Depends if the phone you're purchasing is still under contract on someone elses account. If it is they might make you wait.

ok thanks. so it all has to do with the contract status of the phone in question, and not MY contract?

Can anyone please help me, haha i know this is annoying, but i have tried everything, i have emailed alot, called, even passed my imei to some guy who said he could help for some buck and no response.
Please can anyone help, im in Mexico and would like to use my "iphone" as an iphone, not as an ipod touch.

No I can't do that because SAM cannot activate an hacktivated phone. It gives me "Stockification Failure".
And if I jailbreak it and then install SAM, and then click on Redsn0w option to deacticvate the iPhone, it will go back to the ios 5.1.1 activation screen, even is it is jailbreaked, so...it's a vicious circle.. :)

hmmm that's very odd. that's exactly what SAM is for. To be a substitute for not having the original carriers card. Try it anyways and select the proper country bundle or just leave it at auto detect.

Man At&t sure is inconsistent, the first time I chatted with a rep to unlock my iphone 4s, all they did was asked for the imei, and email address, I waited 3 days, no email, check on imei.info and my 4s was unlock. Just today, I obtained a iphone 4, chatted with the first agent, asked for imei and she said the phone is security restricted, whatever that means. Chatted with the second agent, asked for imei and then said it's not an att phone...:confused::cool:. I told her it is an att phone, I put my sim in and made calls. She told me to call in.... So chatted with a 3rd agent, asked for my imei, and email, gave me the case number, said wait a few days, phone would be unlock. Just letting u know my experience with att unlocking...

Edit: Following up on my unlock this morning, I check on imei.info and my second one submitted this morning has been unlock, just now need to restore and activate.

great. did you use the sim that was originally attached with the iphone or did you use your other contract number?

I recently purchased an iPhone 4s with a 2 year contract on a new line of a family plan. The other lines of the family plan are not on a contract. Can I give the phone number of the line that is not on contract to unlock this new iPhone 4s?

I have iphone 4 AT&T locked purchased from ebay.
I'm overseas and cannot use it... The seller on ebay told me it's unlocked but apparently he lied... (I payed 500$!)
I'm stuck and frustrated, :(.
If anyone can call AT&T and help me unlock it, I will be very gratefull and willing to pay, though I cannot pay too much.
Please good people. do something good for me.
Please PM me.
All the best guys.

my 3gs is unlocked!

I just want to post my experience. I did mine over live chat on ATT.com- my phone has been out of contract for 6 months. I gave the imei, and my email address after they checked it was OK to unlock. Was told to look for my email in 5-7 days. Well, it was over the weekend, I had an email to verify my email since it was different from my itunes log in email, and the next day I got an email from ATT with a link that tells you how to unlock.

Basically, restore, and when it reboots, it's unlocked. All well and good, but I didn't want to lose my jailbreak for 5.0.1 that is untethered. A restore in itunes would put it to 5.1.1- no untethered jailbreak for it yet.:(

Did my research. The redsn0w trick did not work for me-I did not get the page with the 4 choices to only do deactivate. It went thru jailbreak sequence prep and would just die- I think cause my jailbreak was sn0wbreeze. So, I went into itunes, did the shift restore to select my sn0wbreeze custom restore file I used to jailbreak- it went thru it's thing- restored on 5.0.1, rebooted. After itunes verified the restore there was a message- congratulations- your iphone is unlocked! And my cydia was still there, on 5.0.1.:D

Bad thing was it was wiped. But that's OK- I only updated the OS yesterday- so no great loss. Very easy to do, even when you are not too sure. I figured the worst would be> on 5.1.1, unlocked, waiting for the new untethered jailbreak that is very close. But that did not happen. Use your custom restore with shift key/restore button works just fine. Works on t-mobile, consumer cellular (it did locked though too), and of course still works on ATT.

You cannot restore custom 5.0.1 ipsw if you dont have shsh blobs stiched to it, because Apple has stopped signing 5.0.1.

probably did have it since its restored to 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze.

