iPads need wider screens... They absolutely suck for watching movies or other video content thats shot in 16:9 aspect ratio. Your 9.7" screen becomes like 7" because all you see is black bars...

Sorry but that will never happen!

4:3 aspect ratio is way better for things like Web browsing, Gaming, Reading ,Productivity(office, video editing) and lots more and 16:10 and 16:9 aspect ratio is only good for watching videos/movies and not so good anything else!!

You do realize lots of people use tablets for lot other stuff than watching videos/movies, 4:3 is becoming the new standard for tablets look at Google and Samsung they have all changed to 4:3 aspect ratios from 16:10, 16:9 on there tablets(Nexus 9, Tab S2, Tab A) because they realized now that the 4:3 ratio is a way better format for tablets then 16:10, 16:9.

So if your main use for tablet is to watch videos/movies then get a 16:10, 16:9 Android tablet or Windows tablet!!

Apple have a very good reason why they should stay with 4:3 on there Ipads rather than changing to 16:10, 16:9.

But i do think Apple should try the 3:2 aspect ratio(like on Surface Pro 3) on there ipads especailly on the rumoured 12.9 inch Ipad Pro in the future!!

Apple should release an iPad Mini and an iPad Pro.

The 9.7" tablet isn't needed when you have a 7.9" one and a 12" one.

I disagree with you completely!

There will still be a HUGE need and space for the 9.7 inch ipad even if Apple announce the 12.9 inch Ipad pro.

I want a 9.7 inch ipad, Not the 7 inch(Mini) and the 12 inch ipad because the ipad mini is too small amd the 12 inch ipad is way way to big and not that portable for many people including myself and being that big(12.9 inches) it definitely defeats the purpose of a tablet so for a lot of people the 9.7 inch ipad is the perfect size because it offers enough screen real estate and is very portable just like Ipad Mini.

So why would apple discontinue the 9.7 inch ipad???? i can't see that happening and It makes NO sense at tall!!!!

I think Apple will discontinue the Ipad mini eventually(in the next 2/3 years) because of phablets but definitely not the 9.7 inch ipad!!

Please release iPad Air 3!!!

The same!! I haven't owned a ipad yet but i really hope Apple will announce ipad Air 3 so i can buy the latest and greatest Ipad as my 1st ever ipad and i really want to get a ipad to add to my Android tablet(Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4) and 11.6 inch Windows 8 tablet(Acer Iconia W700, I5 Core) so i can have and use 3 major OSs on tablets.! :)

But if Apple don't announce the Ipad Air 3 then i will be buying the new Samaung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 because i won't buy a 1 year old tech and ipad(Ipad Air 2) and really really want to get a 4:3 ratio 9.7 inch tablet!! :)

Apple's practice of silent planned obsolescence is beginning to reveal itself. While it's made Apple the recipient of all the money... and established annual upgrade buying habits that many practice (myself included) at some point sales begin to taper as they have in the tablet sector.

Push too hard and even Apple is subject to making a mistake that will cost them...

It will be interesting to see how wrong Steve Jobs was when he hyped iPads as ushering in the Post PC Era which is now proving to be nothing more than his fantasy.

The "Post PC Era" is a bust... PC Sales are recovering and the computer continues to be a crucial tool for many of us.

My iPad Air is great for content consumption and entertainment. My Surface Pro 3 is a wonderful workhorse.

If you need something to do work with and still have all the advantages of an iPad of any size, then check out the Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

Just two weeks in with mine and I'm super happy I spent the money for this wonderful device. Microsoft did a terrific job and it shows. They have always understood business where Apple is a consumer company. They each have their specific strengths and it shows.

Consumers do well with Apple, the Enterprise relies on the expertise and experience of Microsoft.

I agree with your other points, the desktop/laptop isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The only tablet like devices that come even close to replicating the capabilities of a desktop/laptop involve keyboards and trackpads. So, erm, modified, different format laptops.

