The way it always goes on Macrumors:

Now: hate it hate it hate it, it looks cheap, ugly, Apple would never...
Sept: Love it, love it, love it, great form factor, more durable, so glad Apple...

Only reason they seem to be doing this is to eliminate the 30 pin connector and standardize the 4" screen in their entire lineup.

I don't agree with the idea of placing a cheaper looking product in the line up when the 4/4s are still available and will be cheaper when the 5s gets launched but I understand their business point of view.

Bye bye iPad 2

And don`t forget the ban that Iphone 4/4S could face due to CDMA chips for a reason to do this!

I've started to think that this might be a terrible move by Apple. Soon there will be tons of cheap iphones that people don't care about everywhere. There'll be an apple product seen as disposable and it's going to take away from their top of the line extremely high quality product facade. They should have made these look a lot different or maybe even produced them under a different name. I really hope they release non-retina macbook pros with the haswell processors so I can get a sweet computer before they mess everything up.

I guess they just have to choose.
Sell a lot of product or sell to snobs.

An "elite tech company like Apple" is selling mass produced eletronic devices that are far more common to remotely be anything like "elite". The iPhone is pretty much as mainstream as it gets and it opened up a whole new customer base for Apple. And I think it's a good thing that they are targeting as many potential users as possible with this phone, to me it's mainly about the eco system. The specs don't need to be crazy high (although they are missing out on that ehm.. "specific" crowd that won't buy anything under 16 cores and 256 gb ram), the whole thing just has to appeal to the mass market in general. More clients = more new Apple stuff in the long run.

That "lightning" port looks a heck of a lot like the Micro USB ports of various android devices...

It looks identical to the lightning port on the bottom of the iPhone 5. Ditto for the headphone jack.

These don't appear to be knockoffs. Especially after the various videos that have been popping up. This is the real deal.

Looks cheap.

An elite tech company like Apple would never release such a subpar product.

And yet

So Apple never released the iPod Shuffle? The white plastic MacBook Air?

Apple is not about "being elite", it is about making what it thinks are optimal tradeoffs. You're willing to claim this will be a "subpar" product with poor tradeoffs based on nothing but the shape of the backplate?

the speaker holes do not look apple at all. I know it's a tiny thing to fuss over but that yells fake to me.

Why do people think that by Apple releasing a cheaper priced product that automatically means "cheap garbage." Even when Apple releases something cheaper, its still a quality product. I don't think people called the iPhone 3G a cheap piece of junk, so why should this be any different? The quality of the build and plastic itself will still be premium. Judging by the leaked shots, and the way Apple has built a metal internal frame system with all the assembly locations built into the frame, its obvious that this product will still have Apple polish.

This picture though looks potentially like a knockoff, based only on the text on the back. Chinese fakes typically have larger bolder fonts on the back, than what Apple typically uses. And the other leaks we've seen, the 'iPhone' text actually uses the thinner font from iOS 7, not this bolder in-your-face font from this pic.

It's just another fill in model as Apple accepts that as the mass market retailer they've become, the public expects reasonably priced products. They don't buy style they buy low price. A perfect phone for the Walmart crowd, it's time to embrace Apples mass market mentality. It's just a numbers game at this point. Offered in colorful plastic shells to grab the impulse buyers, this phone will do what's expected of it. Lure people in, who cannot afford Apples other pricier products. I predict massive sales volume for the cheap iPhone.

I think this is a knock off... The font looks too bold and the color of the legal terms looks too large/dark/bold/something. I think it will happen but I think it will not be this.

Yes, it's using the old "iPhone" font not the new, lighter one.

Also, the low-cost iPhone does not have metal rings around its ports nor its camera lenses.

This image is very likely a fake.

Besides the use of plastic, this design is superb. It's a seamless, simple back. Like the 3G, but better since the curves make it less bulky. Furthermore, there is no distiction between the back and front, like the 3G had.

Conslusively, this may very well be the simplest and most elegant design ever, which compensates for the added thickness and use of plastic.

It's perfect for a budget model.

Nah dude you're not seeing it... if they can release a lower price point phone they will gain tons of iPhone adopters... but they will be plugged into the same iOS App Store ecosystem.

The stuff on the screen, the important part of the iPhone, will be the same. This move has great potential to skyrocket iPhone adoption.

What part of "in the fall" does iFun not understand?

EDIT: Posted this to the wrong article, sorry.

Form factor might be accurate, but I doubt this is the real thing. I think they're more likely to use the matte white polycarbonate they used in the Macbook.

Or maybe I'm just hoping. That material just feels more high end.

I'm amazed at the sheer ignorance displayed on this post by a large percentage of people.

Remember iPhone 3G? iPhone 3GS? Both quality and "cheap" (according to the fools here today based on it being plastic) models that sold like hotcakes. In the years 2008 and 2009, EVERYONE it seemed had an iPhone 3G/3GS and people LOVED it. Apple sold millions and made a lot of money.

From a business and economic standpoint, re-releasing a "plastic" or "cheap" iPhone makes perfect sense. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool, bottom line. And perhaps they should brush up on some economics or take a basic business class.

But of course, don't let people's ignorance, poor economic thinking skills, and snobbery get in their way.

These new iPhones will sell very, very well. And to be honest, I think the white plastic iPhone looks really nice.
