I thought about this myself but I had safari crash one to many times and it was too slow compared to the other models. I decided to upgrade only to the ipad 2 because I wanted something thinner and lighter while still being speedy and the new ipad didn't offer me that. I can still survive without a retina.

Exactly what I did; opt'd for iPad 2.

the only thing i see on ipad 4 are:
1. size
2. better camera
3.high capacity storage size (maybe)
4.better chip and ram

every basic important thing is already on ipad 3. i don't think its worth the wait if you have ipad1 or if you don't have an ipad yet.

New process technologies are weighed up against risk and cost. Sticking to the existing tech means less risk and more cost. It cost Apple 62% more to include the current A5X over the A5 processor. They must have decided to be able to produce and sell 3 million units on the launch weekend, thats was the tech to go for.

Ive also followed ATI & Nvidia for long enought to see how catastrophic decisions to go for over eager unready process technologies were.

LTE is a stop gap technology. True 4G tech is at least 100Mbps. The rest of the world is trialing this tech but its at least another 3-4 yrs before major world wide roll out. Apple have until iPad 6 or 7 to have a world wide chip ready.

32nm is definitely not unready.

I've been trying to hold to my iPad 1 but it's getting worse everyday.
Before iOS5,it was all good but when I installed iOS 5.1,it's become notably slower.random crashes in Safari and other apps and the OS itself isn't as smooth as before. So I'll probably get an iPad 3,but I'm waiting to see if newer OS updates will improve anything.

I was having the same issue as you. I finally restored the iPad and set it up as a new iPad. It now runs noticeably faster, smoother, and no more Safari crashes.

After seeing how poorly my iPad 1 turned out, I am now holding out for the new Acer Transformer to be released. I will NEVER buy an iPad again.

Why would you buy an apple product again when you have personally seen how they screw over their customers? If Apple was good, they would allow people to downgrade their OS.

If it hadn't been for iOS5, I probably would have stuck with the iPad 1. I think the hardware is [still] amazing and my only regret is that they didn't give it 512MB RAM out the gate.

Unfortunately, the day I went to iOS5 was the day the iPad went from a fantastic device to a fantastic-but-slow-and-buggy device; it was never the same again. The new tablet is much, much faster.

Nuts

For the life of me I cannot think of a reason to "upgrade". I find no fault/problem with my 32GB WiFi iPad. I read magazines, email and PDF files. What will the iPad 3 bring?

I really can't see anybody being happy with a 1 now....I've head all three, and the latest incarnation blows the others away...Using a 1 now would not be a pleasant experience at all.

you don't think the DESIGN could change drastically ? Thats what i'm waiting for. Aside from the basic guts, i want an overhaul of the exterior so amazing that I have to have it. that's why i gave my 1st generation to my mom and am patiently waiting

The fact you can't get a a product name right tells me all I need to know.... Hint, Acer make the Iconia, Asus the Transformer....

I think anyone with an Android tablet will tell you what it's like to be screwed over....

Still got my original iPad 1 which I purchased on day 1 (actually the second iPad sold at my local Apple Store). So far I just haven't seen any compelling reason to upgrade. Now if Apple comes out with a 7" iPad I will probably upgrade then and give my iPad 1 to my wife. I really would like just a little smaller form factor. Short of that though, I'll probably just wait and see what the iPad 4 has to offer. I know just having an improved screen isn't reason enough for me to upgrade.

Specifically what functions do you need?

From my perspective the tablet is fully mature in it's current form. While there's small improvements that can be done, overall Apples done a very good job with the current model.

Remember, despite the hype, there's only so much that can be done with a tablet.

A tablet's not intended to replace a desktop, or really even a laptop, although for some it can. I understand if a tablet just isn't for you, but your reasoning is sort of like saying I'm not eating pork until they make it taste like chicken.:D

Oh, and the iPad 1 isn't remotely DOA as some of the "latest is the only viable option" crowd wants to assert. It just depends on one's individual needs. My mother is now using my iPad 1 and it's going to more than suit her very modest needs, and was serving my own more advanced needs just fine as well until I upgraded.

