The new marketplace seems a lot more reputable now. I wouldn't think twice about purchasing from someone on the new marketplace... all familiar faces!

I miss the marketplace...I got a couple of steals there within my first or second month of membership...

The marketplace had a few issues that sparked the creation of the revised version, but it's all for the better now that is gives members time to get aquatinted with others, as it helps to know who you're buying from.

I think thats the best part about this forum. Everybody seems very close and friendly. And I feel very safe buying stuff here. This is a great website that arn made.

But the idea is to verify who somebody is before you make a deal. If a troll comes in and low-balls you, who cares? If you have refrences and good communication, why should you need 70000 posts and 10 years on the forum to be trusted? Its up to the buyer/seller to decide if someone is trustworthy enough; the way its set up now, there are probably 10 people with limited selection of items for sale. I have bought/sold/traded 50+ items on a forum and had to verify every person, never had a single problem.

I came here because i figured there would be more interest in the powerbook and i want to sell it without waiting 4 months or going to ebay. This will be my first and last mac, so waiting 6 months and posting 250 times is pretty pointless and i think there are alot of deals that are being missed out on. Oh well

The idea is: better to miss a deal than be cheated in one.

I think you misread... it is 250 posts and 6 months
You are closer than you thought! ;)

This isn't eBay or Craigslist, it is MacRumors and the Marketplace is more of a niche forum within it

I can agree with the 'X Months' side but not necessarily the number of posts... I've been registered here for nearly five years now and read daily but I'm not that prolific a poster. I doubt you get many scammers signing up this long ago!

I am not a Marketplace user, but I think the reasoning is longevity and credibility. 6 months for the staying power... not just to scam, and the 250 posts so others can have a track record to get to know you (in the absence of a feedback system)

After reading about some incidents that happened last year, I think it should be 500 posts and 9-12 months membership.

Or if its 250 and 6 months membership, you should have to pay to become a member of MacRumors or supply a telephone number to the mods or something.

Luckily, I was never scammed, buying or selling - but I've read people were.

Yeah, the new rules have slowed down the Marketplace quite a bit, I would guess. I wouldn't know though, apparently being a member for 2 years doesn't matter quite as much as posting. I am still under the conviction that time as a member is more important than post counts, but hey, I don't own the site. If I want to have my own rules, I could get my own site. Good luck with the sale elsewhere.

From the moderators perspective the marketplace as was took up a lot of time and brought conflict by the bucketload, the new rules are designed to limit the amount of work we have to do in what is an entirely secondary forum.

I'm moving this to Site feedback incidentally, as it doesn't really belong here.

i happen to also still have my PB12....why would you really want to sell it, would seem to be a go between when your having computers issues..???

The idea should be to be careful as a buyer/seller and only deal with people who you can verify and trust. I had to sell things with no references when i first started and had to ship my items before payment, never got scammed.

Just as a scammer wont post 250 times for 6 months, they also won't deal with verifying their identity several times.

I like the new rules. Before a couple of people were scammed big time. I think his name was MacBooksRock or something, he managed to pull off about 4 scams and made about 250 dollars.

yeah, ric, seems like this had been debated for a while and the mods decided.

i think it is a good thing considering the horror threads i read. this is a great community and you want to do your best to preserve it (which is what the mods had in mind)

Why don't we go for 5000 posts and 2-3 years of membership isntead? (Just because you have what they require, don't try to be an ass about it)  Most of the topics on these forums are not even worth posting. Giving the Mods' info means more work for them.

Yes, there is a distinct lack of serious topics or even opportunities to legitimately help someone compared to the Apple Discussion's site.

I liked that site because I was able to help people out pretty much constantly. But, I also disliked that I couldn't actually have a conversation with anyone (against the rules).

So, here you get a little blend of both sides.

The few (comparatively) questions are usually simple and quickly answered and that is all that is needed. So, little opportunity to jump in for most (unless you just want to say pretty much the same thing).

The discussion / conversation topics are usually not particularly interesting. But, I've jumped into more than a few just for light hearted entertainment.

Of course, there are those that take themselves too seriously. So, then a simple comment can start a flame war.

But, yes, I could see your point.

If I only commented on threads that I found really interesting, then perhaps this would be one of my first posts.

Instead, I usually just kind of hang out here and kill time when I'm waiting for the kids to fall asleep.

Sometimes I'll find something legitimately interesting. And, will post some comments.

Other times, I'll find something that would simply be of entertainment value depending on the reply.

I've always enjoyed a good debate. And, can argue multiple sides of a story. I used to debate with my female friends just for fun. Then, we'd switch sides of the debate and argue it out for a while. It wasn't really planned that way, it just happened, and we'd argue it out for a while. We just liked to argue.

So, sometimes, I'll jump into something just for the fun of it. And, let the debate start. Even if it's something I don't personally care about... It can still be fun to debate and see what everyone has to say and so on.

But, yes, if you are looking for serious and seriously interesting discussion, then you might be better suited to one of the many other forums.

If you just want to check out the current rumors, and then have some fun with the members here, then this is as good of place as any to kill some time.

Marketplace disappeared?

Maybe it's just me, or because I've not been here in a while, but it seems to have disappeared?

Cheers!
