You need the original Bold. Best BB ever made.

I don't know why they slimmed it down honestly. I have small fingers but loved the old Bold keyboard the times I played with it at the AT&T store. The Tour was a bit cramped in comparison.

BB's are great at messaging and notifications, so if you're into that rather than apps and wouldn't surf much even on the iPhone, then it's not a bad choice...esp in conjunction with an iPad. It's not for me though.

I had a 3g, got the blackberry itch and sold it for a 9700. Loved it for a month until I realized I never browsed the web on it, media was boring, I had to start using an ipod again etc.

Sold it, got a 3Gs and realized that I will probably never leave iPhone again.

...

And disapointed in iPhone 4? WHAT?! Its a HUGE leap. Did you watch the keynote all the way through?

- Beautiful design, glass front and back.
- 5 mega pixel camera with awesome flash.
- Front facing camera/facetime
- Video camera that can record HD
- iMOVIE! Freakin iMovie.
- And a ton of other things.
- Crazy beautiful display

Well, I do agree on design. Camera is nice too, but frankly speaking 3.2M camera with flash on most Blackberries for me is pretty sufficient, and that's not a deal breaker. Video camera? May be. Some. Again, comparing that Blackberry gives Video Camera for ages too, it's not too important (for me).
While front-facing camera is technically nice feature to have, I can barely think WHEN and WHY would I use it. Not it's pretty useless for me.
Now, I love that they improved battery life. I was getting less than a day from 3GS, so if they at least stretched it out to a day, it's something.
But that's about it. They didn't fix the Home screen. Still no way to see (easily) your today's agenda from calendar, still no way to see if you have new emails. Beejive with PUSH on iPhone works really bad, too many disconnects, have no idea why, but Beejive on Blackberry is reliable and stable as rock.

I am doing a lot of emails, and sometimes it just need to be fast to check/email. With Blackberry I can see I have new email from the LED light, I can click literally 1 button and be the inbox. With iPhone it takes me 1 click on home button, swipe to unlock, tap on Mail. Just to get to the inbox. Calendar is even worse. And battery life is amazing, my friend is getting at least 2-3 days on one charge.
I do understand issues with browser (meh, default browser shouldn't be called "browser" at all ;-) -- but there is Mini Opera 5 and Bolt browsers, which do 100 on Acid3 tests, and pretty usable.
I am not doing many apps, and those apps which I have -- they do exist on Blackberry.

As for the media - I am using phone also for gym, so it's music. Works fine on iPhone, and Blackberry.

That what got me concerned. May be got bored with iPhone, which is definitely great and amazing device, but you know, they are adding a lot of new features, bells and whistles, while like some underlaying software issues and not getting solved...

I can't even put the two in comparison. Two totally different devices aimed at two totally different crowds. I enjoy entertainment and media, so I'll be getting the 4 for sur.

I used a 9700 for a little over a month. I used (and wasted) my ATT phone upgrade eligibility to get that phone on the cheap. That decision ranks pretty high on the idiot-o-meter because now I want the iPhone4 and will likely pay full price for it. (Granted it shouldn't change my contract.) I wasn't able to return the 9700 so it's laying about boxed somewhere.

Relative to other Blackberries it was a great experience and it was very convenient for my work-related things. But relative to the iPhone it just felt inferior and out-of-place. I have a bunch of Mac equipment (like many of us here) that all play along nicely with each other. Throw a BlackBerry into the mix and all the Macs are like "WTF is this thing doing here??" :D BlackBerry Desktop Manager (on Mac of course) felt goofy and unpolished. Just my 0.02$ though.

I won a free BB 9700 and I tried it out for 1 DAY! I'm too used to having a capacitive touchscreen. I even won a free HTC Touch Pro 2. Even though it's touchscreen, it's resistive! LOL :p

Sounds like somebody didnt watch the keynote all the way through : p
Anyways, mega pixels dosen't equal quiality. And even if it did, the iPhone 4 would still win. The photos taken on the iPhone 4 are STUNNING. Aboslutely beatiful.

And you say "Video Camera? Big deal..." like I was saying the video camera was a big selling point. We know other phones have had them for years now. The 3Gs had one too. The point is that it records HD video and can be edited in iMovie on your phone. Thats a big deal. Did you see the movie that was shot and edited on the iPhone 4 in the keynote? Pretty big deal.

Anyways, like somebody said, the Bold isnt even in the same class as the 3Gs. And this is coming from somebody who thinks BB's are really good devices.

I guess you'll just have to do like me and take the BB plunge to realize why you want to come back : ) And if you are happy and don't come back, thats just as good.

