Simple fact, if Apple claimed that the issue effected all smartphones and specifically mentioned three big competitors but were, in fact, not telling the truth, they would be recieveing letters from Lawyers demanding a retraction. Clearly they were not telling lies. RIM's reaction is shamefull in its twisted wording.

Well, I think the PR problem is Apple's but I think the technical problem is everyone's. Not one of them have said what Steve Jobs said is actually false. If Steve had lied they would have sued, no question.

Lawsuit happy americans are funny. Sometimes, there's no need to sue. Looking back in disgust is a proper answer. Why waste money on lawyers for something that is obviously bogus ?

Nokia is from Finland, RIM is from Canada. Neither country have a lawsuit prone culture.

Your conclusions are thus wrong that no lawsuit = Apple didn't distort the truth.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I've seen the video of the press conference it didn't seem like apple was pointing any fingers. The others are just being a bit defensive which is understandable they want more customers.

I'm tired of all this this Apple's 4th phone! The others have been doing this for decades! Apple made a mistake and they apologised for it and offered full refunds for those not happy.

Those who don't own an iPhone and don't intend to buy one should stop complaining

Vid is awesome. Well done Macrumors - more stories should have one attached. Hire that Taiwanese team :D!

The jobs light saber certainly has changed colour.

I can't get the antenna thing to work on the iPhone, or on any phone for that matter. I guess if you like to choke your phone while you are on it you get those results...

And as mentioned, I also didn't feel Apple was pointing fingers. Do they even know what that means? Because I am pretty sure it means to blame someone else for the problem, when they are simply showing the facts that this effects all phones. And don't tell me Nokia is from a non suing culture cause that's bull ****. Nokia has been legally battling Apple for quite a while

Apple didn't accuse their competitors' products of having similar issues, they demonstrated it. There is a big difference. I'm sure RIM, Nokia and the rest of them were rubbing their hands when the media decided to crucify Apple for this and now they're sulking because Apple took exception to being singled out for a problem thats pretty universal.

I think this problem exists with other phones but wasn't a problem until now because none of the other phone makers have the same level of mainstream coverage and rumour mill as Apple. So the iPhone 4's peculiar sensitivity to being touched at a particular point coupled with the sheer amount of publicity that Apple generate around a launch has led to the current situation.

Its something that may come back to harm Apple in future as they keep growing that all that extra publicity for the product also means extra publicity for the problems too.

Perhaps it is time to change the way the deal with the media and become a bit more open to the public about current products while staying secretive about the upcoming products.

Is it surprising RIM and Samsung wouldn't like to capitalise on any poor perception of an Apple product? Their products probably suffer worse (iPhone rated higher than them for reception didn't it?) but you couldn't expect them to say so, even if they did.

The only thing any company listens to is RETURNS. If they're giving money back, they'll fix the problem. That means going without iPhone 4 for a year to get a problem fixed, but that would be worth it in the long run. Apple shipped 20" al iMacs with dud screens for 3 years and 'got away with it'. Don't let them get away with it again.

If you're dropping calls and it's a problem for you, return the thing, rather than whine about it on the internet and DO nothing. If the quality of the product is unacceptable, return it. Hit Apple where it hurts. iPhone 5 will be so much better for it. Delayed gratification.

The fact that you can bridge the antenna makes this issue worse on the iphone. It's a flaw. Apple isn't telling the truth. Don't let that stop you, though.

The commercial lawyer at the lawfirm I work at has a theory.

America lacks sufficient government market control (or wont act on it), so companies use the system which they know they can get a result - suing.

Of course, it falls flat on its face when you consider that average american citizens are sue happy too.

There is an ancient proverb:

When in a hole, stop digging

I can understand why Apple is trying to deflect the issue (it's certainly a cheap solution) but to simply point to the competition does not take away the fact that the iPhone 4, in its current state, has a design flaw. In fact, this sounds like the sort of statement that we hear from politicians that drives us all nuts when they are being brought to book for something - suggesting that the other parties are bad does not make your own bad decision less bad. This isn't fooling anyone.

At this stage Apple probably has done about as much as they can until the design flaw is actually fixed. The best they can likely do now is bunker down and hope that this all blows over in time. Further statements like the one on Friday is unlikely to help and will probably just make matters worse.

Can we all just get free bumpers :D

Great... show to people who don't believe what Steve Jobs said :D

should have protected the antenna

This is a real shame. A little more thought into protecting the antenna from physical contact and this mess could have been avoided.

Our household (wife and son) currently have two 3gs iphones which aren't eligible for upgrade for another 8 months.

I currently use a Blackberry Bold 9700 but my contact is up in 6 months and I have been mulling over moving over to the iphone (after playing with the 3gs). The lure of the range of apps is considerable.

My problem is that I use my phone for making calls a lot and dropped calls would be totally unacceptable (my blackberry only does this if on the move and I move into a reception blackspot). I have noticed that the 3gs drops more calls than my Blackberry so I was hoping for a little improvement in this area.

I just hope that the issue can be resolved as it does seem to be a very nice looking phone.

Note the words "appear to be". They're commenting on how you might percieve the presentation while sounding as if they're making a direct statement. Had they intended to state that Apple was attempting to distrtort the public's understanding then they would have just said that. They didn't because they know Apple was not doing that and, as such, that statement would have been a lie. They're basically agreeing that what Jobs said is true.

Lets all just stop freaking out now shall we? Jobs has said his piece, nobody is suing him because they know what he said was true. I can't wait until this has all gone away so we can get back to something that resembles the real world.

From now on, you don't get to post anymore.

Good point. But Apple is down and these companies have been waiting a long time for that and have been practicing their kicking.

strangly the video made perfect sense. As for the response's of the company's cant blame them for putting out comments there products don't get half the fuss the apple stuff gets

I agreed with RIM and Nokia. When I watched the press conference I also found it a bit weak to point fingers to other manufacturers. Look at your own product and how you are going to address the issue without pointing fingers... That is not really relevant as your customers have issues with your product... Apple made design changes which are now causing issue, deal with it yourself. Presenting the actual numbers of support call (0.5%) were a good move, apparently only a small number of users do really have issues with the device, but because of the huge media coverage the issue if blown out of perspective. Even though some users might not call Apple because they think it's already a big media hype 'so Apple will know, no need to call'. Still, only 0.5% of support calls is not much...

Umm... Nokia actually has an active lawsuit against Apple for patent issues. So much for "not having a suing culture"
Business is business.

Nokia,RIM et al...

are all 100% correct.

this is an Apple issue, no one else's

dragging other companies in is just pathetic, but typically Apple.

Absolutely. If this is their attitude over this they can stick their iPhone. I've never been able to replicate this problem with any other smartphone I have either owned or demoed.

I could make this happen on some older phones I've had over the years but they never stopped the phone from functioning as much as it does with the iPhone 4. You lost bars, but not complete signals!

I've tried the "grip" with my Nokias (n-96) and I can't reproduce that problem...

I know my phone wasn't listed in apples' testing, but can anyone confirm the grip affects the listed phones, ie a test done by someone at the forum, etc?

BTW, the video was 5 stars! I had a great laugh, it sums up a lot of what I'm feeling for steve jobs atm.
