Heh, wouldn't this be an interesting smash-n-grab from car. Unbelievable someone would buy this, even if your rich there's a limit... Hey Mark Cuban, found ya a phone charger.

I will replace my gold necklace with that so I can have a charger cable around all the time.

I have some 24K gold plated can of Alps fresh air for sale. Was $999, now just $899 for two. It’s already sold out. You’ll be put on the waiting list.

This seems extra odd when all indications are that Apple is moving to USB-C or the smart connector going forward. Or extra smart, I guess, when you can sell a USBC<->USBC cable to the same people next year!
That was also my first impression. “Lifetime Warranty” not so impressive if it no longer works with the new 2022 iphone you bought. However, I digress - if you wear out 5 Apple cables (3 if you use the ‘6 ft’ length) in a year ... you do the math. 😉

This goes against everything I think of, when I think of Anker products:

Robust, high quality and good value.

Strange move.

They established a reputation that way, but their prices are no longer as cheap and their products now come in varying qualities. This may look extreme but the purpose is not to be a cash cow but rather to maintain an image of "premium" in peoples minds. Like ugahairydawgs says; it's marketing 101. It's the same reason Apple have unreasonably expensive things like Mac Pro wheels and Monitor stands. Even if it doesn't sell it serves a purpose.

Strange move. Although maybe it will go with the gold Nissan GTR I saw on instagram the other day...

"There's no explanation for why Anker, a company that specializes in affordable products, has created a $100 USB-C to Lightning cable."
There doesn't have to be a "why" beyond them thinking "Hey, this is pretty nice, and I think people will buy it." It definitely seems pretty nice. Now to see whether people will buy it. It's expensive but not ridiculous like a $100k diamond studded iPhone, anyway.

But that's a little bit of my point. There are some people who can spend $100 on frivolous things. It doesn't matter if the port goes away in a month or two years. $100 to them is like $1 to you or I. So what you find silly because of the price, is not the same for someone else.
You are 100% right. Ultimately the market will react accordingly.

By the way monoprice has a lifetime warranty on all cords and cables.

I’m all for calling out first world excess, late stage capitalism blah blah blah but pulling this cable out in a New York Starbucks gon get me 🥰 or mugged.

They could have made the pin connections gold though 😡

That’s actually pretty reasonable as far as gold-plated accessories go. What’s the value of the gold content used on the cable?

I think plating is usually a high margin facade these days. How many milligrams of this precious metal can I electroplate onto a very small surface.

I made an account just to say the multiple Anker cable I've bought are hot garbage. Stop saying they are of any decent quality. Cables that need warranty replacements suck.

Hardly hate. People are likely voicing their dislike for something they perceive as very little value with a huge markup. Feedback is breakfast for champions, you know?
The best feedback is with your wallet. People say the exact same stuff about Apple products but obviously people want and spend billions on them. It just reminds me of jealousy.

I have lots of Anker cables and chargers and have zero issues with any of them. You made an account just to say how much you dislike Anker 😂

People get upset about things they can't afford. And people get upset that others have more money than them. There's an extreme lack of comprehension that not everything is for them, there are different markets and products for different people. It's why so many people were angered about the Mac Pro's price while never intending to purchase it. "This thing I never needed is out of my price range, that's outrageous! How dare they!" Pride and ego supersede rationality and logic. I guarantee you there are plenty of people that drop money on these types of products without a single thought of the cost.
I agree. I had a friend who would say Ferrari is garbage and many of the comments here remind me of him

On a related note, just as an indication of Anker's approach to marketing cables:

This is the faux-leather pouch that came with the last USB-C cable I purchased from Anker. I can't say I wanted the pouch in the first place (nor was it listed as coming with the product), but I suppose it does lend a kind of "quality" feel to it. (Adding distinctiveness to a "mere cable" by throwing in a pouch. Hmm...)

The concept of trying to impress people with a gold charging cable makes me feel sad for those that think they need this in their life.
Hopefully, people won't think they "need" this, but rather they will recognize that they "want" this, and know the difference between really needing and just wanting. Most luxury purchases are like that. They aren't generally "necessary" per se, but they can look and seem desirable to some. (I wouldn't buy it even if I had the money to blow, because it doesn't really add any value to the functionality of the product, which is more important to me than the glitzy aspect. Other people may be different, though.)

To each his own. All of the Anker cables and adapters I've bought so far work all right so far. Of course, cables are neither indestructible nor infallible...

When did it become wrong for an accessory company to have a little fun with their product line up and offer a one off limited edition item at a premium price? I say good for Anker, I hope they sell thousands of these.
