I just picked up the XS and briefly considered the XR... After playing with both in store, the size was the deciding factor for me. I am not into the ginormous phones and the XS just felt night and day better in hand..

The XR is a nice phone and you can save some cash by getting it but for me, it came down to size...
After days of comparing the XS and XR that is where I have landed as well. The XR is awesome. I think the criticism of the screen is way overblown. The only quirk I had with the screen was that text in apps like Safari is pretty small and you have to use Zoomed mode to make the text size be close to the XS (normal IMO).

I really like the XR. I LOVE the battery life of the XR. But after 6 months of knowing I wanted to go smaller than my 8+ I don’t think the XR is small ‘enough’. They are so close in screen size that the extra size and weight of the XR isn’t worth it to me.. not when the XS feels perfect in-hand. The XR has just that little bit of ‘extra’ size that requires some occasional manipulation to do what I want to do.

IMO, you cannot go wrong with either but I am going XS.

Played with one in the Apple store last week. Its a great device. If I was coming from the 7 or 8+ then yeah I would probably jump to the XR. But for me..the thicker bezels, less premium feel, no 3D touch and LCD display makes it a no go for me as someone who's used the X for almost a year. It would feel like a downgrade.

Huh? The Note 8 is SAMOLED, which is basically the same as the OLED screen on the iPhone X. Again, it really just doesn't matter in real life.

Duh ? I said the only reason why I got an iPhone is because of the screen. Otherwise I would kept my Note 8 if the iPhone kept their lcd displays. oled is superior and does matter

I would have to compare in person. However, I would only spend the money if I needed the additional bands of the Xr, such as if I decided to go to T-Mobile.
[doublepost=1541370253][/doublepost]I don't look at either the 7+ or the X screen and think either is bad. The difference to me was the overall smaller size of the X fit me better. And like not having the bigger bezels on the X.

The 7 plus has a 1080p screen. The XR has around a 790p screen ( around there I think ) or at least a 720p+ screen with a slighter higher resolution then the 8. I was ok with the 720+ screen on the 7 but with a 6.1 inch screen no so much. At the price I would of been ok with a 1080p screen

I don’t understand why you’re so hung up on convincing people not comvunced OLED is the best

Pwm is a big deal to some they can’t look at it
As is tint shift / uniformity on average
As is subpixel layout being less ppi than advertised so people don’t care about resolution

I agree with you
I think burn in concerns are overblown, tho

But the added width size and scaling add to the appeal of Xr as well. And True Tone that isn’t nasty most of the time

Different strokes. Why is that a big deal? Your x/xs/max isn’t crap just because people like the Xr

I couldn’t care less if people like the XR . Good for them but doesn’t mean the screen still sucks. It’s an inferior technology to lower the price of the iPhone

But people who think from their experience that the screen isnt garbage... means they dont think its garbage

It’s like convincing a non audiophile that doesn’t have planar cans and a solid DAC/amp rig, that a certain master rip of a FLAC sounds better and puts to shame an iTunes download of an album on consumer Midgrade earbuds

It’s still factually inferior. Using your ear pods or air pods sounds like crap even though most people don’t care. Still the truth though. Heck even my Bowers and Wilkins PX that cost $400 which sounds great for what it is but still is inferior to any wired headset

Go look at the XR in store. Viewing the same websites I had a hard time telling the difference compared to the XS I have. I was surprised how close they are and the XR doesn’t feel as bad to use as the XS Max. That said I feel the bigger screen size gives no benefit over XS either and physically it’s a bit bigger thanks to the larger bezels.

Thank you for posting this. I got the XR and haven’t opened box yet lol.
I only played with the store displays and at that time thought XR was the one.
But then I started reading more and more reviews and opinions, and coming from 6s I got doubts, if this was the right decision for the XR.
My main concern would be the size of the XR. I held the XS in store and it was fitting so nicely in hand. Another thing was how long the battery will last and going with only 64GB (my 6s has 64GB and never was an issue though).
And of course the price!

Today will be deciding day for me on which one to choose.

I actually bought a new X in October through Best Buy. I had initially purchased the Max on launch day but it had poor connectivity and the replacement Max was the same. I need a working phone so I went to the X. I know it’s kind of silly to buy last year’s model but it is awesome. It “just works”! I couldn’t be happier.

My daughter has the XR and loves it. It’s a beautiful phone. However, after using the X, I really like the smaller size. I might trade for a new phone next year but then again maybe not. I had my prior 6S Plus for 3 years. It was one of my favorites and still worked perfectly with a new battery when I passed it on.

I know after the whole connectivity issue I had this year, I will not look to be a launch day customer.

I have and any lcd screen is and will always be inferior to oled

Feel as bad? What does this even mean?

The XS Max is too big for me, it feels like I have to use Reachability constantly or only use it two handed to use anything in the top portion of the screen. The screen is also too wide to be comfortable in my hands. The XR felt better to me and is less tall.

Not silly at all that you bought the X. Honestly, as I’m getting older now, I’m starting to want to keep my devices for longer instead of upgrading them every year like I used to. I have the X and I was thinking about it the other day that the XR would be sufficient for what I use my phone for. That being said, I hope Apple releases a XR2 next year because I’d be jumping on that model for sure instead.

They will. It wouldn’t make sense not to offer the XR again. Having the XS only is too expensive for most consumers, Apple knows that and they need to have an offering that is priced lower, but still enticing enough with the form factor and Face ID for consumers to want to upgrade.

XR is 828p.

If I'm reading this correctly, you find 720+p (or, let's say sub-1080p) acceptable on a 4.7" screen, but not 6.1". I'm curious: why? Can't be sharpness, because pixel density of the 8 is exactly the same as that of the XR (326ppi). Why do you find the resolution of the 8's smaller display preferable to that of the XR's larger display?
