Still using my iPad 1 on a daily basis and loving it. I like to get at least 3 years from any tech product, so next year I'll upgrade. How huge will that be? ;)

It certainly helps that Apple continued providing iOS updates, otherwise I may have been tempted.

I've been trying to hold to my iPad 1 but it's getting worse everyday.
Before iOS5,it was all good but when I installed iOS 5.1,it's become notably slower.random crashes in Safari and other apps and the OS itself isn't as smooth as before. So I'll probably get an iPad 3,but I'm waiting to see if newer OS updates will improve anything.

Still using my 1. I will probably upgrade if I can save the cash up... But it still does everything I want/need it to do, so no rush!

Apparently my inability to upgrade to 5 has been a good thing!

It sounds like Apple is making hardware for stupid users. If we can be smart enough to manage a few folders with files in it then it is Apple Romper room!
Apples age old mantra of "It Just Works" a saying that is revered by the Mac faithful in a near religious way, is at the core of all things iOS.

Now having morphed into a mass market consumer electronics company, Apples all about profit & bragging rights first. The path to maximum profit taking leads right through the uneducated consumer.

Mass market retailing is a numbers game where the company removes any challenge of having to read or learn. Just pickup & use their toys. That's the new Apple.

An iPad really cannot be compared to a laptop its just not that useful. I love my iPad 1 and still use it daily and am holding out for the 4. The iPad is an awesome media consumption device and really cannot replace a laptop. While there is a lot that the iPads can do, they really aren't a viable replacement for a laptop, typing papers on it is annoying and you can't really run multiple things at once and click around.

Nope. They had me at "retina". No regrets here, my friend. :) I was happy to trade in my OG iPad for the "new" one.

I find it hilarious that so many forget that Mac with its GUI was considered a toy-for-the-masses-without-brain just as iOS is now as was Apple II, etc.

Apple, from its very first product the 8bit Apple computer, has always been a company that caters to the mass market with simplified and more "human" interface. That's not the "new" Apple, Apple has always been focusing on that.

I am still happy with with my original iPad. I just got the front glass and back case replaced my Squaretrade as well, so that is cool. I am patient and don't mind it being slower than the newer models, and I have an iPhone 4S to play most of the latest games on.
I also was happy with my original iPhone until the 4th model was released as well.

So when the ipad was first released you thought 'i'll hold out until they bring out a 3rd gen model'?!

hate to break it to you but there are people out there who do fall into this category.

one of the VPs where i work had tried the ipad1 - thought it was interesting but very limited. then tried the ipad2 - thought the platform had matured a little more but was not impressed enough to buy. bought the ipad3 a couple of weeks ago.

this person is making >150K a year so lack of money was never the problem.

me...i've got an ipad2 and will be waiting for the ipad4 to come out before i upgrade. the ipad4 will be what the ipad3 should have been with all the ipad3 drawbacks worked out.

I didn't get the iPad 2 because I wanted retina, but now I don't want a device that is only half-made.

Wow, every time you upgrade you must get the feeling you've woken up in the distant future.

I've had all three.

If you are happy with your iPad 1 you should stick it out. When I sold my 2 about a month before the 3 came out I was using an iPad 1 in place of it. It was painful to be honest, after you get used to the speed and memory of iPad 2 it is really hard to go back.

iPad 3 is pretty much all about the screen, and seriously, it will make all other screens look bad. My Dell Ultrasharp monitor looks terrible now, I have to sit further back to read anything on it as the text looks so pixelated in comparison. Same with the old iPads. My 11" Macbook Air is fine, but it has a bit higher DPI than most desktop monitors.

But just never touch an iPad 2 or 3 and you'll make it till next year :D Then the new iPad will blow you away.

Of course, there will probably be some major enhancements to iOS for the iPad this coming summer, so we'll see. I am guessing the iPad 1 will fall majorly behind in performance (If it gets the upgrade, which is still up in the air. If it is like iPhones than it is probably EOL. But I feel iPad should have a bit longer life than an iPhone so we'll see...)

It's a typical question, and a simple answer to it. If you're happy with your iPad 1, go ahead and keep it. If not, iPad 3 is a great upgrade. Yes, I've done it and very happy with it, which doesn't mean you should, either, though.

Of course, iPad 4 will be better and 5 will be even better, although there NEVER will be a perfect edition that everyone is dreaming of. It's all about what you want and if the current offering is good eough for you, which only YOU can answer for you; certainly not some strangers from a forum who doesn't really care.

Admittedly my use case is reasonably uncommon, but my iPad 1 has replaced my laptop. I SSH into servers ( using Prompt ), write documentation ( Pages ), and produce diagrams ( OmniGraffle). I use a Compass for a stand, and an Apple BT keyboard. The fact it doesn't run multiple things at once - in the OSX sense - is part of the attraction. As I said, my usage isn't that normal ( although I'm not the only one ), but it can be done.

None of what I do requires tons of power, so I'm happy enough holding out for the next revision, mainly in the hopes that storage will be cheap enough that 128GB will be offered ( I do like to have music playing to drown out the noise of servers, and iCloud isn't a viable option.... ).

I have had the 2 and 3 and every iPhone since the 3G, I just skipped the two gen ones. The iPhone practically pays for itself and the iPad, is about half the price for a year of use.

At least these products even unsubsidized have strong resale.

This was the upgrade to get.... The display will not change for a while most likely. No need to for probably 3-4 years. Maybe just the tech will change, but not the resolution for quite some time if the aspect ratio stays the same.

My girlfriend has the 2 and once you use and witness the 3's display compared to the 2's...there is no going back for me. Night and day difference. The display of the iPad2 looks so washed out, pixelated and just blurry compared to the 3. No comparison whatsoever to 2048 X 1536.

There is really no need to wait. There is already a steady stream of apps made for or being updated to retina resolution. This was a massive upgrade to the iPad....the thing you touch and see... It's incredibly gorgeous.

Do your eyes a favor...get the 3.

I have owned 1,2, and 3, and will most likely own the 4 as well. Each upgrade has been well worth it for me. :D

Did you read this in a book?

Only Apples toys fit this mold of being user friendly (iphone, ipod, ipad). It took Apple years to get to those devices.

There is nothing user friendly about OSX.

Now you could argue that many Application on the Mac platform are user friendly. I would agree with that statement.
