i am quickly loosing intrest in getting a new iPhone... I have waited for two years and apple continues to be slow to the game and not a first to the game type company like they used to be.

Sorry Apple, but it is definitely a "NO" if touch ID is on the back. I've used Android phones that are like that and it is a pain.

I'm hoping that Apple is just trying to flood the market with false specs of different variations to keep people guessing right up to the official announcement.

I'd love to see Tim Cook come out and show the fingerprint sensor working underneath a bezel-less display and say, "What? You didn't think we were going to put it on the back did you?"
This would be perfect. Even better if they show a "false" version of what it looks like first with the Touch ID on the back, then a big "NOPE" falls from above and makes that poof dust effect in Keynote that they sometimes use, and everyone has a good laugh at the expense of nearly every Android phone. You're exactly right that these are some kind of false plans to keep their competitors guessing.

I think Apple should do this more often. Just print up dozens of very authentic looking iPhone blueprints with tons of detail and slightly differences between all of them. Then leave them out in convenient areas where they will get stolen or snapped and leaked. Post a few around some web forums as well. Have a dedicated team of employee leakers putting out info that has bits of truth in it, enough to keep people coming back to them as a source, but always have parts of it be very wrong. They could even go as far as printing up some fake boards and parts and scatter them about some shady Chinese markets with a high asking price.

Don't put Touch ID on the back please.

Has anyone considered that Apple might have leaked these designs much earlier, hoping Samsung and others will think fingerprint ID on the back of a phone will be an upcoming design feature? Just because we didn't see it doesn't mean Samsung's people didn't get it earlier and base their decision for the fingerprint sensor on this.

Because that feature is getting terrible reviews right now, despite and otherwise pretty strong reception. If other companies are looking at Apple for design cues, who's to say this isn't some version of industrial espionage?

And, of course, releasing these schematics now might be Samsung's response. "Well, complain all you want but, look, Apple's going to do it too."

that rounded cutout from the back is not for touchid, its for the wireless charger, that will be automatically aligned with helps of magnets, like apple watch.

Is that a volume rocker cutout I see?

It's hard to discern with the crease in the page and uneven lighting.

i'm sure this is one of their many ideas..they might have no choice but to put it on the back
They have another choice, drop the edition for this year and use the oleds for a 5.7 inch pro version of the iphone 7s plus. Smaller bezels and chins, same touchid /homebutton on a smaller chin, upgraded cams/socs, wireless charging , better waterproof rating.
And give us an all new iphone 8 next year.

Can you elaborate? I have no issue with using Touch ID when my 7 Plus is laying on my work desk.

Seems to me a sensor on the back is less convenient, since you have to pick up the phone every time to unlock it.

I use a 4.7 inch 7 and the non mechanical home button often has to be pressed hard enough to make the phone rock back and forth, it probably isn't hard enough to cause damage to the camera lens but I wince every time I do it.

Placement on the back will be inconvenient in that case but it depends what people want. The screen to body ratio of the current iPhone models just doesn't really cut it anymore. The iPhone plus models are enormous given the screen size is only 5.5 inches.

wouldn't it make more sense design wise (and cooler) to put the touch id behind the apple design on the back. so you touch the apple on the back to log in.

I also have no problem with Touch ID on my 6+ when laying on my desk. True, if I was using just my thumb to unlock it would be a little uncomfortable, but that is why Apple lets you associate multiple fingers. I use my thumb when the phone is in my hand and my index finger on the desk. No issues at all.

Very true. However I trust Apple's long term vision, and I can't see that Touch ID on the back to compensate for no bezels is part of that vision.

You're right that 2017 is all about tiny bezels. But in some ways it's no different to previous years being all about touchscreen laptops, or flip phones before that, or phones that get smaller and smaller. Apple have been around long enough to see the ebb and flow of gimmicks, features, and the next 'new thing'.

I'm sure they will stick to their larger vision and maintain their discipline. :)

Given some of the sources that have reported it I think as good as a given that the bezels are going to be greatly reduced on the re designed model.

The 6 plus has a mechanical home button. The 7/7plus models do not.

I might be the only one but I find this acceptable. Right in the middle back of the phone is perfectly fine. I also had a Pixel with the finger print reader in the back and that did not bother me one bit. And when using it with a case I never had any problems locating it. Yes, my iPhone 7 Plus is dumb easy to unlock but I never had issues with the Pixel.

There's 4 options here:

1. Touch ID embedded in the display.
2. Touch ID on the back.
3. iPhone 7S/7S Plus only in 2017.
4. No Touch ID.

If Apple can't get Touch ID working in the display that leaves 2 realistic options. I don't see Touch ID going away to be honest. Personally the Apple logo should be Touch ID and moved to the back center.

Hopefully this is wrong. I like my button on the face. Making it a little taller and giving me a headphone jack and physical mechanical button would get me to buy.

Otherwise I'll just keep my 6S until it dies.

You're absolutely right, way too many examples of bad design in Apple's history.

Oh well, the GS8 has it on the back next to the camera which is crap as well, but the phone is still very awesome. Let's hope Apple makes a better decision regarding TouchID placement.
And also many examples of excellent design, which still included compromises. The current design and placement of the home button/touchID is a set of compromises.

People are going to have to come to grips with the reality that this is very likely what we are going to get. Each year the early parts/schematics leaks start to dribble out and people insist "they are testing multiple prototypes, this can't be the final design".

90% likely this is the final design.

Touch-ID on the back of the phone is horrible and Steve would be moving heaven & earth to make sure it didn't happen.

Tim Cook on the other hand is a bean counter who only cares about how efficient the supply chain is.... virtue signaling constantly in the USA about social issues which he goes mute on when he's kowtowing in terrible human rights countries like China.

In other words, the Apple faithful, yet again, are screwed.

Is there a reason to switch to vertical cameras or is that change simply for the sake of change? Honest question.

Is there is.. Think that VR Glasses using phones need it on landscape position.. This vertical position on portrait is a horizontal position on landscape.. This will be perfect to use the cameras with VR Glasses support for AR..

If you're gonna go that route, which is a possible of many why not integrate the touch ID sensor into the apple logo.
