ive just downloaded the new version of tiger, 10.4.7 and my mac wont go past the grey apple screen. just hanging on the logo, nothing happening for about 1 hour. it wont let me start up with the tiger install dvd by holding down c whilst dvd in drive (has to be in external dvd dive as internal is on the blink). i havent had any problems with an OS before so any help would be greatly recieved...........
See my post above -- same thing happened to me and I had to do an archive and reinstall using system disks.

I tried booting into secure mode -- that is, doing a hard shut down, power up and holding shift when chime sounded. I held it for about 5 minutes and no go. But someone on another board said that he held for 10 minutes and eventually it booted into secure mode.

This is what I did and it worked but took forever:

!. Find system disks -- you need both.

2. Get disk one ready in drive.

3 Power up, insert disk and hold C when chime sounds. It will boot off system disk.

4. First go to disk utility and then verify your hard drive, repair if needed.

5. Then go to installer and do an archive and reinstall -- this takes a long time and you need both disks.

6. After this completes and restarts you should arrive at login screen.

7. Log in and then immediately do a repair permissions and restart.

8. Now download 10.4.7 combo updater from apple website -- Do not use software update. Go to apple website and find combo updater. Install. REstart.

9. Repair Permissions again and restart.

10. Run software update to get updates to mac programs.

11. REstart, repair permissions again and restart.

If you use OnyX, run maintenance which includes repair permisssions, rather than simply repairing permissions above.

This worked for me but took over 2 hours. Things are running fine today. No problems

thanks so much newmaccanada, couple of issues i may have. i have original tiger disks, but im pretty sure i only have 1 install disk, does that sound normal? or a problem? i also have panther install disks, of which there are 2. also my internal optical drive is faulty, is there a way to boot it off an external firewire dvd drive? it usually works for installs so im hoping. im currently at work so cant try anything until tobight but this is seriously worrying me. its such a shame as i had everything running great on 10.4.6, should have just left it. is there a way to get back to normal without the update (back to 10.4.6 without going through all installs)? thanks again for the advice..........

Most things went fine with my 15'' MBP. However, the light on the front of my computer(on the latch) doesn't turn on anymore. Any suggestions?

Sorry -- hopefully someone else can help. Just know what worked for me.

good luck

When I mimimize windows to my dock, I cannot re-open them from the dock. Some of them even multiply themselves in my dock. For example, I minimized one firefox window, but some how there are 4 of them in my dock and I cant open any of them.

My intel imac takes much longer than usual to make the 'gong!' sound during a start up and restart.

My MBP sat on the blue screen for over two hours before I held down the power button for 4 secs. Booted up fine though! No problems now and the update seems to have worked!

The new right click two finger thingy is uber-cool...
Was going to ask others if this had been included for the MBP 15" in 10.4.7, but I think thi confirms it. Been using it for a couple of weeks now, since downloading the installer-driver for it. It works well. One thing I previously had to do was disable-enable every time I rebooted, otherwise it wouldn't work. After 10.4.7 reboot, still seemed to be selected in system preferences and no need for disable-enable.

In many ways, it feels more comfortable than having a dedicated button on the trackpad, ala PC laptops.

My previously silent MB started mooing. After the PMU reset suggest by Apple, it is better now.

ByteController no longer functions properly with iTunes and the update (its set to start with iTunes, doesnt, and it doesnt even manually start)

Safari just freezes all the time after 10.4.7 along with numerous other issues. Firefox seems to work o.k., however. I noticed that using the visualizer in iTunes will freeze everything up good, too. Anyone else have this problem?

My "gong" sound on power up comes and goes as well.

im getting safari freeze too, im just glad i managed to get into my computer, i thought it was all lost.................

The fans on my mom's last rev. 12" powerbook stay on the whole time, they never switch off, even when it is not warm!

After I installed 10.4.7 on my Titanium 1000 17" powerbook, Software update would let me know there were software updates, and wouldn't show them in the window. Installing updates using software updater is impossible now. I have to go to the apple support site now to find out which updates are available and download them. At least it tells me how many updates there are.

It installed great on my iBook G4 but I tried to install it on my 17" intel iMac and it hung just before the starting mac os x and I waited several hours and finally gave up and reinstalled the mac os x without any data loss. I don't suggest upgrading if you have an intel iMac.

since nothing else helped I did the 2.5 hour reinstall of the OS. Too bad one can't rely on updates of Mac OS. I know most people are probably happy with theirs and think this is whining, however it cost me probably 6 hours overall to go through this, hence I'm disappointed. There were other troubles caused presumably by 10.4.7 (since those were new to me): my MBP did freeze twice in the last 4 days, usually while doing simple browsing with Safari. Plus once the keyboard and mouse stopped working and only a PRAM reset saved me.

To wrap up, unless someone very much needs one of the new features of 10.4.7, I would wait until it has been patched up a couple of times.

What exactly has been fixed about this....

- ensuring icons are spaced correctly when viewed on desktop

It wasn't broken before, and the snap to grid is still annoying. Icons not moving to where I drag them. They spring back to where it was originally placed.

Have to deselect it then select, drag for it to go where you want.