...but the planned obsolescence argument again, really? When the iPad 2 is getting iOS 9?

Sure, I'd HATE to still be using an iPad 2 now, and don't expect it to play nice with iOS 9. However, the only iPad that could be argued as obsolete is the iPad 1*. One of it's prime features at time of release was web browsing. The last time I played with my OG iPad (current owner, my gran), it failed to load about 80% of websites I attempted to access. That's obsolete, or very close to the definition of obsolete. All the other iPads are merely slow, or lacking modern features, which does not equate to obsolete.

By the same token, I still see a lot of people rocking iPhone 4's that can still do 95% of what my 6 Plus does. Only in tech forums is a >4 year old phone/tablet/computer considered obsolete. Heck, some seem to think a 2 year old device is obsolete.

*I say could be argued obsolete as this is the point where someone inevitably jumps in here and says "I still run my multi million dollar accounting business on my iPad 1!!!".

Tablets however are SO USELESS,

HAHAHA this made laugh soo hard!!

Tablets are useless for you, that's fine! But that does NOT mean they are useless for everyone, Actually for a lot of people including myself tablets are very useful and have replaced there laptop/desktops with tablets even for businesses!

You saying tablets are useless because they are not that portable compared to a smartphone and not powerful enough to do serious and heaving demading tasks like video editing to a laptop, I think you mean those netbooks that we had 3/5 years ago, they was soo underpowered even for very basic tasks like web broswing and was not that portable compared to a phone and netbooks are basically very cheap(and soo underpowered mini laptops) when you look tablets they are completely different computers!!

It is like saying bikes/bicycles are useless because the motorbike has a engine and it could start up and get going very easy and that you don't have to use the pedals to start the motorbike to get going.

Tablets are getting a lot more powerful and more advanced every year and are definitely here to stay! :)

One thing for sure, Thank god we don't have those "garbage" netbooks anymore, they were sooo sooo underpowered and soo slow even for very basic tasks like web browsing or playing flash web games it would lag very badly!!!!!

I am soo glad and happy that tablets have killed and replaced netbooks!!!!! :) :) :)

Please don't confuse third party click bait conjecture with concrete news.

Not being snarky at all, honestly, but your post reads as if it's in response to an Apple PR statement.

Sorry but what do you mean??? Re explain please!

I don't really get what you saying.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, and I don't mean to sound snarky.

Your post sounded like we'd just had word from Apple themselves saying "No iPad Air 3 this year." and you were, understandably, disappointed to hear this news. I may have misinterpreted the meaning of your post though, I'm not trolling you.

Instead, the article is just an atypical supply chain rumour from a "source" which likely has as much credibility as you or I posting a similar "report" on Reddit.

I know this is MacRumors, I wouldn't visit here if I wasn't interested in rumours, but 90%+ of these rumours are unsubstantiated speculation from some bloke in front of a computer trying to increase traffic on their site. Which is absolutely fine, some of them eventually may prove true and accurate, but in the mean time, such rumours should be treated with skepticism, and not as concrete news releases.

I don't mean you when I say this, but some of the more outlandish Apple related rumours are sometimes met with responses like "Oh god Apple, why are you doing this!".....when they've merely read the idle speculation of a neck beard/"analyst" who knows as much as you or I.

I've honestly no idea :)

The iPad Pro and Apple TV has been promised by DigiTimes every 6 months for the last couple of years (or longer in the Apple TV's case), but they're yet to appear. Accurate they are not! if they DO appear in September, I won't be crediting DigiTimes with the scoop. Predict rain long enough and you'll always be proven correct lol.

Traditional iPad is a dying product. It's too expensive, too limited and too small for productivity compared to competing devices on the market. Maybe Apple realizes this and letting it wither away in preparation for the Mac Tablet 13" running Mac OS X with iOS virtualization.

I travel a lot overseas and I find my cellular iPad to be invaluable - pop in a local Sim - good . to . go.

