Great app for the iPhone but for a large iPad? Not so much. Could you imagine trying to hold a ~10" iPad to scan an item?

As for augmented reality, does that not require holding the device in front of you as you look around (for a store/stars/directions)? Again, I just don't see such a large device benefitting from a rear camera. The iPhone is great due to its smaller design, but a large iPad?

Never before has a digital camera shipped with such a large viewfinder. I've said it before and I will say it again. This will be a major selling point. Augmented reality, scanning, and just plain old mucking around. The youngsters and the oldies are gonna LOVE it. And they're the ones who get the most out of iPad anyway. Sorry but anyone who doesn't see the potential of the iPad with a rear facing camera simply lacks vision (no pun intended).

Are case manufactories so desperate to get any press? Do they all start showing off 'their' prototypes and 'their' iPad design ideas? Don't know if they are really based on any apple specs - I just remember the 'cases' for iPods that were floating around before one of the keynotes and the device for that case was not shown ....
Also I really hope no one 'finds' a prototype - it took so much air out of the iPhone 4 keynote. I like the rumors and hints and guessing before the events, but showing the actual device takes the fun out of it. If you just have 'hints' there is enough speculation for everyones entertainment.

This has fake all over it. "iPad 2"? Even if these are prototype images, Apple generally does not name product revisions with numerical increments (the iPhone may be an exception). As others have mentioned, a rear facing camera? I can't imagine holding a large iPad to take a picture. A front facing camera makes more sense for video conferencing.

Fake. Period.

Of course its fake....its a MOCK UP!

like the flat back but not feeling the tapered edges.

The tapered edges are necessary for being able to pick it up when it is on a flat surface. Not saying this is how Apple will implement it like in the image but that if the new iPad has a flat back then it must have tapered edges.

CES has been a bust for Microsoft and Intel as the two have nothing to air but dirty laundry.

Public dust up between the losers

I mean yeah, 50 Million Xbox 360's, 30 Million Xbox Live Members, and not to mention the 8 Million Kinects sold in 60 days. The New AvatarKinect, Kinect controls on Netflix and Hulu. Microsoft Surface and the new range of Tablet PC's were just dirty laundry.

Plus Microsoft being named Top Innovators of 2010.

I prefer they keep the trim edge the way it is currently. Moving the iPad 2 to the old 3G phone curve bottom doesn't make much sense.

Yes it dos, no more spinning wen you operate it laying down on a flat surface.

This design would not mesh with ANY of the current products produced by Apple. The rear camera would see little real-life use.

Last years Model looked like a big iPhone, this like a big iPod Touch. You don´t have to like it, but saiing it dos not mesh is wrong. The rear cam is important for augmented reality stuff. With Kinect, the PS Eye, the PSP Eye, the DSis Cammeras and Cellphone Cammeras asides from every PCs Webcam this is not a marked you would want to miss. It might finaly explode very soon.

like the flat back but not feeling the tapered edges.

You need them to be able to pick it up easy.

zOMG lulz, tis iz de fake!!111

Yes you ideots, it´s a mock up a third party dev. did to showcase it´s new products. It kinda spells out that it is fake in the title so stop trying to look smart wen you are obviusly not. (and now make fun of my bad english, i am german and dislex... :p )

You don't get it. Those folks are demonstrating accessories for the iPad 2 - NOT the iPad 2 itself - and to make sure that people understand that their product is designed for the next generation of iPads, they print iPad 2 on the back of the placeholder that you can see on that picture.

It just doesn't matter whether this is a real iPad 2, a prototype iPad 2, an iPad 1 in an iPad 2 case or just an empty piece of plastic that might look like the forthcoming iPad 2. It's all about an add-on product FOR the iPad 2 - or whatever Apple will be calling it.

Shall I repeat it once more or is it a bit clearer now?

Just talkin about the design:

don't like it.
I like the curves of the new iPhone4 and Macbook air etc. this looks like a step back to those iPods where you see all Fingerprints :(

I cant really see a need for me to upgrade from my current iPad, I love my current iPad and it does everything that I have wanted to do with it for almost a year now and in that year I have never once wanted to take a picture with it or need the speaker to be louder or even have a higher res. screen. I'm sure Apple will make awesome updates to the iPad in the coming months but I feel the iPad is perfect the way it is, at least for me anyway.

I don't think the mock-up looks that bad. But of course, we won't know until we see the real thing. Hopefully soon.

Am I the only one who read (and understood) the writeup?

"...said by Gopod to represent the actual appearance...". Keyword "represent"! Of course this isn't the actual next gen. iPad. It's just a mockup created for fun.

Agreed. I don't know why folks are flipping out over this design. Bottom line - it's not an Apple product.

I like the new look. If this is it.

So we are assuming the larger speaker will actually sound better? Why? Because it's bigger?

No because judging by past behavior, when Apple changes something they usually make an improvement,Mister smartypants.

Yes... Xbox and Windows 7 seems to be their bright spot. Newsweek naming them "Innovators of the year" is lame. The reason stated by Newsweek is Windows Mobile 7. Hummm.... I guess the consumers will decide. At least if they would have cited XBox Kinect as a reason it would have been more valid. Funny.... yet just about every high-tech company in the world spent all of 2010 trying to mimic, catch up, or beat Apple. Including Microsoft... the "Innovators of 2010". :)

From what I read from different Blogs, Microsofts tablet OS developments are "so-so" (mixed reviews and all speculations still) and Surface is a cool technology that they can't seem to commercialize.

Honestly, it seems that CES was very low key this year. Very few general headlines out there. If you dig, there is cool things going on, but not much is getting wide press. Seems as though nothing was a big surprise this year. Not sure?

the article clearly says it just represents the actual product. of course it's fake.

so instead of locking it up in a room with no windows and guarding it night and day as apple requests some no name company takes a prototype iPad2 to CES and the only pictures anyone gets is with it sitting upside down and nothing to see?

in 2011 when everyone has a cell phone with a camera and should be able to take a video of it being used?

Indeed the product is a fake (they claim it's intended for demo) BUT

Those photos look photoshop'ed. Check out the left edges of the device. Something else is on that table instead of the 'iPad 2'. Lighting is off too.

From what I read it was WP7 and the Kinect with the Xbox Slim that got them mentioned. I'm was actually surprised they got it to be honest.

I thought Apple with the iPhone 4 and the iPad would have gotten that award.

the new iPad *has* to include both cameras...

Are you serious??? what about all those apps that *require* a rear facing camera like Word Lens and other upcoming augmented reality apps? It won't be used *just* for taking pictures...

If they DON'T include a rear-facing camera, *that* would be a stupid move! Besides many of the competitors are including both cameras...

I like the new thinness but wish it would have kept some of the more industrial lines instead of the soft curves. That said we don't know if its real at all and you've got to trust Apple. They spend millions on R&D, if they say this is as nice as it can get right now, thats as good as it gets.

I like the new speaker grill, I bet they move the speaker mesh closer to the surface though, so they don't appear as such deep trenches.

The mockup is real, there is no photoshop. Engadget also was there and took tons of images of it.