Anyone holding on to the original through choice must be holding on to it for sentimental reasons. I know someone who still uses an ancient original iPhone lfor that reason. Even a refurbed iPad 2 would cost very little in exchange for an iPad 1.

iPad 3 however will have a monumental life assuming some future iOS update doesn't retard it. 5 yrs from now I can see apps being developed that fly on it. Going back to the original topic. I could live with the bulk and weight of the iPad but the second rate safari performance kills it for me. iPad 2 was such a vas improvement in performance, even iPad 3 only matches it. iPad 1 was a nice first attempt. iPad 2 really nailed it and iPad 3 took it to the next level.

This post sounds like it was written by the ultimate consumer.

Gotta have the latest, even though there's nothing wrong with what I have.

Time to spend, spend, spend.

If technology becomes faster, cheaper and more useful each year what sense does it make to hold onto something for irrational reasons. If you find the iPad 1 say, slow, unreliable and not such a pleasure to use any more, given the choice of a cheap upgrade to a used iPad 2 assuming the money wasn't a problem, what sense would it make not to do so? Isn't your time and personal enjoyment worth a penny?

Yes, I will agree that was a poor error. I guess perhaps the biggest gripe about the tablet is its lengthy name. I meant the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Infinity. Also, what do you mean with the last point? I have an Android phone, and it has never had any issues, unlike my iPad.

Why not just admit you're addicted to the latest?

I am.

But that doesn't mean that I should place my values on others.

I work in the hi tech arena as an engineer, whos work is resource intense, requiring the most computing power available. I'm also a multi-platformist that likes choices, variety, and the latest in tech on several mobile & destop platforms & related Computers & Smartphones.

Isn't your time and personal enjoyment worth a penny?
Sure, except for the fact that $500 dollars doesn't just fall out of the tree every time a new iPad comes. I would rather use that money for something else, then to get a slightly faster tablet that realistically does the same thing as my old unit.

Yep still on iPad 1 and happy.

Had hoped for a iPad 3 with 128GB flash. Despite iCloud 64GB is nothing. My music library alone eats that up easily..... Lets not talk about movies and other stuff.

I am still using my ipad 1 and holding out for the iPad4. I bought the 2 at launch for my wife. Bought the new iPad last month and 4G (especially unlimited :D) and retina was awesome. Battery took longer to charge but it was fine with me. However, I can't stand the yellowish hue so I ended up returning it after 2 weeks. Yes, I missed it especially every time after the 1 crashed. Finally decided to take the plunge since someone posted the screen will get better after burn-in. Then I won the new iPad in a raffle drawing :D but it was just a wifi version. So I am holding out for the 4 while passing the 2 to my kid and 3 to my wife.

upgraded the 1 to 5.1 fixes a lot of crashes so its still good for me. I think the 4 is going to be lighter or has longer battery life.
Or the extended battery life version of the 2

Sold my iPad 1 yesterday and now I'm ready to get the new one. I just wanted the LTE option but I will keep the new one for at least 3 years.

Waiting for the 4 only because it'll be better than the 3 is a never-ending slippery slope. So anyone holding out for the 4 is probably going to still be holding out for the 10. You can't really wait for the latest and greatest because there will always be something "later and greater". If you're just happy with the 1, nothing wrong with that either.

But my father taught me to enjoy life now while you can. The 3 had the improvements that mattered to me, so I sprung for it, just as the 2 was the opposite, I didn't need its improvements so I bought the 1.

Still on iPad 2. Will definitely wait to get an upgraded iPad until there are more new features. the retina display sounds awesome but not something I would notice too much.

Still have my iPad 1, I use it for doing voiceover work. Not for recording, but for my scripts. I have a special holder that fits on a mic stand and I read from it rather than printing out a paper version. I get the copy from my agent, convert it to PDF if its not already in that format and save it to Drop Box. I open it on the iPad and pull it into iAnnotate for highlighting and notes, fire up ProTools and away I go. I also have the iPad 3 and love it. I watch HBO GO movies and programs in HD among other things. Yeah, good stuff. :D
