No surprise. Apple copied Samsung Galaxy phablet so it's natural to copy the Galaxy Note.

Why jump to that conclusion? Apple's latest 9.7-inch iPad offers pencil support without ProMotion so why assume the X series of iPhones will have it?

I think they would want that super smooth 120hz input on their most important product. It's not necessary when it comes to pencil support, but it makes it much much better. Also, I'm not assuming, I am hoping.

I recently discovered a note taking app called NOTABILITY..... it records audio as you type notes....and each written note is time stamped to that part of the audio. It does this flawlessly. Also, it is NOT available for windows or android devices..and has no competition for notes+audio work.
This app is the only thing keeping me on the iOS bandwagon. If it worked on the Note 9, I'd jump ship.
I talk to people and take notes...often standing in a hallway. Quickly whipping out the iphone and stylus will be awesome. As it is, I have the cumbersome aspect of digging the iPad out of it's bag when I want to take the notes.

Hopefully, this is more than a rumor!!!! Stylus YES!

Nope. Nobody wants to use a stylus with a phone. If Apple does go that way it would tell us a lot about how they really don’t understand things anymore.

I am too.
120hz Pro Motion on the iPhone X plus.

I don’t use Excel but Apples version called Numbers works fine on the iPad so does Pages, Word and even things like iMovie.

Yea they do you are correct but the iPad is a better form factor for some, for example my dad has my 2015 iPad Pro and it’s his only computer, it replaced a crappy cheap plastic Windows laptop that he was using, he’s much more happy with the iPad.

My mum also uses an iPad, my old iPad Air 2, granted it’s not for anything heavy but she doesn’t need a PC or laptop.

The overall point is that the iPad can replace a laptop/PC for some people, in fact the iPad Pro is pretty impressive, I use my Pro with apps like Affinity Photo and Pixelmator. Adobe is releasing a full version of Photoshop for the iPad next year.

Not everyone is going to be able to replace those laptop with an iPad, some people require lots of power and that’s why they buy machines like the iMac Pro, Macbook Pro and so on.

Personally I like to use both iPad Pro and Mac simply because I love MacOS it is the best OS in my opinion.

I agree. Besides, the best spreadsheet jockeys that I used to work with would never use a laptop. They always had at least two big monitors and and a powerful desktop computer. They need lots of screen real estate for huge worksheets with multiple tabs and downloaded data from corporate data bases. Using a laptop to work on these giant templates was a nightmare.

When introducing the original iPhone in 2007, Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs quipped that "nobody wants a stylus" with a smartphone, but Apple has played the semantics game in insisting that the Apple Pencil is a drawing tool. It's also been over a decade since Jobs made that comment--things change.

This is missing the point completely. The position was never "iPhones will never be usable with a stylus", but rather "our fingers will be the primary input device for iPhones". At the time, a lot of devices required a stylus for all input, and Steve was right, that kinda sucked. iPhones will always be a 'finger-first' device, but adding support for something like the Apple Pencil can add some functionality in certain areas without changing the way we primarily interact with the phone and without contradicting Apple's initial message.

Your post is a bit presumptuous. Why would *nobody* want a stylus with a phone if it’s ‘optional’?

The fact that this Rumor may be true, at least shows they’re opening up to a wider demographic for those who may appreciate something like this, even though you may not. Your statement doesn’t apply to everybody.

Yeah Apple have really lost it now. They can talk Jobs up all they want but what with this stylus, renting apps (programmed robbery), glue, so many -gates, innovating my dustbin or innovating my ass, I think the truth is option 'B'.

Good thing we have you around to let us know that nobody would want this, even though many in this same thread have said they would welcome it.

I like my MBA and plan on keeping at least one Mac in the house because I really like MacOS it’s a pleasure to use.

However I could easily just use my iPad Pro for all my computing needs.

It all depends on what you need a computer to do. For millions of people an iPad can easily replace their computer.

I’m laughing here because people ople think they know steve better.....lol
It isn’t that people think they know Jobs better, it’s simply the notion that the Apple Pencil somehow contradicts what Jobs said in 2007 which is complete nonsense.

When Jobs said who needs a stylus, he was emphasizing the multi-touch capabilities of the iPhone, which was new the at the time, and unlike other devices that utilized a screen with icons you didn’t need to poke a stick at it in order to use it. It’s still true today but it seems some people still don’t get it.

Apple always marketed the Pencil as a drawing, sketching, painting, scribble tool. They never marketed it as a replacement for navigating the phone or as a better way to navigate the phone. Those who persist in taking a position otherwise apparently never bothered to see the context of what Jobs was saying in the 2007 keynote.

Without a place inside the phone to store the stylus, this seems fairly useless.

And how, oh wise and beneficent Oracle, do you know WHAT its capabilities will or won't be?

I just look at the Pencil support for the iPad and assume it will be similar? If they could make a feature specifically for the new iPhones with similar functionality to the Notes though then that would be cool. Otherwise it’s just “there you go there’s your Pencil support, happy?”. They should offer some unique feature for it imo.

Still not makes iPad PC replacement. Still remember when this idiot called Philip Schiller laughed PC users on the stage.

Just try to do 100 cells Excel sheet on iPad it is nightmare.

Plus...any sub-300 laptop can do whatever you motioned just fine and do much more than iPad.
It depends on what you need the computer to do. I’d never need to do a ‘100 cell excel’ sheet so I wouldn’t run into that problem.

For me a sub £300 laptop running windows would be my idea of nightmare. Poor hardware, an under powered processor and loads of bloatware. That would be my idea of hell.

However as I said it depends on what you want to do and for some a £300 laptop would be far more useful than an iPad.

Case makers will be happy

They will have to have a smaller stylus, unless they plan to just briefly mention the feature, without a demo (as it would look awkward)

I’d like the pencil for taking quick notes, marking up screen shots, colouring on the go and light photo editing.

All of these things the current pencil can do.

I don’t think Apple would be willing to implement all of the features of the S pen.

Everyone quoting Steve but are vastly overlooking the “you have to get ‘em you put ‘em away you lose ‘em” part. At least the Note has the pen built in for you to slot it back in and has functionality immediately ready with their software when you pull it out which is part of its appeal in the first place.

The Palm Treo 700W from 2006 also had a silo for the stylus.

Awesome!! Can’t wait for the Samsung commercials showing people dropping their pencils and trying to figure out how to carry them and such. Then cutting to the Note and showing the stylus being slid effortlessly in and out of its holder.
Right.

From what I have read, it slips OUT a little TOO effortlessly and gets lost.
