Have had my 42mm Sport SG a week and like it so much I have thought about "upgrading". However, after about 5 min of thought, I'm sticking to Sport;

-I bought the sport instead of a dedicated GPS running watch. I find the Apple watch a much better value, and more useful even if take as a fitness watch alone (ability to control music while working out, track other activities besides running, see if a text is important during long runs, fitness tracker, etc). Going up to the next level would not have me think of it as good a value.
-I really like the black watch. I've been wearing a black chronograph sport watch (Michael Kors by Fossil) for 5+ years. I like it. It is a personal thing. The only current way to buy the black SS is w/the link band putting it at $1,100. I like the link band, (my MK had a link band) but not at that cost. And the sport band would be a requirement for workouts and runs, so $1,150 + the $20 extra they charge for Apple Care+. That is just too much, for me at this point and time.
-ok, as much as I love the watch, it is gen 1. And I do believe the next generation will have GPS (or perhaps one version will). So I'll want to upgrade. No, obviously for me, no GPS is not a deal breaker, but it is a major feature I'd like to have. So if the next one has it, i will get for sure.

And as for the watch itself. I love it! Want another band (looking at you blue leather loop), but love the watch.

I own a 42mm SG Sport and am delighted with it. I didn't "cheap out" as money was in no way a part of my decision. In fact, I tried on the 42mm SS first with NO intent of purchasing the sport version, until I tried on the SG sport and immediately changed my mind as it was much lighter and the subtleness of the grey aluminum appealed to me over the intense shine of the SS. Fuethmore, I believe that the benefits of the sapphire face have been overblown. Add to the fact that the SS is a fingerprint magnet which attracts micro scratches easily. At the end of the day, it's a personal decision, nothing more. I have no regrets purchasing the sport over the SS.

Finaly, keep in mind that this will not become an heirloom that you will be passing down to your children. It is wearable tech first and jewelry second. A Rolex will do its intended job 20 years from now, the same can't be said about an Apple Watch...

Had I been able to buy the stainless space grey for $1,049 instead of the $1,389
as listed on the Canadian store, I might have been swayed to upgrade. I'm not a fan of the shiny silver look. I bought mostly because of what it has the potential to do in the future, not so much as a fashion piece, so it is really hard for me to justify the cost difference just yet. Especially since I wouldn't be able to wear it at work. Just too much chance of it getting smashed, regardless of what it is made of. But then since I have yet to see one in person, as there is no Apple store in this province at all, I'm buying it sight unseen anyways, so it's just like buying a pig in a poke, again hard to justify the extra cost. If I determine it is not going to stand up to actual usage, I won't feel as put out as if I had spent 3 times as much!

Go try them on, that's the only way you'll know. I'm happy with my sport and a lot of folks are. Just as many are happy with their SS models. Some were not happy with one and switched to the other. I tried them both on and went with the Sport.

42 mm SG for 10 days now and it's really nice and haven't noticed and scratching or other issues. I am sure it will wear slowly just like the rest of my watches. I like the sport band once it's on my wrist. Getting it on the wrist takes a little getting used to.

It does take some getting used to. I have hairy wrists, so tucking the tail of the band is actually quite painful as it grabs the hairs. Of all the bands Apple could have done a better job designing the sport.

Ditto, but that's to be expected with rubber products. Still very comfy and lightweight.

Exactly my thoughts. On all of this.

Except that it could have easily been avoided by tucking the tail on the outside of the band, or using magnets like the leather/milanese loop bands. Not a huge complaint, but it is an avoidable problem.

I love my sport! I saw the SS in the store yesterday and I am so glad I didn't go that route. The sport is lightweight and comfortable. Money had no influence on my decision either. But has been great for walking, the gym and hiking.

I don't have any scratches on it but if you are worried, then I'd get applecare

Money was never an issue. So I didn't "cheap out"
My reasons for going with the space grey sport is that I didn't like the shiny SS. And I loved the look of the space grey. And finally as a golfer. The lighter watch was better for me. If I wore watches regularly I guess it wouldn't make a difference. But I wore the original pebble for 2 years. And as soon as I tried the SS. I felt the weight difference.
For the dress up occasions. I would love to wear the space black SS. But I just can't justify paying $1100 for a watch that will be outdated probably in a year or two.
At the end. It was all about personal taste. So people need to stop saying that sport version is "cheap out"

But tucking the tail on the outside would defeat the purpose of being the sport band. The reason why they tucked it is because like the classic buckle. The tail always tend to come out of the loop which can be annoying when you're playing a sport.

Thus the suggestion of magnets instead. Another button on the end of the tail would have been viable too.

Does the stainless steel version remind anyone else of a early iphone/iPod? I just prefer the aluminum look. To each their own. Enjoy those watches!

So like many others I'm still waiting for my SG sports watch.

The wait and regular visits to the Apple Store has got me thinking I may as well upgrade to the SS version.

Has anybody who has received their Sport model regretted not paying the extra for the SS watch and if so why?

Cheers in advance for any help!

I don't know if my opinion will do you any good after all the feedback you've already received, but I actually ordered the Sport as a compromise. I originally intended to order the SS with Link band. I'm going to be deployed for a good portion of the next year, so I got the sport instead of spending the extra for the link. I'm now very happy with my sport. I think it looks great, I've been complimented often while wearing it, I don't think it looks cheap, and it's held up very well against a lot of rough work, everything from yard work to the gun range. I have no scratches on the case or the screen, in spite of some pretty rough use.

Get what makes you happy and what you can afford, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the sport.

He can't run faster or jump higher because of those 20 grams! Haha

I could probably run as fast with my nighthawk (that weighs like 38 pounds) on but im sure it would be less comfortable.

The SS is definitely more versatile. It'd be tough to dress up the sport for a night on the town.

I'm glad that the Sports owners are happy with their choice
For me the minimum a watch has to have is stainless steel and sapphire screen
I've been too spoilt with quality watches

That's funny, the watch I was wearing when I tried on a SS in store was way heavier than the SS and I was surprised by how light it seemed. But I wasn't comparing it to a Pebble, so I'm sure it must have seemed significant. Also, the watch I was wearing was in no way one that could be worn for an active lifestyle, it just happened to be what I was wearing that night.

That being said, I love the sport and I don't think it's "cheating out" either. I think it looks great. I think it's grown on me to the point that I prefer it to the SS.

If I was buying a traditional watch it would need to be stainless steel or titanium, with a sapphire crystal. I consider the Apple Watch to be a wrist-worn computer/gadget, so my standards for it are different. Also traditional watches don't tend to be made of anodised aluminium, and don't get to have ion x glass available.

I think this is a good point. I was not a watch wearer before getting a Pebble and have always been uncomfortable wearing something on my wrist. I appreciate the "can barely feel it" weight of the sport. I think someone used to the weight of a watch on their wrist would not feel the same way.
