Well done, thank you.

I've stayed away from the Marketplace forums in the past because of concerns about unsuccessful transactions (e.g. getting ripped off). To be honest, the quality of the sellers wasn't always stellar, and many seemed to have little to nothing invested in the community here.

I still have concerns some small concerns about the Marketplace here, but these kinds of changes reduce them a lot.

Thanks again!

I have bought and sold a few things in the marketplace and have had good experiences, but lately I've stayed away. I'm not really sure why -- no real concerns of getting ripped off as I usually do some background research and stuff. I hope this will spark my interest in it again.

It seemed like every post had a mod reply in it saying to tone down the bumps or to not add something that isn't helpful...all that kind of stuff. I think this could be a very good change for it. I just hope it will keep popularity and use due to the limited base. I know of some private marketplaces that are dull and have new items rarely.

Overall, it's probably a good a move. But, I can't help but feel slightly screwed. Every transaction I've been involved with has been perfect. I have a perfect ebay rating for reference. I've been happy, and the other guy has been happy. I've been a member of the forums since March of 2006, have around 189 posts, and average 0.22 posts per day. I love poking around the Marketplace, but what am I supposed to do now? Wait another 277.27 days to get back in? "Spam" post until I get up to 250 posts? No, I'm not a crappy member, so I won't spam post to get my count up.

I guess it just plain stinks that a good forum citizen of over 2 years with no issues will get kicked from the marketplace, and will not gain access for almost 1 more year based on current posting habits (which aren't likely to change).

I ask you to reconsider grandfathering in members who meet the current post count rule and have been members either 180 days or 1 year (what about even 1, 1.5, or 2yrs for current members who don't meet the new post count rule?). Be a little more lenient with current members. Otherwise, I will use other trading forums, not because I want to, but because I won't have access to the marketplace, and I like this place a lot! I like the people, a lot! :(

[/end rant]

Good stuff. Had one excellent smooth sale on the marketplace a couple of years back, now looking to use it again. Glad to see it's getting a bit tighter!

Is there a place where I can find what sub-forum posts do not count towards our total post count?

I understand the changes, but this really bites. I've made 6 or 7 purchases and it is the primary reason I visit MacRumors. That coupled with reading many posts so I can get the most out of my mac. And because I am new to macs I don't really fell qualified to answer many of the questions that are out there..

I guess one less person coming regularly isn't such a big deal, but that's the way it is.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

While I'm 5 months and about a hundred plus posts out, after reading this thread I do understand the need to have some sort of control. After having someone try to scam me on my Amazon auction, I no longer am naive to online scamming and reliability issues.

I will be bummed because browing the feelers gave me a base to make an appraisal of my stuff *and I hate being excluded from anything* but I do understand.

I'd like to reiterate for some of those commenting that we haven't had much trouble with scams. Our more serious problems have typically been issues with buyers or sellers who are honest but flakey. Further, while our administrators have spent a great deal of time trying to resolve these issues when they come up, these incidents are still rather rare.

While these rare issues are troubling, the main problem is with small issues in the market place. Small issues in the marketplace (non-interest posts, thread bumping, posts outside the marketplace, etc) are responsible for most of our post reports. From our perspective, the marketplace is taking up a disproportionate amount of moderator time relative to its importance on these forums.

By requiring members to participate more thoroughly in the forums prior to participating in the marketplace, the hope is that members will gain greater familiarity with the rules and etiquette of our forums, and thus be less likely to cause the frequent small issues in the forum. The fact that buyers and sellers will also be more familiar with each other is primarily a side benefit.

it seems a little quiet in the marketplace... I've put something out but no real interest. I used to get some sort of comments in the past!

Well, I dont seem to be alone as an older member who refuses to spam posts to meet requirements, but still loved using the Marketplace and now cannot. At risk of going OT, does anyone know of a suitable alternative to the MR marketplace? I will miss it.

It is.

If you posted to a thread that was moved to the Wasteland or deleted, those posts will be removed from your total.

Posts made to the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum, the Console Games forum, and the Marketplace forum are not included either.

Individual posts deleted by moderators are also excluded from your post count.

Well, you'll find classifieds at:

http://www.applefritter.com/forum/103
http://macosg.com/group/viewforum.php?f=10
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=5
http://forums.macnn.com/forumdisplay.php?f=59

But, the one I was most comfortable with was this group:

http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap

I haven't participated with any of the above for a while. But, the last one is probably where you're going to find the safest transactions.

The first 4 are also great sites for community interaction. So, you could check them out as well. I frequent MacRumors, but occasionally check the others out.

Thank you. I haven't been to Applefritter in ages! I guess I'll get more involved in those sites until my pathetic post count here gets up in numbers.

Hopefully they'll do for you. They're nice sites. Much different crowd at them than what you find here. Every place has a bit of personality that comes through.

Applefritter always seemed nice. The feel was always more of the old-timers club. Friendly, respectful, and helpful. And, you get a lot of Apple II users there.

They don't seem to get as much traffic there. But, I've sold a couple of things there in the past. And, I've participated in the forums there a little (though it's been a long time now).

I noticed I haven't noticed the Marketplace forum missing...

Directly from the FAQ:

This kind of sucks. I could probably make the 250 posts, and I was excited because I only have a couple of months for that, then I realized that I had to be a member for 6 months, which I personally think is ridiculous, I'd say like 90 - 120 days maximum for that.

Oh well, not my rules, I suppose I wouldn't be whining if I met the criteria. Too bad. :(

It is quiet but also seems a bit more business-like. Hopefully that will also mean that people's threads will stay visible and near the top of the first page for far longer, instead of being bumped downwards by 'PM sent' and non-interest posts.

And over time, with a rapidly-increasing membership becoming eligible, activity should pick up. Let's see how things pan out over the next few months before getting too gloomy.

The new changes are great- I love the feeling that I am dealing with members who are actually serious about what they are selling/buying. I agree the atmosphere is much more businesslike and professional.
