Hold On -- no big media event scheduled yet

Folks:

Don't get all worked up on 10.5 yet. You can GUARANTEE that Steve Jobs will have a big media event around the formal shipping announcement, if for nothing else then to blow everyone away with all those "Top Secret" features and to put Vista in its place.

There is no way this will be a stealth event and, all of a sudden, 10.5 is magically available. No...keep your eye out for a major media event and invitation.

I think its safe to assume that you will not see 10.5 in March because nothing big has been scheduled or even leaked yet.

Can't we just go ahead and get 10.5?

I suspect Apple have to ensure Tiger and Leopard compatibility as there are many Macs out there that won't be upgraded to 10.5 ever and many of those may want to use new toys such as ATV and so forth so I bet a lot of these late breaking Tiger updates are geared in that direction. Just my guess anyway. :)

Why? There was a 10.3 update after Tiger came out...
Yes, I know. What I mean is you can't tell from a version number if it's going to be the last one. You can only tell in retrospect it was the last one.

Apple might release 10.4.9 next week (not unlikely) and 10.5 near the end of June (not unlikely). If it really is June for Leopard a 10.4.10 is very likely but you won't know for sure until it's out or Leopard is about two months old.

Version numbers have very little predictive qualities.

looks like they are really taking their time with this one instead of just shoving it out the door... trying to make sure it's really good. Kind of indicative of it being the last update.

Like they did for 10.3.9 ... 10.4.9 will likely contain bridging frameworks and libraries that make supporting 10.4 and 10.5 easier... basically they likely will back port some amount of functionality from 10.5 to 10.4.9 (usually low level, runtime related, not really new API).

So I hope they take all the time they need. (assuming 10.4.9 is the last update to the 10.4 branch)

And despite yet another version of OS X officially ending on a .9 in time for a major version update, there will still be those who claim it's not a decimal versioning system. :)

Look everyone, this must be the last revision of tiger because after 10.4.9 comes 10.5.0. Everyone knows that

:p ;) :p ;) :p

Seriously, I don't care about 10.4.9 because I never get any bugs with 10.4.8. Even if I did, I will buy leopard the day it comes out (actually I will preorder about a month before :D) and leopard.0 will be really buggy. So any system-wide bliss will be short lived anyway.

Looks like the session tacks are announced for WWDC. The one covering Leopard looks like it will not be a preview type thing. WWDC is June 11-15 so I can only assume Leopard will be out before Jun 11. Looks like we will not have to wait until the last day of spring (June 21) it will be at least 10 days earlier. I seriously doubt it will be released in March.

It's rare for Apple to end at .9, they did that only once, with Panther.

Apple has never used a decimal system. 10.2.3 doesn't follow decimal principles, 10.3.6 doesn't follow decimal principles, 10.4.8 doesn't follow decimal principles, QuickTime 7.0.3.50 doesn't follow decimal principles. It is a software versioning system which, unlike the decimal system, uses more than one dot (or comma in large parts of the world).

Intel's "Santa Rosa" comes out in May.

Apple releases some Santa Rosa based computer in June and also releases Leopard in early June (just before or even at WWDC (June 11th) with support for the new Santa Rosa based hardware

Tiger will get a final upgrade to 1.4.10 so that it can also support the new hardware.

Apple will need a new high resolution display if the "Resolution Independence" feature in Leopard is to be meaningful. So I suspect they will have at least one new display out June11th or before.

ALL the developers Ive read say "dont hold your breath" on 10.5.
Its still too unstable and buggy.

NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME.

Looks like it will be a Spring release.
Oh...right...Spring lasts until June 21...

The fact that the server and client versions of both platforms were released at the same time to developers tells me these builds are gonna be the last and are just sitting in the wings waiting. When they get sent to users depends on when they fix the new iTunes and Quicktime. This is more than likely the hold up for the :apple: TV also.

Still betting on an April release for Leopard.Perhaps even March 20th to coincide with the :apple: TV release.

Amen to that - I also suspect that we're soon going to see the last 10.3.9 or better software requirements as everything moves to 10.4.9 or better when the associated SDK's start becoming widely used. Compiling for Panther will soon become as much of a PITA as compiling for Jaguar now.

I found string resources in the 10.4.9 update that contain the word 'phone' this must mean that apple is developing the iphone.

wait... what?

So will the memory leaks in Safari be worked out in this release? I sure hope so! :D Can't wait for Leopard....

Whether there is a leak or not, Leopard will fix it. XCode is being updated to perform automatic garbage collection. In layman's terms, this means that leaks should be a thing of the past.

Isnt that stating the obvious or would they bring out 10.4.9.5 ?

There have been many debates on this. It has never happened before, but some are convinced that because it is not a decimal system it is possible/likely/certain to happen...

10.3.9 was released on about April 16, 2005, while Tiger came out on April 29. Tiger's release date was announced and it was open for preorders as of about April 1, IIRC.

one small step for apple...one giant leap towards us having leopard

10.4.9 update will be released after 10.5 ;)
