It took me 3 tries to get my old iPhone 4 unlocked:

Try 1: called in, gave them old account info and IMEI for old phone. 5 days later I got an email stating I wasn't eligible due to no existing IMEI. I had done a swap of my original at the Genius bar right after purchase due to a faulty microphone. I guess AT&T still had my old IMEI on file. So I called back in, explained it, they re-requested the unlock.

Try 2: Got an email denying the unlock due to an "unpaid balance.". I dig up all my old invoices as proof that there was no unpaid balance, etc. I called in again, submitted proof that old account was never delinquent, etc. The rep confirms that account was closed and was fine and they put in a third request for unlock.

Try 3: 10 days after try 2, I FINALLY get the unlock email. IPhone 4 now unlocked.

Moral of story: AT&T is effed up. Keep trying and you'll eventually prevail.

I haven't read through this entire thread so familiar with all the problems everyone is having but figured I'd share my experience from this week.

I decided to upgrade to a 4s from my existing 4 this week (and yes, I know another new iPhone is likely around the corner), was going to let my daughter use the 4 as an iPod rather than buy her a new one. I instead by chance found a buyer for the 4 and the price was too good to pass up. He asked if I could have AT&T unlock it before shipping it off to him so I called up requesting my old iPhone 4 be unlocked. Now I was eligible for an upgrade but my 2 year contract technically isn't up until later next month and I had just activated my new 4s a couple hours earlier. The AT&T rep took my IMEI, put me on hold a few minutes, came back, said he was going to send me an email with the steps to take to complete the unlock via iTunes. I inquired that I thought it usually took 48-72 hours for Apple to unlock it--he explained that used to be the procedure but that they now had the ability to take care of it themselves.

I immediately restored via iTunes and was greeting with the message that my iPhone was now unlocked.

Based on the few stories I've read in this thread, it sounds like I got lucky with the rep handling my call.

So, since I have tmobile and I have an iPhone 4, am I able to email them and have them unlock it? Or do I need to give them my account number? Which I don't have since I don't have AT&T? Could I get one of my friends account numbers?

what iOS are you on? you didn't even activate your iphone yet. maybe it's not even on AT&T to begin with

I have emailed a lot, even called (hard thing cuz im in mexico) and nothing.
Emails told me alot of things, that im not elegible, security restrictions, account number, etc. When i called, the rep told me that he was unable to request the unlock because i dont have account, called again and this time i provided the att phone number of the iphone, the rep asked for secure social number which i dont have, so he was unable to help me neither.

So my iphone its still locked and im loosing faith lol.

Any advice?

Purchased my boss's old iPhone 4 a while back when she upgraded to a 4S. Last week, I logged into her AT&T account and chatted with tech support to get it unlocked. One week later, got the confirmation unlock email so I backed up and restored. Didn't get the congratulations unlock popup so I wasn't sure if it worked but popped in my friends T-Mobile sim and she's good to go. $125 well spent. :)

That's a good price for an i4.

not sure if this will work but, for those in the US that bought the iphone from ebay or craigslist, wouldn't it be easier just to ask a friend with an at&t account to do an IMEI swap on at&t's system??? it may solve that 'imei not associated with the account' issue some people have. I know that at&t systems don't update the IMEI on the new handset if only the sim card was swapped between devices. Only time that happens is if an upgrade was going to happen or replacing it due to the handset be messed up.

if you have it jailbroken simply add SAM from repo.bingner.com in cydia and activate. it will at least give you proper push notifications and facetime
No I can't do that because SAM cannot activate an hacktivated phone. It gives me "Stockification Failure".
And if I jailbreak it and then install SAM, and then click on Redsn0w option to deacticvate the iPhone, it will go back to the ios 5.1.1 activation screen, even is it is jailbreaked, so...it's a vicious circle.. :)

Purchased my iPhone 4S on 5/12/2012 from a Corp AT&T store. Last Monday, I got onto the AT&T online chat as asked for it to be unlocked. The lady I spoke with said she would put in a request but could not promise anything.

Woke up on the 19th with an email from AT&T approving my unlock request. I'm pretty happy! I am a new AT&T customer FWIW.

they say they cant do it until my contract ends this summer, is this correct?

Yes, that's their rules.
If you're on contract with another phone then that i4 can be unlocked.
But try calling a few more times, some reps are not as strict to the rules.

Mine is unlocked. I am still on contract too. Unlocked via merely asking ATT. This was a replacement iphone FWIW and not the original as I had hardware issues(home button)

Question though....Do I need to restore the iphone before being able to use other sims? Or can I already swap sims out?

It wont accept other carriers sim now.
You can either restore or deactivate your iphone using redsnow and then put your sim in and activate it with itunes.
Everything will still be on your phone, your phone will just get activated again and will then take any GSM carriers sim.

If I am an ATT customer under contract, can I purchase a used out of contract phone (from ebay or whatever) and unlock it, or do I have to be out of contract to do it?
