The prime example of recent times is Mac Book AIR. It is an example of a nice concept but a poor implementation. That even after being vastly improve with the last update.

Frankly there are a number of ways in which Apple could fail here. One would be to run Mac OS/X on the machine. Another would simply be to make the device to big.

Here thickness is as much of an issue as the area of the screen. If the tablet is much thicker than 1/3" it will have acceptance problems.

Actually I wish Apple would learn from it's mistakes.

This is why Apple is a billion dollar company, and you are not.

;)

I actually like the MacBook Air. Only problem I have with it is the price. If it was normally $1299-1499, that'd be much better.

it's been a long time since we've heard anything from Shaw Wu - i'm assuming he's no longer employed as an analyst? a shame, because he was always a good guide - if he recomended that something was going to happen, then you knew for certain that it wasn't. As there haven't been any comments by him regarding the new iPhone nor the iTablet, can we assume they're both true?
:D

I don't know if it works that way, but I guess we may have to check his predictions - if it works, then his track record may be more "accurate" than we thought!

Apparently, since the increment of iphone sales has been winded down gradually, the company has to crank something out that jump into the spotlight of market to ramp up its turn over, but tablet is not hindsight. It seems Apple has been long planning for such tablet device, but perhaps due to some hardware/software immature or wrong doing, timetable to put the stuff rolling out postpone from time to time. Anyway, I still trust that the company will represent another groundbreaking product to drag people's eyeball once again like the time iphone went on sales

once the rumours stop, the whinging will start. LOL.

"why doesn't it have a camera? why doesn't it have a bigger/better camera? why can't it take SD cards? why no FM radio? why oh why oh why..."

forewarned is forearmed :)

You forgot Blu-Ray. Oh the griping and the crying. :D

Next year would be a good year for a tablet. It might possibly be a better financial time for everyone. Also, this'd give me enough time to save up the necessary moolah.
Everybody with me . . . 2010! . . . 2010!

I kind of agree with you. 2010 is indeed a better time since I don't have any spare cash to spend on a tablet after the new iPhone :D. However, if they release the tablet this year they'll have the second iteration by 2010. We all know how notorious the first iteration of Apple gadgets are.

I think unlike him/her, you, or me, when multi-billion dollar Apple hits a home run (iPod, iTunes), it's huge. When they hit a dud (Cube), it stinks from Cupertino to Timbuktu.

I think Apple has made a lot of duds (also Dalmation iMac, first gen MBA), but far more home runs (iMac, OS X, and iPhone to add to list of great moves).

If you want stinkers, look to Microsoft, but I have to admit a major weakness for Flight Simulator and X-Box. ;)

Companies are bound to have products which don't take over the market every single time, give them a break.

Actually I have a launch day iPhone that works fine, so the first iteration is not all bad. I know you are not implying that they are all bad, I'm just saying is all.

I am still on the fence with all this tablet business. I have used tablets before and they suck big time. I know fine well that Apple could make them significantly better but just struggle to see where it would fit in the product line and in everyday use. Having difficulty believing that its true one is on its way to being released.

+1 I have to agree tablets are terrible and have very limited use. Maybe apple can bring something new to the table. I was really hoping for a netbook :'(

2010 is too far away! Early June is.

They can get it out sooner but apple is apple which means they need to dump MacBooks to fair price, $699, wait for AT&T contract to end, better economy=apple will ask $1500 for a $500 laptop and intro a data month 2 month plan. All things apple can't do right now. Or could but wouldn't sell many

Two things:

1. Why don't anyone just hook up a wireless BT keyboard to your iPhone. Boom, the 2009 tablet!

2. Remind me again, why does Jonathan Ive get paid? This is just a larger iPhone - nothing new, nothing revolutionizing. :p

Obvious Tie-In

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.

Apple introduces the tablet and Mr. Cook mentions it has voice recognition. So, like I mentioned previously, you can dictact to it. It will also let you command the computer to open files, etc...

The guys says, 'iPad, open up Trailer-dot-mov'

The screen goes black, a red circular light appears and in Steve Jobs voice you hear, "I'm sorry, Timothy, I'm afraid I can't do that." :D:D:D

To see the potential of this device people need to stop thinking of this as a tablet computer. Tablets are a niche within the wider computer market. Apple doesn’t do niche markets, they do emerging mass markets.

It will not be a thick, expensive, powerful, full blown computer that lets you run Final Cut Pro with a stylus while walking to the train station. It will be a thin, relatively affordable, dedicated use, embedded type device that will pretty much do what a netbook can do, but in an uncomputery, Apple way.

Email, web, home media playback, ebook reader, Voip calls, maybe a few widgets as a “screensaver”. The iPod Touch for your home. A home media and communication device, always on, sitting in a dock, ready to pick up and use.

I guess one reason for optimising Snow Leopard might be to allow direct application to a lightweight device without having to develop a third OS. Possibly?

Hope not. I don't like the idea of having the same OS on my iPhone as I have on my computer. It would diminish the functions of my Mac in favor of the freakin' iPhone. Just fix the problems and hot up the interface with a dark theme. It would be great. Don't make it more iPhone-esque, it would ruin Mac OS X imho.

If that's the case, I can hear Ballmer calling it the "Fisher Price OS" with a cheering crowd already...

Why would I want one?

Someone please tell me why I'd want one? I'm being serious here, because it's not the same as a netbook (though maybe functions the same?), and would have to be different enough from the iPhone/iPod Touch and even a MBA. I'm just wondering if I'd be a perfect candidate: I have an iMac I mainly use, but don't often need a laptop now (at least not enough to spend $1300 for one). However, there are occasions when I'd need to do a presentation (it should be able to run Keynote), and of course do email/internet easily (I think that's a given). I'd also at least want it to be able to import photos, though I don't expect to be able to run Lightroom or Aperture full blown.

I'm just trying to figure out the market, typical user, how it would be used, because I've yet to see anyone explain that.

Is that relativly affordable as in market or as in Apple? The Air has never sold nearly as good as it could have sold. Some say, well it's the screen or the flash drive, well that's the same as the pro using EEC memoy or server CPUs. No need for it. Even then, the Air could have sold at $999 with a decent profit but that would leave all those with money to burn, with no place to go. LOL.

You are a prime candidate, as are students, people that spend their lives in meetings, doctors, people who work in inventory, teachers, salespeople etc etc.

In fact anyone who can benefit from the function of a computer that goes everywhere with them, lasts a full working day and doesn`t require them to sit down, find a flat surface, plug in or any of that bollocks that`s involved with a laptop.

A lot of people argue this is a niche product, it`s only been a niche product because past implementations have been piss poor. When it`s light enough to be held one handed, doesn`t conk out after 2 hrs, is not reliant on iffy handwriting recognition and has a vast range of easy to use software available to download over the air then it`s mass market. Oh wait you say that`s what the iPod Touch does already, sure it does but the screen size dictates the sophistication of the application and when you have a 10" screen you`ve got a device that is a step beyond the touch.
