At that age - an iPod Touch or iPad is a much better bet than an iPhone. Do they need LTE/cellular capabilities at that age? No. My daughter is 6. She has an iPad. We can iMessage us or family members. An iPhone would be a huge waste of monthly cost and expense.

All of my other kids had a phone at age 13 - a flip phone. Once they showed us they could take care of it for a year and they saved up some, they could get an iPhone - but they had to pay for part of it.

Roughly the same here with our kids. First iPhone, they had to pay the upfront cost (back in the days of contracts and subsidized phones). Younger got a 6, paying the $200, and elder got a 5S, opting for the less expensive and actually available phone (right when the 6 was released).

Younger kid took really good care of hers. Bought her own case(s), always kept it charged, had only a couple of minor misplaced-phone moments. It crapped out after three years, at which point she wanted an 8. Since she'd been consistently responsible with it, we priced it as if we were replacing it under warranty - nearest like-for-like given availably new models. She paid the difference between the low-end 6S and the low-end 8 that she bought - $250 this time.

Older kid lost her first flip phone, and thus ended up waiting longer than the younger one did for a smart phone. She "lost" her 5S regularly, but it was always in her room. She kept her phone through the last two years of high school, and most of her first college year. By then her 5S was really showing its age, so I got her the SE as a combination Christmas / birthday / late graduation gift.

That said, ours didn't get phones until middle school. I cannot imagine giving a 6 or 7 year old a smart phone of any sort - completely unnecessary.

She says they won't upsell iphone x, but then with recent news of Apple no longer selling iphone 7 series...hmm...

Why not? Everyone can use an iPhone. That is the point. They are simple to use, while also holding incredibly powerful capabilities.
Like cancer.

As a former Apple Store employee, this is how things always worked. The idea is to match the customer with the product which is truly right for them.
Actually, the idea is to upsell.

Why do you think Apple gimps models and is a grinch on basics?

Can't wait for the iPhoneFM

What happened to iphone 7 256GB? You killed it as soon as Iphone 8 launched. Angela keep your mouth shut, don't give people explaination. People are very angry - improve iphone 6s battery that you have killed with new OS which supports new phones only.

“If it's someone who's leaning into something else, what do they need?”

What does this mean? I am puzzled.

Does she mean “leaning towards” and is just stupid? This is my working hypothesis.

I still don’t understand why references to Ming-Chi Kuo almost always require the inclusion of some sort of laudatory modifier, like “a reputable Apple analyst at KGI securities.” Here and on other sites, he so frequently gets the additional boost, to the point it’s kind of wierd.

Because Kuo gets apple kickbacks. He is just a started help apple when things are not selling well or Apple needs person other than media guys where they can save their a$ssss.

Is it true store employees get no commission? I remember a few months after the Apple Watch was out, I tried to convince my spouse to get one since I loved mine. When we were there, I tried to tell my spouse all the features and the staff simply said "It is not worth buying", which was kind of dumb.
It's always been true. Why have commission in a place where only 35% of the staff sells? Apple retail has historically paid they're employees quite a bit more than most other retail joints. Part time specialists start at around $15/hr

Does anyone believe this statement? Apple did slow down production of the 8.
Why would they need to upsell? Apple's never tried to upsell customers, they simply present options at multiple price points and let the customer decide (with some guidance from apple store employees)

Any spiffy title transcends his status as Cooks' ventriloquist's dummy
