That's not entirely true though, and what are you gonna do when the Fedex says sorry the shipper has restrictions on this, show them this chat dialogue?
Every year I've tried things with the shipper it's been heavily restricted by the shipper.
Soo...I called yesterday (1.5hr hold time) and gave them the address update. The guy said he updated it and that I would receive an email update in 24-48hrs, and made it sound like it would update on my "Orders" page.
Well, 24hrs+ later, no email, no update on the "Orders" page, so I called again today (1.5hr hold time), explained the situation, and the guy said the updated shipping address was in their system, still needs to be updated by their "back-end" or something, and that I wouldn't receive an email confirmation. He also made it sound like the "Orders" page wouldn't be updated. BUT, he said the phones would ship to the updated address that I gave them.
I mean, he said he saw the updated address so I believe him, I just find it odd that I'm not going to get any confirmation (so it seems). Anyone else had the same experience?
Nope, mine was instantly updated, as he said he changed the address I refreshed my Orders and it was showing, as well as a confirmation email.

I was told the exact same thing, and 24 hours later I have not received an email nor has the address been changed. Considering calling back again.
I got thru this morning to Apple, after 1hr 44min on hold, not too bad considering the results. The Apple Rep was amazing! I said, "could I change my shipping address" she replied, "Absolutely!" I asked if a change would delay shipping, ect...her reply, "of course not". She was so helpful, friendly, happy and knew really what she was doing. It took about 3-4 minutes to change and re-route two different orders. As soon as I got off the phone, I received a confirmation e:mail from Apple showing the address delivery change. I logged in to my Apple account and the address delivery change was already updated there as well. Very impressed with the service I received, albeit, with millions of phone calls, the hold times are long, but the results were worth it.
There is a thread on here with plenty of successful reports about having their iphone 5s preorder phones redirected by UPS/Fedex once shipped to new address or a local facility for pickup, so I'm not worried about it and going that route. Of course, it costs a little $ to do that.. And updating directly with apple is free, so to each their own.
Smooth as silk! 40 minutes on hold this morning and then a very friendly csr took care of it for me. She had to go through the "back end" which she said she did "like 1,000 times yesterday". Her supervisors told her to quote 24-48 hours before I would see it updated when I logged in but that everything was good and that I would receive my phone on Sept. 19th. Yay!!!
To everyone that would rather not sit on hold forever: next time, change your billing address on your carrier account before ordering.