Find the device that suits your needs.

The reason why I ask is that the the iPhone 4 is an evolutionary update to the 3Gs, not a huge revolutionary step up (unless you think the gyro is :p ) My point is if you're unhappy with the 3Gs you will likewise be unhappy with the 4.

You're joking, right?

Completely new design, completely new materials, completely new CPU, new battery, new camera, new screen, led flash... and you don't consider that a huge step up?

BTW, of course it's an evolutionary release, it's a descendant of the original iPhone (common ancestor :p). But it's also revolutionary because it brings completely new things to the table (mutations ), unlike the 3G/s, which was housed in the same case as the 3G, and even shared the same screen, same battery, and same wi-fi chipset (the 2% difference ;) ).

I can't believe this is a thread.

vs. the 9700!?

And he's posting how he's disappointed with the iPhone on a mac forum.

What am I missing?

HTC evo out specs iphone... no wonder jobs is pissed

Hello,

Wonder, was anybody disappointed with iPhone 4? I loved the design and stuff.. but everything else -- the software, etc. -- was not changed too much. Love the "combined inbox" and multiple Exchange accounts but that's it. Still no additional info on home screen, etc.

I am seriously considering getting Blackberry Bold 9700 instead of iPhone 4. It's cheaper, it does email good, works with it really fast.

I'm ecstatic w/ the iP4 b/c of the improved photo and video. But if I were to switch platforms it def. would not be to the Bold. That is the anti-iPhone. It's clunky, no touch screen, non-intuitive and mediocre battery life. At least the Droid phones try to copy the iPhone, and you know the saying, is the imitation is sincerest form of flattery.

Keep in mind this is only for a limited time, and also Sprint says it will soon throttle the speed of customers that use too much data.

What I find amusing is that it's biggest improvements are a screen no one really complained about before and some really awful multitasking. Apple and it's fanboys are big on the whole "Apple only does something when they can do it the best." garbage, so please explain to me this woefully pathetic multitasking they're going with that can't hold a candle to the competition.

I had a BB for less than a year, I hated it almost from day one.

The phone was riddled with problems making almost unusable. The only thing that I missed at first was the BBM but who cares about that when the iphone has so many other features.

hate to let facts ruin a great story
"via Engadget's article:

"Update: We're hearing from a couple sources that the shot here from The Playbook is a little out of context, and actually refers to a new feature for businesses looking to restrict disproportionately high usage by employees with company data cards. That sounds a little less painful, does it not? Thanks, everyone!"

Comparing a BlackBerry to an iPhone is a waste of time. They are two distinctly different devices, designed for completely different purposes.

The BlackBerry was originally designed as a mobile device for email. The first ever. Early models did not include a phone, for the same reason an iPad doesn't. They weren't designed to be a phone. During the first few years they built their reputation by delivering a fast, reliable, mobile email solution. Then as time went by and cellular phones evolved, so did the Blackberry. They added a phone, and then a browser. There was no such thing as a "smartphone" then. Years later as smartphones became a force, Apple decided to enter the arena.

From day one, the iPhone was designed as a handheld computer & entertainment device. Building on Apples experience as a computer company that created the iPod, they were in the position to do things that RIM could not do. Fast forward to the present, take a good look at the two of them and you will see why comparing the two is pointless. The _real question_ is what are your needs? What are you going to use it for? In that context they are both winners. I know, I own & use both.

only thing that a blackberry can do that an iphone can't is BBM

but now that whatsapp talks to bb's too this is a thing of the past

Like mentioned abover they're essentially two different platforms. I understand the hate is high because this is a pro-Apple forum but the BB 9700 is a really good phone.

I think you should definitely get a Blackberry rather than an iPhone, and I am sure that you will be very happy with it indeed.

I don't think Blackberry approves of any time wasting activities and positively bucks at playing games, music, videos, most apps of any kind. It's kind of like having your superego in your pocket at all times. If you positively must be entertained at any time during the day, bring along a magazine.

this is true...blackberries are email based while iphones are computer and entertainment based

I sold my 3GS for a Bold 9700 and I love the BB. BB is much better for text and phone and notifications but poor for web and syncing non enterprise email. The latest 2 way sync for gmail takes between 1 and 6 hours to sync deleted mail. And that's what it's supposed to do - incredibly. The screen on the Bold is better than the 3GS.

The 3GS reception and battery life is also poor beside the Bold.

If you want a device for phone and text go BB. If you want a true do it all smartphone that everyone else has, go iPhone - assuming iPhone 4 fixes the reception and battery shortcomings.
