The problem is 90Hz is the max for AMOLED’s. Don’t know if the technology is there yet for 120Hz this early.

Yes although it may have Apple Pencil support it WILL NOT have 120Hz as well. One does not automatically mean the other. 120Hz isn't possible with OLED currently, iPad Pro has LCD.

That’s not true.
There are oled with 120hz refresh rates.

I know lg is currently offering a 4.3 inch amoled display with 120hz refresh rate, they demoed it in May.

We’ll that's great news! A 120Hz panel would be amazing.

So far all indications are that it will be a pretty boring upgrade for the 5.8" X this year. A12 chip, some camera improvements, maybe some FaceTime improvements (?) Unless they pull a surprise out of the hat, sounds like it's not a compelling reason to upgrade from the 2017 X.

To each their own.

A12- first 7nm chip
Intel xmm 7560
Better Camera
Bigger better display
Bigger battery.
More ram
512gb of storage
4x4 MIMO
Possibly dual sim.

I’m upgrading to the iPhone X plus from an iPhone X.

What else would you expect? Apple is not going to overhaul the entire phone process in just one year. For those who upgraded last year, may not have a reason upgrade this year. Quite a few members were holding off to upgrading to see what the second generation iPhone would be like, just for the sake of maturity with technical improvements.

Exactly why I waited, now this year I'll get an improved model.

I don’t agree that you’re saying wireless charging is a ‘gimmick’, as maybe there is a more of an appropriate term that you just don’t find that technology useful perhaps. Anyways, you’re paying for a convenience factor with wireless charging, that’s really it. But I certainly think it serves it’s purpose just in terms of ease-of-use, but obviously opinions vary.
Well, I have to admit - I’m also considering the design aspect here: With wireless charging (and AirPower!) I could reduce the number of iDevice cables lying or dangling around by 2/3! I’m really looking forward to tidy up the small side table dedicated to our electronic devices.

Sure, I could build some construction to (partially) hide the cables or make them retractable or something, but I simply have other priorities for spending my spare time.

Convenience then is more of a nice extra for me.

I’ve upgraded the last four years but this year I’m going to spare the upgrade and just probably upgrade my watch to S4.

Significant updates happen every 2 years. Everyone should know this by now.
Guess it depends on how you define "signficant". In former times, outer design has changed significantly every two years ("non-S") and internal saw technology every two years in the "s-years".

However, while that distinction was already difficult to argue earlier, by now Apple managed to blur the lines completely. At least for technical changes / improvements.

Therefore it is now - more than ever - heavily dependent on the individual user's expectation whether a change is significant or not.

In other words: There is no "common knowledge" (as you imply it) anymore ...

Not really true anymore.

2014 - significant overhaul of the design
2015 - minor refresh
2016 - minor refresh marketed as all new
2017 - minor refresh alongside all new model
2018 - minor refresh alongside two all new models

That former pattern of change years and ‘s’ years isn’t there anymore. I’d say it’s highly likely that 2019 and 2020 will both be minor refreshes for all three models.

This is exactly my point...couldn't have said it better! And to clarify, my post was about the 5.8" phone. For those who were waiting for the larger phone then yes of course this will be a significant change. For a like to like (aka "s") upgrade it doesn't really look like there will be any major feature enhancements that would make one want to upgrade from an X. Hopefully Apple will surprise us.

Well, for those of us not planning on upgrading to the XS Plus at least there's the Apple Watch that looks exciting this year!

I'm curious to know what the big exclusive Xs feature will be (aside from more powerful/faster hardware and tweaked camera) to make the device standout from the X.

3GS and autofocus camera and voice control (hardware)
4S had Siri (arguably a software feature)
5S had '64-bit' support and TouchID, 6S had 3D touch, the tapic engine
8 (arguably the 7S) had true tone display and wireless charging.

So far from the leaks it doesn't look like there will be any hardware differentiating feature over the X (apart from the larger model) - could be something unexpected or a software-exclusive feature. If it's software-exclusive, no doubt X owners will feel agreeved it is being held back from them.

I'd like to see a ProMotion display (which I think is a feature dependent upon a 120 Hz display but not a function of a 120 Hz display itself, meaning it's possible to have a 120 Hz display without ProMotion) but I bet that will be 2019.

Not many changes coming to the XS
Apple said iOS 12 needs to be an updated and polished software so that’s where they concentrated their efforts
Also Tim Cook has doubled down on secrecy so not many leaks this year

I would disagree. One of the largest leaks just derived from Apple itself with two pictures of the iPhones in the newest colors. I would say that’s a fairly *large* leak, not to mention the Apple Watch that just leaked as well for the Series 4. Now, rather how the leaks happened or not, is to be discovered, but I would say those are fairly compromising leak(s) no matter how you look at this, and Tim Cook likely is not happy about it.

The reason we haven’t seen a lot of hardware component leaks this year, is because there’s nothing to see, as there isn’t going to be a lot of physical changes internally or externally for the 2018 iPhone X.

After all the un inspiring releases, or releases that were WAY overpriced, or not needed, or removed things I had come to depend on or complete lack of releases, I no longer care that much. I guess by now I have become pretty jaded.