Glad to hear that you are happy with your choice.

The Surface Pro 3 is a terrific ultrabook, but a pretty mediocre tablet. Partially due to the hardware (I refuse to buy a tablet that contains a cooling fan), but mostly due to the continued lack of a quantity of quality touch-optimized Modern UI apps.

When I'm using my hybrid Windows devices in "tablet mode", the last thing I want is to try navigating the desktop (even in magnified mode) and desktop apps. For those Modern UI apps that DO exist, using a Surface in tablet mode is quite enjoyable. But there are still too many missing pieces for many for the Surface to be an iPad replacement.

I must add the obligatory disclaimer that when I refer to "apps" that I'm not talking about apps that are nothing more than app-ified websites but those non-trivial apps that are available on Android and iOS platforms.

Microsoft's release of Windows Bridge for iOS that assists iOS developers in porting their apps over to Windows may result in an increase in the quantity and quality of touch-optimized apps. Should that happen, it could really be something.

If I could have the Surface (non-fan version) hardware running iOS that would be ideal for me.

First... And I say this Respectfully
No need to take offense, I'm not arguing the planned obsolescence practice. It's a fact that only those who don't have in depth knowledge of Apple or the die hard supporters disagree with.

It's a brilliant internal policy that's served Apple well.

I would say you're mistaken in assuming I know nothing - I won't pretend to have any insider knowledge but am a fairly astute, critical observer of such things and have been for a very, very long time. Think 1970s.

Again, your use of the term obsolescence is misguided. You seem to be confusing Apple's almost unique marketing ability that encourages yearly upgrades amongst both people who like tech and the fashion/must have latest and greatest type people...with the idea that last years product is obsolete. Amongst the impressionable and people who live in the tech bubble, yes, last years product may seem obsolete. That's Apple marketing magic hard at work.

Meanwhile, there are huge swathes of people using years old tech that are still fit for the purpose they were bought for. If it's still fit for purpose, it's not obsolete. If you think such products are truly obsolete, you've clearly been suckered by Apple's marketing magic.

You must understand, I'm neither opposing or defending Apple here - I applaud their ability to rinse people's bank accounts frequently! Merely highlighting that people bandy around the planned obsolescence theory far too much, which to me is an admission they've fallen hook line and sinker for clever marketing.

Although most of my own Apple hw is fairly new, my 2006 MB still works fine for my mother, my 2009 Mac Mini still functions as a torrent beast/server, and multiple family members re grateful for my iPhone hand me downs, most of which work admirably - bar the iPhone 3G and iPad 1, none of these hand me downs are obsolete...just slow and boring to me, and most likely you and everyone else on this forum.

Conversely, my garage is a shrine to innumerable PC desktops going back 30 years, 95% of which are obsolete. Heck, I've got windows laptops (netbooks, yes, I went there :( from as recently as 2008 that are truly unusable and obsolete. Accordingly, whenever I hear about Apple and planned obsolence, I'm baffled considering their hw is far and away the most longest lived in my tech history.

A big shame!! :( I was waiting to buy the Ipad Air 3 when it comes out, I am not buying the Ipad Air 2 which is 1 year old tech!

Oh well so it will be the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S 9.7 for me then!! :)

can I suggest you look at last year's tab s, I honestly think this year's s2 is a downgrade, lower resolution, which is weird.. and they have moved to 4,3 ratio, so black bars all over the place or cropped Imags.. the tab s is on offer with some Web brokers for under 300 notes.. still the best mobile screen ever produced.., super amoled, looks amazing..you will go a log way to hand one to someone and they not be Impressed...

When Apple offers an operating system upgrade to their mobile devices without allowing the ability to revert back to the previous version (beyond the few day window after initial release), when the upgrade degrades performance, when a security fix is added to both the current version and newer version of the OS but requiring devices capable of update to update, could certainly justify the obsolescence claim. If you take issue with the use of the word "obsolescence" what word would you use for such behavior?