I sent two imeis for my family's iPhones so hoping to get em done in a day or two. they have a dedicated "unlock group" now. they also sound intimidating like when you call and don't quote an at&t number. its like they deal with thousands of requests each day and everyone floats a story about buying off eBay and not having a receipt. if you are an existing or former customer of AT&t you can unlock your iphone easy. Not having the original number of the iphone doesnt matter either as long as its outta contract.

they will help you unlock if you avoid taking them on a trip thru fantasy island.

UPDATE:

Unlocked one iPhone 4 :)
thanks AT&T

I missed that window- before i used sn0wbreeze, I was on 4.1 on my 3gs, did a lot of research since I haven't used this iphone in a long time. I found a file for 5.0.1 that I could use with snowbreeze which converted it to a custom file I could use shift/restore in itunes. It worked. I did not have the shsh blobs saved in cydia for 5.0.1. I just had the custom restore file from sn0wbreeze. I am not extremely technical in understanding how all this works. I am just good at researching and finding tools to use to do what I want with the phone. Persistent I guess, cause I am always prepared to do the official restore in itunes if it messes up- which one time it did, updated my baseband and I lost my unlock a year ago.:(

For anyone who wants to keep their jailbreak, and unlock via itunes with official ATT permission, then what I did worked for me. A shift/restore with custom ipsw that includes your jailbreak should work. If it messes up and bumps you to 5.1.1, there will be a jailbreak coming out in a couple weeks that will be untethered. Presently, it is tethered for all phones. At least as of 3 days ago. Good luck!

Did they ask you to fax a receipt?

they don't if you are calling in on an account originally linked to the iPhone when sold at the counter. the ICCID at the back of the box usually is linked up and the system mentioned Non-commitment or ETF paid. Prior to policy change even contract phones were unlocked provided another contract existed in good standing.

In the UK you can unlock an iphone on O2 at anytime provided you see out the whole contract period and pay your dues. it's fruitful as no one wants to unlock their iPhone and not use the service they are albeit paying for.

Well guys, even though I never have been and probably never will be an AT&T customer, I managed to get my iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 unlocked by them. It takes a ton of calling to get the right reps to take your request, but it is totally worth it when you get your phones unlocked. Interestingly enough, I got pretty much the same email twice, and neither was the "Congratulations" email from AT&T. Instead, it was an extremely vague message saying only this:
Dear Customer:

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding your AT&T service. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. The issue has been resolved.

Should you have any further needs regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to call us at 1 800 331-0500 and reference the tracking number shown above.

Sincerely,
AT&T
The first time I got it, I thought it denied it or something. The second time, however, I called in to AT&T and checked the case number in the title. They then gave me the instructions to restore my phone to unlock it! However, since I was jailbroken, I simply installed SAM, deactivated my phone, and plugged it into my PC (you can also deactivate with redsn0w). I got the almost mythical iPhone unlock screen in iTunes twice and am now sitting happily with two unlocked phones.

Also, both were obtained second-hand with no way to contact the account holder.

Finaly i got my iphone UNLOCKED!! i paid like 30 dlls today in the morning to a guy here in mexico, and a couple of minutes ago he confirmed that the iphne was unlocked. Conected it to itunes and "Felicidades, tu iPhone ha sido desbloqueado" Great.

Tried via online chat today for fun (4S on contract) they said no. I saw some people said they got there's unlocked so figured it was worth a try

Didn't work for me either. I even used a line that was not under contract to unlock.

they don't do unlocking via chat as reported by many members. it's to stop the exploitation by people who merely unlock for friends or make a business out of it. good move I say because now you can actually talk to a rep without getting cut off due to the load on AT&T helplines.

iMHO if you call you will get results.

Well guys, even though I never have been and probably never will be an AT&T customer, I

The whole humanity race is with you, except "try-hard-core-always-bound-to-fail-AT&T-fanboys" lol

At least you got it done. Time to forget AT&T.

AT&T?

Fail.

try-hard-core-always-bound-to-fail-AT&T-fanboys?

Total Fail.
