I wonder if with the new iteration, the 32gb will become the lower end price-point iPad like the 16gb was last year.

I'm trying to stay strong, because I seriously want one of these to fulfill my dreams of having a digital sketchpad and animation flipbook, and scriptwriting thingamajig. I have to stay strong and not buy a 1st gen refurb 32gb on Apple's site. It'd be just my luck if the next iteration comes out for the same price as the refurb.

This has fake all over it. "iPad 2"? Even if these are prototype images, Apple generally does not name product revisions with numerical increments (the iPhone may be an exception). As others have mentioned, a rear facing camera? I can't imagine holding a large iPad to take a picture. A front facing camera makes more sense for video conferencing.

Fake. Period.
Er... I'm sure it will be named iPad 2 (there's nothing wrong with numerical increments). But what you failed to mention is that Apple never puts model numbers on the back of their products. In other words, all four generations of iPhone had the same word written on the back: iPhone (whether it was iPhone 3G, 3GS or iPhone 4).

Sorry, should have been more clear. That's what I meant, that numerical values are not placed on Apple products. Apple would most likely not label the next iPad "iPad 2" on the back.

You can always tell a new product is due from Apple when it looks like the competition's products are starting to catch up.

But like that classic line from Futurama when Fry is playing a real world version of space invaders - "Fool! You shot at where I was instead of where I was going to be!"

Apple's competition is competing (or trying to compete) with the iPad 1, not the iPad 2. As always, it will be too late. They continue to show working prototypes, while Apple reveals a working device close to shipping. :)

"Fake"... No *****!

Am I the only one who read (and understood) the writeup?

"...said by Gopod to represent the actual appearance...". Keyword "represent"! Of course this isn't the actual next gen. iPad. It's just a mockup created for fun.

In my opinion, it looks like a step down from the current design.
I'm sure it looks better in person, if that is the real design. It says iPad 2 on the back ... maybe its a Chinese knock-off. I think its a fake.

I totally agree. It seems like this should have been the first version. The current iPad looks so much more sleek.

There's a lot of the standard fare in here bashing a device/design that they'll later praise when Apple officially announces it - but no matter - looks good to me.

For those who don't get the cameras, augmented reality apps aside, the cameras could be used for inventory purposes (e.g. barcode scanners) - can see them working well not just for the average consumer, but for the business user as well.

I know its a mock-up - but could they at least mock up a flash for the rear camera? :D

Perhaps when we realise that the sound is pretty good when we are looking at the back of the unit, with the screen facing away from us. Then Apple loyalists will tell us our ears are fitted to out head in the wrong place.
Who in their right mind would fit a speaker on the rear of a device that may be used on a flat surface.
On a small handheld device as a phone, well, perhaps you would get away with the argument as you could say it's always being held in one hand, but the iPad is often going to be laying resting on something, esp when using both hands on say a game.

Just saying....that speaker grill is ugly and Apple better not produce something similar.

All the 2004 era Powerbooks had this grill. So, it's very Apple. I imagine a lot of complaints from people resting it on their legs and having grillwork marks, though.

I'm just happy they included both front and back cameras!!

Hopefully 128MB will be true too, and a higher-res display would be nice.

Great app for the iPhone but for a large iPad? Not so much. Could you imagine trying to hold a ~10" iPad to scan an item?

As for augmented reality, does that not require holding the device in front of you as you look around (for a store/stars/directions)? Again, I just don't see such a large device benefitting from a rear camera. The iPhone is great due to its smaller design, but a large iPad?

Were you not born with muscles in your body? Can you not hold up a book? If you can, then you will have no problem using an iPad with a rear facing camera. COME ON, have you used an iPhone 4 yet? Hold the iPad in your hand and pretend you're pressing an onscreen button. It's not difficult in the SLIGHTEST. Sorry that you're so confused by a few inches in size. It happens.

These cameras cost nothing, they fit in with Apple's FaceTime world, why are you talking like it's a horrible idea? Not only is it a GREAT idea, it's a NO BRAINER idea, and it's an "ALREADY BEEN DONE in two other Apple products" idea.

As for this "Mock Up", that's all it is. Some guys made a mock up so people can see how well their cases fit and work. It's probably made out of plastic. The finish is probably spray paint. If it's from China, sure it's possible that it's a copy of the real prototype, but it would still be a copy of a prototype and not a final version. Let's keep calm about this.

This.

Wow. Sorry, I'm not Ms. Cleo. No one made any comment on its authenticity, unless you know something we don't. If it's "fake" why are you even bothering "looking at the design"?

PS nice way to address someone.

Because you wasted a paragraph trying to prove the device is fake.

It's a mockup. That's what a mockup is for. To test accessories and get a three dimensional look at it. No one made any comment on its authenticity because it's implied and most are assumed to know what a mockup is since every electronics store has them laying around on displays.

Mwhahahahahaha!! Love all the posters here saying 'Ewwww that better not be the design I aint getting it if it is blah blah blah!' Truth is you will buy it. Why?

Because you folk are the same people that totally beat down on the leaked iP4 photos and look what happened you all went out and bought one because it actually looks great. people dont like change thats all. get used to it. I for one think it will be an improvement.

My experience of the iPad v1 is that whilst its a great device, ergonomically it aint all that comfortable to hold and play about on. This design will hopefully rectify the problem and coupled with a bump in speed and memory should see another triumph for Apple. Just as long as it doesnt have some amazing new feat of antennae engineering design of course.

Macintosh II, Apple I, Apple II, Apple IIe, Apple IIc, Apple III, Lisa 2, Power Mac G3 G4 G5, iPhone 4, etc...

Please enlighten us as to what the next iPad is going to be called then? How are buyers gonna distinguish between the new gen and next gen?

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. On one hand, Apple could name every generation, (eg. 3G, 3GS, 4) or they could just say it's the new iPad like they do with iPods. I guess we'll see.

I still think dual cameras are unlikely for iPad.

I beg to differ. Of course, nobody would want to take photos or do some filming with a device as big as the iPad. That being said, one of the main features of facetime is the ability to show your video chat partner your current surroundings. Hence, a rear facing camera does make some sense.

I am wondering about the 128 GB. I currently own the 64 GB version and I haven't run out of space yet, contrary to my iPods (still longing for a 128 GB iPod touch or iPhone). Of course, if you want to carry a lot of video around, the idea of having the same amount of space as on an MBA might be intriguing. I wonder what they would/will charge for it.

Yeah, but what's it do beside sit face down on an invoice and look like an iPad grazed by a bullet?
