Apple is expected to announce new iPhones and iPads over the next month or so in preparation for the holiday shopping season, but it remains unclear which iPad models in particular will be unveiled.

It is widely believed that a new iPad mini 4 will be announced, but rumors about the iPad Air 3 and so-called "iPad Pro" and their respective release dates have been inconsistent thus far.

A new report from Taiwanese blog DigiTimes offers some further details, corroborating a previous rumor that Apple is not planning an iPad Air 3 right now and focusing its efforts on the iPad mini 4.

The report claims that Apple's upstream supply chain is readying components for the fourth-generation tablet, noting that it will only have minor upgrades over the current iPad mini. Recent reports suggest the upcoming 7.9-inch tablet will likely be a slimmed down version of the iPad Air 2 and support split-view multitasking.

DigiTimes has a mixed track record at reporting on Apple's upcoming product plans, so its latest report should be treated with a proverbial grain of salt. Moreover, the more reliable Japanese blog Mac Otakara reported in July that an A9-based iPad Air 3 is still possible for 2015, so Apple's roadmap remains unclear and could change between now and the forthcoming iPhone and iPad event.

Apple has faced six consecutive quarters of declining iPad sales year-over-year as the broader tablet market continues to decline.

This makes sense. Apples biggest competitor, Samsung, is about to release their new flagship tablet, and it uses last year's Note 4 hardware.. So there's no need whatsoever for Apple to really release a new iPad this year.

Samsung is also copying Apple by making their new tablet in the two same sizes iPad uses, also the same screen resolution. They are also using the same aspect ratio now. Smart move ofc, but like I said. No need for Apple to release a new improved iPad this year.

just spitballing here, but how can widescreen be done wrong, isn't it all 16,9 ratio .. . 4,3 ratio is fine for browsing etc, but all movies are made wide screen so unless u like black bars or the edges cropped off , then 4,3 is rubbish for watching films..

16:9 is obviously better for movies and such. But 4:3 is awesome for photos, magazines (Marvel Unlimited in my case) and browsing. Plus, it's easier to hold, imo.

This makes sense. Apple is about to release iOS 9, the first OS that actually spends time on the iPad UI experience and some of it's best features will ONLY run on the iPad Air 2, last year's model.

"Split View is an iPad Air 2 exclusive feature that is a more powerful version of Slide Over, and is the fully-fledged split-screen multitasking we've been waiting for. iPad Air 2 is the only iPad that can do Split View because of the A8X processor AND 2GB RAM."

So there really is a need for Apple to release a new iPad this year.

Why? So people have another model to use all of iOS9's features on? Why not just buy an iPad Air 2 then? It's still really fast, especially compared to its competitors.

Who knows, perhaps they'll lower the price instead, making it even easier for people to upgrade.

Edit: As a tech geek I'm always all for new stuff! But in this particular case I actually see no need for them to release a new iPad at the moment, probably not even this year.

When you have a widescreen TV (standard TVs nowadays) but the film company still edits it with black bars on the top and bottom. It makes it look small, stretched, and odd.
Why have a widescreen TV if so many film companies will just ignore that and crop it further?

They don't edit the movies and put in black bars. Most movies are shot using a wider aspect ratio. Because it gives a better experience in the cinemas. There are 21:9 tv's as well. But it didn't quite catch on.

Have any effect?

That's putting it mildly. I think it will have a huge effect, and it's already started. iPhone 6 sales have already dropped off faster than in previous years, suggesting that the upgrade cycle is not being sustained. This will accelerate greatly over the 6s iteration, I fear.
They have dropped off faster but then the spike with the release of the iPhone 6 and 6+ was fulfilling a lot of pent-up demand. Once that was fulfilled, growth rates slow to more 'natural' rates. As long as the year-over-year growth is still higher than that from a year ago, I'm not too worried.

Whatever, but I'll be stopping by my local Apple store to pick up my iPad Air 3 on launch day.

If it wasn't, can I ask why would you be worried my friend, tims got a few quid in the bank.. I think they will be ok for a while..

This copying malarky propaganda really has to stop.. Its embarrassing, Samsung were the first to do mini tablets, with their tab range, then they have done a note 10 and 8.. And a 12, so basically every size covered.. Its cringing to read folk who clearly know better try and sell bs in the hope somebody believes them..

Popcir
Right! I would love to have a Finder and a Torrent Program to download stuff on my ipad. Things like popcorntime should be also installable.
Its a shame that Apple wants to take control on my device.
Popcorntime is awesome, I'm a very regular movies goer so still put good money into the film industry, but sometimes when you miss something, it's great to get it in HD for free..

The iPad mini 4 and possibly the iPhone 6s/6s Plus may also get the split view feature. I'm not sure how much the 4.7" display of the iPhone 6s will benefit from it, but I can imagine it working well on the iPad mini 4 and possibly the iPhone 6s Plus as well.

You really don't have to go back many years to see how much the quality of tv broadcasting has come on, just a 10 yr old show looks naff compared to modern stuff, especially on a modern tv..

How it looks is irrelevant.

It's the quality of the acting, music and script that counts. In that respect, old programmes generally wipe the floor with new ones.

Hmm, it depends if you're comparing like with like. I'd say the very best of TV, from The Sopranos onwards, is better than the very best of shows in the 20 years prior to it.

Of course, as with all mediums, 95% of everything is utter garbage. That's as true now as it was 30-40 years ago, yet it's easy to fall into the trap of forgetting the appalling stuff that co-existed with the classics of 40 years ago.

In my experience, the 70s and 80s were a Golden Age for tv. Then it went downhill.

Still some good stuff today. But the average quality was much higher back then.

Honestly, I'd love to upgrade from my slow and limited iPad2, but I'm gonna hang on for a little longer until I see iPad Pro becomes a reality.

It's the ram, above all else, that makes the Air 2 so much better than its predecessors.

Yeah, I know. I wish my iPad Air had 2GB. It's making me think about upgrading sooner than I normally would've. I know one guy who has a similar feeling about his 6 Plus. He's thinking about getting a 6s Plus if it comes with 2GB of RAM.

That does't make any sense to me at all, why have TVs that are already widescreen only to have the movie not fill the pre-made widescreen size? Do the cameras used for films use extra, extra widescreen? lol. ;)

Kal.

If you've still got an Air 1, I'd definitely wait for the latest and greatest.

2gb RAM is the only thing I'd change about my 6 Plus, but upgrading just for that is a bit extreme, even for me :). I always go max capacity you see, so I take a greater hit than most on resale.

A big shame!! :( I was waiting to buy the Ipad Air 3 when it comes out, I am not buying the Ipad Air 2 which is 1 year old tech!

Oh well so it will be the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S 9.7 for me then!! :)

Please don't confuse third party click bait conjecture with concrete news.

Not being snarky at all, honestly, but your post reads as if it's in response to an Apple PR statement.
