorola Droid TOTALLY AWESOME and the Samsung Droid WAY TOO FREAKING INTENSE.

Android OS/Hardware is superior(In features and specs), deal with it. Droid marketing is almost as good as iphones marketing, deal with it. The competition between both platforms is good for progression, deal with it.

Iphone is still for the elite, Android will be for the Elite and the Masses... Iphone will be akin to BMW... Android will be Akin to Toyota/Lexus. both historically good brands... both popular.

Outsold? dont think so

Perhaps the sales have increased on android and sales have slowed on Iphone because a new Iphone is about to come out soon and people are holding off on the purchase, this happens every time a new Iphone is about to come out. I remember last year the big news was the Iphone was being outsold and when the new Iphone came out sales exploded and took over the market once again. So I say let Android sell good now because when the Iphone 4 comes out they will sell more of them in one weekend then there are Android phones in peoples pockets. And new sales records will be recorded.

Or, everybody that is buying a Android device right now looked at what will come with iPhone 4..... and decided to go Android :)

Well this article should rile up the natives. :)

This could be looked at in a few ways. One, iPhone sales are down since people are anticipating a new summer release. Or, Android could actually be more popular right now. Or, the Android platform being on multiple carriers, coupled with HTC's wonderful hardware, helps drive sales, whereas the iPhone is only available on one much maligned network that people are complaining about daily.

recently got HTC Incredible

I've had an iPod Touch for a year and recently got the HTC Incredible (Verizon had a special which included a free Motorola Droid). iPhone OS is MUCH more polished, however I am pretty impressed with the HTC Sense UI. I think that'll be a plus in that Apple will have to continue to refine their product with this emerging Android competition

The music on iTunes has been DRM free since last April.

Only if you had paid to unlock songs that you have previously purchased. I've been on iTunes since 2001 so needless to say I have a ton of music. And I'm not spending $785 to unlock music I have already purchased. Let alone the whole mess with DRM in the video files.

Like I said though the Droid is a great phone. I have no problems with it other than the touch screen doesn't seem as responsive as the iPhone. I know longer use my iPhone as a phone anymore cause AT&T sucks where I live now. But when I was in Seattle, AT&T was great.

Plus there are more games available in the app store that are better than that of the Droid market. Chaos Rings anyone. However I'm on Verizon now so the point is mute. I was just curious if anyone really cared that much. I suppose you do so I'll shut up now. :D

I wholeheartedly believe Apple is prioritizing Global Sales way ahead of US Sales(as they should)... But, there is concerning news for Apple stemming from this strong surge of Android...

Nonetheless, Look at Q1 of 2009 till Q1 of 2010 for the iPhone - Still kicking arse in sales & making a ton of profit. But, is iPhone's market share going down or being stagnant? Yes, some think it is solely due to the anticipated new 4th Gen device, but the bulk of this stagnant market share is stemming from the strong adoption & gaining market presence of Android OS.

If I were Apple, I would slow down the exponential numbers Android is experiencing by offering the iPhone on other carriers. Even though you can argue the actual iPhone hardware is way ahead because Apple has one variation of their iPhone (profiting out the wazoo) & Android has many, there is still a big concern for Apple. Android is now saturating the smartphone market, and this is a direct hit at the iPhone. iPhone's biggest anticipated competitor is the Android devices, not Blackberry(RIM). Google is looking to take the market share away from Apple, and that is what is happening!!!

The ultimate hiccup for Apple is that the iPhone's target audience is exactly the same as Android. There are millions of people who don't have AT&T but want the iPhone & the features that come with it. Guess what... these millions of people have now resorted to an Android device because it is the closest product to an iPhone. They are both intuitive touchscreen smartphones with app store capabilities. So, in my opinion, this is bad news now for the iPhone, but even worse news if Apple lets this go on. People will start being comfortable with the Android OS, and those same people who wanted the iPhone now have their buyer wants eased. Now, there is much less of an incentive to switch to another carrier just because of the "wanted" iPhone. Google has started their quest of the "iPhone killer."

End that contract with AT&T and you will create a smartphone market dominance similar to the iPod has on the MP3 market...

Apple needs Verizon more than Verizon needs Apple now. And, Apple is the only one who can put out Android's fire!!!

Frankly, I'm glad Android has more users. The ubiquity of the iPhone saps some of its appeal.

Android has some amazing phones on a variety of excellent carriers, but this will only spur Apple on to better things. Apple always does better when its in second place.

In other words, if you're an Apple fan, cheer for Android.

I wonder if free Android phones count toward these numbers? By my house Verizon is giving away free Moto Droids with contract, no buy one get one free, just sign up.

.. verizon already paid for the phone and they give it away for "free" but make the $ in the contract.. so technically the phone not free

If this can be reeled in, Android will be a real contender. I think Android is a threat to Blackberry more than anyone else right now.

I'm not so sure about that.

RIM appeals greatly to the enterprise customer and the Android to the more unsophisticated buyer. The former is interested in security, uniform platform and communications, the latter is more about price, app availability, and no concern for security. (Remember, if the Android phone can report back to Google, then its only a matter of time before someone figures out how to tap into that stream.)

Hardware, yes. OS, not even close.

Are you serious!? I suppose you have never used a Android phone, because if you did, you would realize out ridiculous your statement was.

Name any app on the iphone and I can find it on Android with more features and functions. Not only that but the OS as a whole allows much much more customization and OS extras that Iphone currently or in 4.0 wont have PERIOD.

Now to step off my cheer section for android... i actually do find some applications on iphone are more polished than their android counterpart, that includes facebook for example.

Android can do everything plus more than the Iphone OS, the same cannot be said vice versa, at least not in the foreseeable future.

AND, the free phone comes with the requirement of another smart phone line charges. Ha ha, bend over so I can install your new free phone.
