They don't have to, besides they already selling this phone covered with glass. The repairs is gonna go up despite the sells is low, to keep the high revenue coming for Apple. They know what they're doing and Cook knows exactly how to make Apple profitable. Besides iPhone 8 is not doing well they probably sell you the iPhone 8 first to keep the numbers go up before the next Apple's performance report.

If they're 6 or 7 years old, what do they need?

Yeah they could probably do with an iPhone 8. But if they’re 14 I guarantee that nothing short of iPhone X is good enough, because animojis.

Not the experience i witnessed in my local apple store the other day.
I was standing by one of the display tables overhearing an apple store rep talking down the iPhone 8 basically agreeing with the customers when they were debating that the iphone 8 looks are dated, and proceeded to upsell the X advising the couple to wait.

I think it's hilarious that people are fixated on the notch.
I’m totally fine with the notch, but as someone who despises the cellular Apple Watch’s red dot, I can understand how a relative small design element can turn people off to the whole product. But at least the TrueDepth sensor array has a purpose.

This is not entirely true to the Apple store nearest to me. Bought my iPhone 8 Plus and the guy literally looked at me confused as to why I wouldn't just hold out for the X.

I basically told him to not worry, I've done my research. But overall made me a bit unsure about my purchase.
Apple Store employees are ultimately individuals, not a hive mind. Sounds like this particular employee was just more enthusiast about the X and thought it was a better value. It’s equally likely than another employee would’ve advocated for a “more reliable” Touch ID model.

Currently I have an iPhone 6 64GB and I am looking at getting an iPhone 8 64GB for $699 with less expensive Apple Care for $129. I may even drive down to Delaware for some tax free shopping.

I have given this a lot of thought and typically I am ready for a new phone in 2-3 years. Eventually down the road I will get OLED and facial recognition.

iPhone 8 is a significant upgrade when compared to my iPhone 6. It is better in almost every conceivable way.

And the iPhone 8 price value cannot be ignored compared to iPhone X. In 2-3 years, OLED and facial recognition will be mainstream and I will not have to overpay for it.

I think he’s saying that it’s easier for Apple to justify their $999/$1149 iPhone X because they can say “hey, we have iPhones that start at $350! you don’t have to spend $1000+!”

And some people are going to want the latest and greatest and want to get as far away from the entry model as possible.

Yeah that’s called choice. Don’t see what’s wrong with that.

I don’t think you know what upselling means. You’re listing every price point, so? How is that upselling?
Because dangling incrementally higher price points one after another in close proximity is a form of upselling built into the pricing model. Apple's been doing it for years (so have many others).

I call BS on that. I was picking up my iPhone 8 on launch day (in Toronto, CAN) and when I got to the store they tried to "sell me everything" under the sun. He was trying SO hard to get me to buy other stuff that I told him point blank to F OFF with that upsell crap. Grabbed my iPhone 8 and left.

Was this at an Apple Store? I have been to all the Apple stores in NYC and not once they have ever tried to up sell me on any product at all. They seem to treat their customers as people who are knowledgeable and know what they want, they don’t really try to insert their opinion unless you ask a question.

What did they try to sell you? They don’t make commission so I don’t see the point of that.

they do get commission from selling AC+ and only AC+ nothing else. he might have been pushing for AC+ but if its things like extra charger / wireless charger / case / screen protector then I call bs unless that OP is a dick and they just want to piss him off and make him spend as much $$ as possible.

Yes your one anecdotal experience with a single specialist is totally the rule.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but it's just your opinion man.

False. Had some of the best AC+ numbers in the entire Midwest market, never got a dime extra for it.

What about 64 - gap - 256 GB, Angela?

Isn't apple good at being behind the trend?
I don't know why they always remove the most convenient space option. If I am going to shell out a 1000$, I'd want it to be for 128GB phone. 32-64GB is so obsolete. iPhone 7/7+ had the best storage options.

They know what they're doing and Cook knows exactly how to make Apple profitable.
By making great products which people are willing to shell out good money for?

What about it? I think it's a great way of cutting SKUs down from 3 to 2, which in turn makes it easier to manage inventory. 64gb will suffice for many users, and for those who want extra storage for 4k footage and stuff, may as well jump straight to 256, which incidentally costs less than two $100 storage bumps (128gb, 256gb).

And Apple is trying to upsell customers to last year's iPhone model?

This just goes to show that they are catering to every price point in order to sell more iPhones, not to upsell. The intention is not to push consumers to buy a more expensive iphone; it's so they can choose one which best suits their budget.

Sorry, but The Notch should be taken serious. There is no reason for flimsiness here.
As a design statement from Joni Ive, the greatest desginer the planet has ever known, it was made with intrinsic care, carefuly selecting from only the very few materials Apple would select.
Careful selection of the area to be obstructed took several years. Further dimensioning was performed to accomplish a long list of particular Notch objectves.
In order to achieve that, several labs across the world collaborated to have various cultural aspects reflected into meticulous design, design of the kind that determines success in the various markets that only Apple, as a global company, is able to achieve.

Well, I do take the Notch serious.
As a prelude to a potential iPhone X preorder, I applied it with tape to my iPhone 6 a week ago.
Then I put one onto my car's front window - to test its dynamic effect - and I couldn't resist to apply it on my TV screen that night. Today, my son is trying it out on the kitchen window.

First reaction: it initially just appeared as an obstruction of sight.
But then, slowly but unmistakenly, its impact did become apparent.
And there is soo much more. It gets so more interesting what's behind it. Also, articles and dear things, meaningful or not, will disappear behind it. Adding a dimension to viewing. For me, it actually depicts the meaning of life, with its full dynamics.
It's only now that I fully understand what Joni has been doing for the last 4 years and how abysmal it's net effect may seem ...
I am so grateful to him to show us the transitoriness of life. For me, he is the direct son of God. The one that decides what must be shown and what must be hidden. He was such a humble guy but waaahh, the most appreciated things just disappear in the notchy shadows of the day...

Joni, the greatest geniuses are never understood before they die - or disappear behind self-created darkness

Yeah, par for the course. Unfunny gibberish.

I had begun to wonder why apple stores had begun to resemble community centers for senior citizens. Then I saw this lady. I'm booked in next Thursday for knitting classes!
